Title: Railroad Kits Gleason Garage
Post by: MAP on February 13, 2014, 05:53:21 PM
I thought I'd post some pictures of the kit I'm currently working on.  It's Gleason Garage from Jimmy's Railroad Kits line.  This isn't going to be a build thread as such, but more of a tool to keep me focused on doing (hopefully) some kind of railroad related fun thing most nights.  Sort of like the 60 minute thingie, but I'm too scatter-brained to focus on doing something every night....even if I really like it.  So here are some photos of the build.  Comments are certainly welcome!

Thanks Robert.  Yeah, you've had your hands on 1 or 2 of these kits, with one planted on your layout!  Here are a few more photos.  The whole building is composed of a left, center & right section.  The center section is made from cardstock.  It has cutouts for each piece to fit into, and also for the bracing that is on the rear wall where they overlap.

Looks like you're off to a terrific start.  I like the finish on the walls.  I built one of these for JimmyD.  It was a fun little build and I really like the design of structure.  Very unique.  Carry on and keep up the great work.   :D

Thanks for following along Bob.  For the finish I use Doug F's sponge technique, using 3 different colors.  Hope to post some more pictures tonight.

Here's a couple of more progress shots.  Like Bob said, it's an interesting looking kit, based off a real station somewhere, I think, in NH.

I like the walls too, nice and worn. The blue is also great for the Sunoco station. In my younger days we would burn nothing but Sunoco 260 in our street rods.

Nice job so far. I really like the wall treatment. You clamp like a surgeon  ;)

Thanks for the comments guys.  Yep, I LOVE clamps.  I'll use 5-10 on a wall sometimes when gluing up the stripwood bracing.  I had to dig around to find a blue that was close to the Sunoco blue.  I'll be adding some yellow in somewhere, but not sure where yet.

Nice thread, MAP...following along as I have this in the stash. At the same time I picked up the three-stall garage from Walt at Rusty Stumps. Thought it might make a back-alley complement to Gleason's. Following along...

Thanks for following along folks.  Dave, I think the 3-car garage would be a good compliment to Gleasons.  I've done a little more work on the kit.  Finished putting the tar paper roof on the center section of the building using the 3M tape I got from Jimmy.  I love that stuff.  Also added in 2 smaller walls on the right section.  Here are a few photos.

Ok, here's a couple of pics.  One is showing the front of the building as far as I've gotten.  The other is the staircase going up to the 2nd floor on the left side of the building.  Definitely a work in progress.

Hey John.  The build went on hold for a bit.  I was in Florida for the past week.  My mom sold her house, so I flew down last week and with the help of the realtor, my cousin and a couple of hired hands we packed the boxes she had put together the past couple of weeks in a U-Haul.  We left Friday morning and I got home this morning at ~yawn~ 1:30.  Where's my coffee?  As for the lighting, I really need to start doing that.  I saw that Slim has a starter kit with soldering stuff/lights/wires/etc., so maybe at the expo I'll be looking him up.

Okay, I wonder how many quotes of quotes we can get quotes of?

I think it really should be called a "nested" quote. But cascade is ok with me.

So Mark how is your build coming! I know a guy that can help you light it up with LED's.

Good sons have to put Mom first!

You should look Slim up at the EXPO or take a look at his web site.  I bought one of his starter sets a couple years ago and it was a great way to get into LED's.  Only bad part is I don't know what to do with all the light bulbs I've collected over the years.

I would also recommend Slim's clinic at the EXPO -

I was just looking at that Gleason Garage box sitting on the table in my garage/shop/hell-hole this morning when I was heading out the door. I'm really anxious to get started on it but I have some other projects that need tending to first. One is getting some info to Jimmy the D for doing a part for the light-up kit for "DePeaux" Station.

The Deeeeeluxe kit has pretty much everything you need to get started to solder up the tiny surface mount stuff. You want to be able to do that if you want to make your own goosenecky lights. The Deeeeeluxe a little light on white LEDs but I'll throw in some extras of those to forum pals.

Maybe a Tootsie Roll too.

So Mark how is your build coming! I know a guy that can help you light it up with LED's.

Just checking in.  Still no progress on the build (or my layout), but mom is settling in nicely. I will definitely look Slim up (and down 'cause he's kinda shifty looking) at the Expo for sure.  I've visited his website and was tempted to get the starter kit, but I want to talk to him first before jumping in.  I've heard he tosses tootsie rolls at you if you're mis-behaving in his clinic!  I'll have to mis-behave a lot!!

Isn't throwing Slim under the bus excessive cruelty to busses? :-\

I'm sure there is some group that watches out for busses and that we would be in big trouble throwing Slim under one!

