Title: Build Challenge 2016 Yankee Girl Mine in HO
Post by: darrylhuffman on September 24, 2016, 07:26:40 PM
I failed to take step by step photos but I thought I would share my progress on my HO scale Yankee Girl Mine.  This is not an accurate scale model but simply something I am building for a new HOn30 layout.

Board by board.  The odd looking corrugated siding on the roof is from a problem that comes from photographing Paper Creek Models roofing paper.  I think the phrase is it creates a Morie pattern.

Darryl,

Welcome to the build challenge. Beautiful job on the board by board scratch build of the mine.

Great looking model.  You can never beat board on board construction.  The reflection coming off the roofing paper is interesting.  Have you tried changing the lighting source and/or using a polarized filter.

Thanks for sharing your work with us.  I look forward to you future posts.

Excellent build Darryl.  Thanks for posting your build.  Any details you can share on how you finished the board on boards?

John, I sold my SLR Nikon FtN a couple of years ago and only use my Apple iPhone for photos.

So I have no filters.

When I take more photos I will use natural sunshine in case my living room lighting is the problem.

I still have my Cannon 50D but take most of my pictures with my iPhone.  I can tell you that I have had real strange things happen when the iPhone camera is used with florescent lighting. When I was photographing George Sellios' layout and mistakenly took a picture of the florescent lights and had Morie fringe patterns in the photographs for a few shots after that.  I will be sorting pictures this evening and if I come across one I will send it to you or post it here. It looks like dark zebra strip shadows across the lighter areas of the photograph. I have experience with using Morie fringe patterns to inspect surfaces of automobile bodies so they do have useful purposes.  ;)

Mark, I stained the boards with black leather dye and alcohol before assembly.

After the walls were done I used a VERY dilute mix of Testors Thinner and Testors Flat Rust.

This is the standard color I use for most of the mines I have built.

This photo is of one a built a few years ago in HO scale.
