Much like some of my friends on the forum I have been far too busy at work and at home to find time to play with toy trains. I started FSM's Hazen Boyd a looooong time ago and I have been cleaning out the train room the last few days to get back at it.
This is my first FSM kit build!
Since there are so many build threads going with the challenge why not add another?!??!
I am terrible about documenting my progress so this will be a quick and dirty build thread in the style of the great Postal Karl.
I primed the castings with a rattle can of Camo Khaki and a flat black.
Then I added A&I to the walls and dry brushed the walls with white craft paint, added signs and details and then assembled the walls.
I added the roof, shingles and some more weathering.
The last photo shows the main structure glued down to the diorama base.
When I get a chance tonight I will add the latest and greatest photos.
It looks great Bobby. I'm glad you decided to join us. I well be following along.
Bobby
I love your backdrops! ;)
Hi Bobby:
I built the first kit. You are off to a good start. Looks great so far.
Karl
Looking good. I like your weathering on the building. I'll be following along.
Bobby,
Really great job. I love the weathering.
Tom ;D
Great kit!!! Super build!!!
Jaime
Nice work Bobby..... 8)
Bobby,
Looking very nice. I love the weathered white. This is my favorite finish for structures. Not sure if saw Karl's build and my build of the kit. Here are the links.

Frank
Frank, I had forgot how great & different the 2 different buildsthat you & Karl did.
If Iam not wrong your was done in the weathered white & Karls done in earth
The one thing I liked in both builds is the Tar Paper roofs
In Georges kit I believe it calls for Weathered black tar paper over the coal area. The black does not help bring out the building details.
Your green fits right in with the traditional white building
Karls had a red shade which looks good with the earth color structure
What shingles did karl use with his structure. They do not look like Campbell also like the Green color shingles
Bobby, Not to overpower your build. I do like your structure alot. Look at Karl/Frank build there is alot of color detail to work from

Yep!! Looking very good so far ;)
At the rate I work maybe I will have this done by this time next year! ;D ::)
I hope to get started again on this soon. Here are a few pics on where it is today...
Sometimes the hardest part about building these things is finding the time to do it.
Looking good.

Wow, you're really making some great progress on this. I have this kit, and am hoping to get to it in 2017.
Bobby,
Looking very nice!!!
Frank
Great job Bobby. I like how you are going right after it.
Bobby,
I agree with all the others, wonderful job on the build. The weathering really looks natural.
Tom ;D

Love this kit. Thanks for sharing your work!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Bobby I just have to agree with everyone.....First Rate!
Thanks for the comments folks!
I have made a little more progress. I finished the small weigh station structure and placed it on the diorama base. I didn't use my cool backdrop this time around. ;D
Bobby,
Great job on this build.
The weathering looks very real and lifelike.
Jim
Bobby
The build looks great and the weathering is fantastic.
Fantastic build Bobby. :) Very nicely done.
Stay cool and run steam....... 8) 8)
Hi Bobby:
Built it when it came out. It's a great kit. You've done a great job with it so far. Keep the photos coming.
Karl
Bobby,
Coming out great. Can't wait to see the completed diorama.
Frank
Jim, Karl, Bob, Jim & Frank:
Thanks for the kind words!
This is a wonderful build so far Bobby! I really like it. Everything is aged/weathered to perfection and blends together quite well. Thanks for sharing!
Bobby
I just caught up with your thread. The build is coming out great. What everyone else said plus!
Thanks Bob & John,
Mighty high praise coming from you two!
I made a little more progress, added the scale house to the dio and the ladder to the upper platform. In the process of adding ground covering around the scale house I broke the railing off of the stairs leading up to the lower platform. I actually had the same issue with the upper platform. No biggie, I'll fix it later. ::)
I am currently working on the coal shed, so far the coal shed has been the most challenging part of the build. That and trying to not break railings on the upper and lower platforms.
I have learned a few things so far on this build:
1. The lighting in my toy train room is terrible for photos.
2. I am not a good photographer.
3. FSM kits are fun to build.
4. FSM kits are not as intimidating as they seem to be!
:D ;D :P ::)
Very nice finishes! Looks great 8)
John
Hi Bobby:
Excellent work. The finishes on your structures are very well done. Especially the white.
Karl
John & Karl,
Thanks for the comments!
The coal shed is just about finished. I just need to add the rafter tails...
Bobby,
Dude! your build is totally awesome! Man, you completely rock the wood and weathering. lol. You go girl!!! Hey I don't care what Karl or John say about you when your off finger painting or sniffing glue. You R O C K ! Thanks for the pictorial update. Keep up the good work with the Popsicle sticks. Thanx Thom...
Bobby, smooth work. It all blends together well and nothing stands out. Keep the momentum.
Hey Bobby,
Nice work on the Coal Shed. You nailed that roof with just the right amount of weather.
Thanks for sharing!
Alan
Bobby
The build looks great. I agree you nailed the roof. It looks like an "in service roof " , not one that needs to be replaced. Very nicely done.
Bobby...Very nicely Done
Loren...
The coal shed looks great.
Tom ;D
Hi Bobby:
Looks just beautiful. Love you wall colors on thew main building. Can't wait to see it finished.

