I originally designed this basic mushroom design in 1992 for Sherman Hill (mushroom design was unheard back then) for the house that I wanted to start building then. Went trough a divorce and was finally able to start building in '98. Took me a year and a half to build the house, doing almost everything by myself. Was sooo burnt out, that I didn't get started on the layout till the winter of 2003.
Once the house was built and I was thinking about the new layout, I was always trying to think of a way to add some more interest to the hill till one day I remembered a UP calendar I had seen with Williams loop on it. Out of curiosity I started looking at the canyon area and fell in love with it.
On this layout, I'm just trying to capture the feeling of the "Canyon" and not 100% prototypically correct. But there are 3 signature spots that will be very close to correct, "Keddie Wye", "Williams Loop" and "Clio Trestle". I'm also building in a lot of switching opportunity's in and around Oroville and Portola that isn't following the prototype.
I'm modeling 1955 and in my world, the UP had just merged with the WP, SP and DRGW.
Layout room measures 26'8" by 51'8", with 9 foot walls,
Layout height 53"
Wants incorporated into the layout
Minimum of 24" radius and #10 or larger turnouts on the main.
Track: Micro Engineering code 55 with some code 40 on a logging line east of Oroville
Staging yard that will hold 10, 100 car trains.
Minimum passing siding length 60 cars
Oroville and Portola yards
Minimum of 4 inbound/outbound tracks
Minimum of 7 classification tracks
Diesel and steam shops
Minimum of a 40 car icing dock in Portola.
Operations;
contentious loop
point to point
loop to loop
Staging to staging
or any variation of the above
I didn't have a track plan when I started the layout, but I did do some sketches of the benchwork to see if it would all fit together. I did although have a basic plan in my mind. After a few requests, I finally drew one up when I had track laid up to Keddie. The track plan is a picture of the drawn plan and it's not very clear. I'll try to get a better one up sometime. Staging not shown in the plan but it is at the top of the helix.

Rodney,
This is a big project and the track plan looks very interesting. Including the "big three" locations in the Feather River Canyon will be wonderful.
Where are you on the layout build at this time?

Thanks, Tom and yes it is a huge undertaking.
Right now, all the mainline in and operational, Oroville yard is almost done. Scenery has been started around the wye and west Oroville.
I'm using CVP's "Easy DCC" for control of the trains with wireless and tethered throttles.

When I started building the layout, the basement wall and floor was bare concrete with bare floor joists above. I started with installing all the raised floor areas, then I started hanging sheetrock on the ceiling on the Orovile-Portola end of the basement.
The Helix was first part of the rr to be built, as it has all the connections with all the other parts of the rr. It has nine and a half turns and raises from 53" off the floor to 90" off the floor. Outside it measures 60" X 83" with 28" and 26 1/2" radius curves. The grade on the outside track is just a hair under 2% grade. There will be a control panel inside of it for the Staging yardmaster.

Staging Yard
It is a "L" shaped with each leg about 16' long. The curves on the loops are about 30" radius and in the corner has a 36" minimum radius. It has 10 tracks that each will hold a 100 car train for staging.
The helix will hold at least 6, 60 cars train for staging also. With all this staging, I can comfortably stage 16 trains with no problems.
The complex track area that is just under the HVAC was built first on the floor and then raised into position.

The two tracks to the left is coming off the helix and the other is a return loop connection for continuous running in the staging area. In the above photo, the track in the lower left is this same connection. This connection will probably come back out as I now see no need for it.

Impressive undertaking. I know Jan is happy to see some more N scale here since I abandoned him. ACL Tom, it appears this layout has an "Ovalix" too.
Really nice work. Glad to see you sharing it here.

Thanks John.
I've started reading Tom's thread, but it'll take me awhile to read through the whole thing.
Ironically, the area Jan is modeling is about 70 miles from me.
Oroville Yard
6 arrival/departure tracks
9 classification tracks
I'm in the process of redoing this area of the classification throat and lead.

Beautiful layout Rodney. Have fun building it. :)

Very impressive layout. Hope to see more of it soon
Jim
Rodney,
WOWSER and then some. I'm very impressed with the project. I know just how much of your self you've invested in the layout to this point.
I have a helix on the Atlantic and Southern RR but as it is oval in shape I call it an Ovalix. Mine is 1% incline.
Great stuff Rodney.