Besides, how do we know which busses are endangered so that we don't throw Slim under those and get in even bigger dodo..... :'(

I like it too Karl. In fact, I ordered one today. I a;ways wanted to light that one up.

Okay, I wonder how many quotes of quotes we can get quotes of?

I think it really should be called a "nested" quote. But cascade is ok with me.

So Mark how is your build coming! I know a guy that can help you light it up with LED's.

Just checking in.  Still no progress on the build (or my layout), but mom is settling in nicely. I will definitely look Slim up (and down 'cause he's kinda shifty looking) at the Expo for sure.  I've visited his website and was tempted to get the starter kit, but I want to talk to him first before jumping in.  I've heard he tosses tootsie rolls at you if you're mis-behaving in his clinic!  I'll have to mis-behave a lot!!

By the way.....good build so far Mark, I'll be following along!

You're right Greg. I must've gotten dizzy after looking at all the quotes...It's getting to be like looking in the mirrors at the barber shop if you know what I mean.

Started what?

Ooops!  I hit the post before I said anything.  Ok, the "who", I believe, was Tom L. wondering how far this quote thing would go.  Slim, just close one eye and you'll be ok.

Mark I don't know how you did it but you have lost control of this build thread. I suggest progress pictures!

John, .....associations.....endangered busses......Slim's tootsie rolls....and my methodical (=very very very slow) building practices doomed me from the beginning of being out of control.  Since I haven't made any progress, maybe I'll post an overview shot of my workbench showing the 2 inches of dust on the kit and my tools/paints/glues.  That will motivate me to do some work on it this week.

If anyone is wondering why the forum slows down considerably, it has something to do with this thread and the bandwidth it uses up caching all those quotes.

I'm glad that Mega Ralph doesn't have a birthday thread here. Between this and that, the forum would have big problems!

Okay MAPpy, get back to work on the build. I'll light the kit up when you're done.

Mark I don't know how you did it but you have lost control of this build thread. I suggest progress pictures!

Geez...I leave for six months and nuthin's changed. You're all still nuts...

Randee, you expected a change?  BwaaaHaaaHaaa.....now who's the nutty one?

Hi MAP:
I really like this kit. I will be folloing along.
Karl
I like it too Karl. In fact, I ordered one today. I a;ways wanted to light that one up.

Have you informed ACL of your plans yet?

Hey, I guess I resemble that! Where are my matches?

Tom ;D

And all along, we all thought you HAD no match.

Okay, I wonder how many quotes of quotes we can get quotes of?

Now, not only do I have no match, I have no equal either!

Tom ;D
We could try  and out do that Happy Birthday Ralph thing on the other forum.

Quote cascade:  Go for it!  Oh, and thanks for the color choice comment.
Cascade?
Electricity?
Bet all you Great Northern fans are happy now!

Slims is always trying to push the electronics to the next level - does anyone know where the server is for this forum? Will there be smoke?  Who's thread is getting hijacked for this experiment?  Just asking?

Mine!  Do I smell wires burning?
I think it really should be called a "nested" quote. But cascade is ok with me.
Isn't this Greg's thread? I wonder if he'll get back to it before the originally quoted thing shrinks down the the size of one pixel.

So Mark how is your build coming! I know a guy that can help you light it up with LED's.

Just checking in.  Still no progress on the build (or my layout), but mom is settling in nicely. I will definitely look Slim up (and down 'cause he's kinda shifty looking) at the Expo for sure.  I've visited his website and was tempted to get the starter kit, but I want to talk to him first before jumping in.  I've heard he tosses tootsie rolls at you if you're mis-behaving in his clinic!  I'll have to mis-behave a lot!!

Hey, this isn't my thread Slim, it's Marks'.

By the way.....good build so far Mark, I'll be following along!

You're right Greg. I must've gotten dizzy after looking at all the quotes...It's getting to be like looking in the mirrors at the barber shop if you know what I mean.

Who started this anyway?

Thanks for all of the input!  It's been fun building this kit, even though I've been taking my sweet a** time.  The next photos show the staircases attached to the building.  I still need to do some weathering (especially the tarpaper roof), and the "C"-ment sidewalks need to be toned down a bit.

Thanks guys!  I really like the kit, and that it was designed from a prototype somewhere in the North East is a bonus.  Hopefully I can finish off the odds & ends that I need to do by this weekend 'cause I've got others that are calling out to me from the closet saying "build me next......no, build me next!!"

Howdy.  Here's the last update for this build.   I built the kit for my buddy George M.  Here's a picture of the garage on its new home on his layout.