Marty, Alan, Tom, Karl, John, Loren:
Thanks for the great comments!
I have the next few days off for Turkey Day so I hope get a lot done on this if "The Boss" doesn't have other plans for me.
Your build is really coming along great. I also like the way your white paint came out. Thanks for the photos!
Bobby
Looking good awesome build.
I haven't had any updates in a while but I have been slowly putzing away at this. This is the storage shed, I painted the walls with a flat black craft paint and dry brushed them with white craft paint and chalks. I put together a wood scrap pile but I need to bet a better pic of it inside the structure....
Hi Bobby!
Great work! Nice weathering! I've built several FSM kits over the years. They're great models!
Ray
Hi Bobby:
Looks just beautiful. Can't wait to see finished product.
Karl
Bobby, you really nailed the tar paper walls
Bobby,
Looking great.
Frank
Karl, Andy, Ray & Frank:
Thanks for following along.
I started adding scenery to the diorama and since we finally had a nice sunny day yesterday I figured I'd take some pics outside....
Really nice work! The weathering is great, love the way the doors came out.
Great, weathering , colors, it all looks great.
Great job Bobby. Looks great.
Bobby,
Ditto to the comments, really nicely done.
Tom ;D
Bobby,
Great looking diorama. Looking forward to seeing it completed with the rest of the scenery and details.
Frank
Hi Bobby:
Ditto on what frank said.
Karl
Bobby
It looks great! And a sunny day - Wow - haven't seen one of those in awhile.
Bob, Jan, Steve, Tom, Frank, Karl & John: I belatedly thank you for the comments!
I work at a snails pace but I have been chipping away at this and I think I am just about finished. The good thing about taking pictures of one's models is that it gives you an opportunity to view the work from a different perspective. I can see a few things that I need to tidy up but I think I can officially say that I broke through the yellow box barrier... I finally built an FSM kit!
Comments, suggestions or tweaks are more than welcome...
Great work Bobby, one thing that I really like is the painting and weathering of the cast details, those barrels have been done so well.
Really nice build Bobby.
Really nice modeling work, Bobby! Everything looks great- the coloring, weathering, and details are all outstanding. I can be a bit slow in my modeling also, but mostly because I take my time to make sure everything meets the high standards that I place on myself in my modeling. It looks to me like your time was well spent because that is a really fine diorama that you have built!
Beautiful kit. Good finishes and colors.
John
I agree with the others, very well done. The pictures of the finished diorama really set the scene.
Tom ;D
Great job Bobby! Anyone would be proud to have that build on their layout. Your first FSM build is excellent. Two thumbs up! ;D ;D ;D
Wonderful diorama. The colors/finishes are excellent. Now just don't be like me and wait 20 years to build your next FSM kit.
Jeff
Great finish Bobby..... 8)
Hi Bobby:
Very nicely done in my opinion. Great colors and weathering. the scenery is great also. Keep up the good work. As Reading Bob Said anyone one be proud to have this structure on their layout. ;D ;D ;D
Karl :
Bobby,
What can I say that hasn't been said before by all the other great modelers comments. I do have one word I can use that would cover the proper description of the work you did on this first build you completed.
After some thought (just like you did on this build) I can only use one word which is left in the English language that hasn't been used by all the other great comments listed on this very cool build. Which BTW you did an excellent job on the documentation of each step by step process of painting, wood cutting, subassemblies, weathering, detailing, foliage, picture angles, I could just go on and on because you set a high bar for the rest of us little modelers.
But all that is neither here nor there! I have to use one word that simply covers and describes and reflects the work you showed us that you are more than capable of doing for great inspiration! Oh yeah, the word is the biggest word in the world.
I think your build is: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Thanx Thom...
Bobby
This is a great looking build. I agree with you that photographing a model really helps with the finishing touches. It's like looking at it through a magnifying glass. Again, it looks great. So now, what are you going to build next?
Excellent build!!!! ;D ;D ;D
Frank
Bobby, I could only find one thing wrong with build ... its not on my layout.
I looked at some of the pics at work and thought I would try the HDR feature on my iPhone to see if that makes a difference. Anyhow, to quote Jaime... "we love pictures" so.... here ya go!
Hi Bobby:
I think these look just great. As I said before you did a beautiful job with the kit.
Karl
Bobby,
Absolutely awesome modeling. Not only are the structures first rate, scenery is great, too. Love the touch of color from the flowers.

Thanks Jan... I sort of adopted the Sierra West Scale Models (aka Brett Gallant) method to the castings.

Thanks Jeff! Actually, I was looking at some of the smaller FSM kits I have stashed since I feel like I should take on something smaller next... like the FSM water tanks. You never know. ;D

Bobby- I finished going over this build thread and it is a wonderful piece of modeling. The weathering is superb! And you owe it to yourself to try something in O scale. The SWSM shacks, the FOS grocery store or gas station, or one of Stoney Creek Designs new commercial buildings would be good choices.