Jeff,
I've really never timed a train doing the whole helix. I'm guessing maybe 7 to 10 minutes.
Bob, Jim and Tom
Thanks
Hi Jeff:
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! That's quite the layout especially in N-scale. Can't Wait to see some scenery.

Here is some more of the yard. Please note that the layout lighting has been changed to all LED's now. In the beginning, I tried a lot of different things for the lighting. Before the LED's, I like the C9, 40 watt incandescent with the spotlights used for outdoor lighting.

Such an impressive layout Rodney, thanks for sharing here as well as on N-scale.net
I love this thread, it just gets better and better. That's more better for those in the Sunshine State.

I think WOW has been used but I will say it again - WOW. That's a lot of track work. I will be watching your progress. Thanks for sharing your layout with us.
R~,
Man! your layout is stupid-sick! What a awesome mammoth undertaking. You are the man! Very nice indeed! God bless you for modeling in n-scale. If I was 16 and starting out in this hobby I'd do the little man's modeling for sure. I'll have to show you one of my upcoming n-scale projects I'm working on once complete. An 2-8-4 Berkshire Dcc sound with lights and lots of detail. keep up the great work, and don't forget the pictures, I hear several modelers here just love lots of pictures. ha. Thanx Thom...
Rodney super looking layout.
Thanks so much for the comments. I really appreciate them a lot.

The tracks on the left are the staging tracks for the High line. The mainline and turnout will be in a tunnel and the yard will also be hidden.
It'll hold 3, 35 car trains

We are getting close to "Keddie Wye"
Within the first year and half of start of building the rr, I had all the mainline track laid up to here and when we ran trains, we used the high line side for the reverse loop. With the loop at the bottom of the helix, we could run loop to loop.

The bridges are ME with the parts of a HO bridge bashed into the one on the right.
The track to the left goes up to Bieber (Ca) and is called the "high line". I'll go into a tunnel to the hidden staging yard for the high line.

The tie strips were printed on one of my 3D printers. On the long ties, I've glued PC Board ties and then soldered the code 40 (guard rail) and code 55 rails to that. Then added the walkways. I still need to do the high line side yet.

This is one of the 5, 3D printer that I have. This one is capable of printing a 12 inch cube. Since 2012, I've built over 25 3D printers from scratch. The first 19 were 8 inch cube and the last 7 have been the 12 inch ones. I machined all the plate parts on my Bridgeport mill, and the lead screws on one of my lathes. The rail is what is called "makerslide" and the "V" wheels are made of Delrin.
I'm printing one of the bases for one of the roundhouses that was going to be used on the layout.

Rodney,
This is just wonderful. The Feather River Canyon scene is awesome. And in N scale no less. Fantastic stuff.

I'm impressed too. The 24" minimum radius will look good with the big steam and diesel lashups and you're leaving plenty of room for scenery.

One of the reasons I've stayed with n scale, is the scenery to track ratio that is possible.

The big steam do look awesome going through the curves and the passenger trains really look at home as well.

OK I have a question for those of you that are reading this.
Do you like each post to have a lot of photos or would rather see just 1 or 2 photos per post???
I know that the longer posts makes each pager longer and just wanted to get some opinions on what make it best for you.
Either way for me Rodney, I just like looking!

I think your doing a great job with the thread. I like having 2-4 pictures per post because of the way the pages end up being formatted. It's your thread and your layout looks wonderful.
Rodney,
When I add to my thread I usually only show two pictures, three at the most. I got in the habit of doing this several years ago. On the old forum we could show 6+ pictures with each post. Many times the server would "glitch" and I'd lose the photos and narrative I was typing. This caused me to have to start over on that particular post.
So now, I only do a little narrative and a couple of photos out of habit.
As all the others have written, your thread and your choice. My two cents worth.
Tom ;D
Either way works for me .
Thanks for all the input.

I put Quincy Junction at the east end if the Keddie yard, but on the prototype, it was a few miles east of Keddie.
Quincy RR is the line on the right. It was originally just going to have a return loop below Williams Loop but I figured out a way to add the town of Quincy above where my work desk is.
All the prints will go into the lounge room when I get the walls done in there.
