Hi guys:
Have a new project. Have to build 8 Bar Mills N-Scale kits for Artie at Bar Mills. He needs new kits for a show diorama and I got the job.
Will be starting this week end,
Karl
Karl,
Wow, major score on your part. I'm sure you'll have them all finished in less than 10 days of so! You know speed!
Any way, I'll be following along as usual.
Tom ;D
Nice catch Karl. Get your opti-visor out and the lens clean. :)
I built the Majestic Hardware, Swanson's Lunch, and Saulena's kits almost 10 years ago, for my Ntrak modules I built at that time. Fun kits, for sure.
Will follow along, love your work.
Jim F
This will be nice to see what you do with Normal scale , I've built a few of these.

I will be watching the AB-Normal work you will be doing on these AB-Normal scale builds. ;D ;D ;D ;D
Jim
I had nearly all of those when I was in N scale. Bar Mills is a major force for N scalers craving craftsman kits. Looking forward to watching.
John
Hi Tom, Jim F, Jan, Jim M and John:
Hi guys thanks for checking in. glad to have you aboard. Will be starting one this afternoon.
Karl
You're just the man for the job Karl! I build a few of those for John C back when he was in N Scale. They're a lot of fun. You know I'll be following along. ;)
I'll be watching Karl.....don't let those "N" scale kits make you go blind. ;D ;D ;D
Hi Bob & Greg:
Started Swanson's Lunch yesterday. I will take a progress photo today. Thanks for watching.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Decided to start with Swanson's Lunch Stand. Walls are assemble and added to the base. Need to do some touch up here and there. It is painted with the paint in the picture. Wanted to try this stuff with chalky finish. It dries nice and flat.
Here's a few photos.
Karl
very interesting. You like the paint? I was thinking spraying a flat color and then sponge or dry brushing the "painted" color might yield a nice aged effect.
John
I've built all those kits for my N scale layout. :) 8)
Stay cool and run steam..... 8) 8)
Hi John:
I like the white. they make a couple of grays and some other colors. I want to dry a darker color to see if it dries chalky. I don't think it will as the white didn't. We shall see at some later date.
Karl
Hi Bob:
Then you can let me know how I'm doing.
Karl
This will be an interesting build for me. I'm thinking about a forced perspective N scale town for one of my mountain scenes. I will be following along.
Hi John:
That sound like a good idea. Glad your following along.
Karl

Hi Bob (PSG)
Here's a few progress photos. Hope I'm doing OK with this. Its so small.
Karl
Hi guys:
Structure is finished. On to casting & other details.
Karl
Looks very good Karl.
Jim
Nice work Karl. :) 8) Swanson's Lunch Stand needs a dose of mild-medium weathering with the Bragdon Weathering System. ;)
Stay cool and run steam....... 8) 8)
As usual, excellent work Karl. The Swanson's Lunch looks just the place for a bite :)
I sort of disagree, with the weathering. I think a proprietor would keep it as clean as possible :)
Be safe, all.
Jim F
Hi Guys:
I finished this one this afternoon. I straightened the trash cans.
Karl
Hi Guys:
The Shack Pack is next.
Karl
Hi8 gys:
Here's Shack #1.
Karl
Looking good Karl. :) 8)
Stay cool and run steam............ 8) 8)
Hi Bob:
Thank much appreciated.
Karl
Hi Guys:
2 shacks are done. Here's a photo.
Karl
Karl,
Great job on the kits! They look wonderful.
Tom ;D
Karl
The kits look great! How are your eyes doing?
They say you're in N-scale now

Did you think that over first
Hi Tom:
Thanks appreciate it.
Karl
Hi John & Jan:
Thanks much appreciate it.
Karl
Looking really good Karl. Keep the progress photos coming.
Hi Mark:
Thanks. I hope to finish the 3rd shack today and then on to another kit.
Karl
Very cool Karl. Can you post a photo with a coin for scale? They look super small.
Hi Steve:
The shack pack is Finished. Yes I will do that. Thanks for the compliment. I had to tear all the batons off of shack #1 as I forgot to put the paper overlays on the walls. It is done now.
Karl
Hi Steve:
Here's a photo with a coin in it.
Karl
Great job Karl , did you like your endeavors in N-scale?
Hi Jan:
Thanks for the compliment. I'm getting used to it slowly.
Karl.
Hi All:
Earl's Oil Co is next.
Karl
The shacks look great Karl. :) 8)
Stay cool and run steam............ 8) 8)
Good work on the shacks Karl..... 8)
It really takes a lot of these smaller structures to make a layout look natural.....these really fit the bill. :)
Hi Gregory & Bob:
thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
Some progress on Earl's Oil. Took a different approach. Glued my walls together prior to painting. This should prevent the warping I had in the previous two kits. This guy is less than 3/4" Square.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Here's a progress photo on Earl's Oil.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Earl's Oil is finished. Here's a photo. Hope you like it.
Karl
Another instant build by our resident Speed Demon. ;D ;D ;D
Great job Karl. I really like the fence sections.
Jim
Hi guys:
Saulena's Tavern is next
Karl
Hi Guys:
Walls & windows are painted. Bracing and glass are installed.
Karl
Nice Karl , Saulena's was fun to build.
Is it me or are you posting smaller pictures now you're in N-scale :D :D :D

Tom ;D
Maybe he's just shrinking HO scale pictures. ;D
Jeff
Hi Jan, Tom & Jef:
Ha Ha yes they are half the size.
Karl
Hi Guys:
The Walls are assembled.
Karl
Hi Guys:
The roof is installed on to the cornice.
Karl
Hi guys:
Cornice underlayments are installed.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Cornice is finished.
Karl
Looking good Karl , I see you have the small problem I had with this kit too, the window even if touched only gently will move backwards , I just put on the Micro Klear ( or whatever you use for the glazing ) at the same time as putting in the windows , the Micro Klear glues the windows as well as making glass, hope you understand what I'm saying here.
Nice work on Saulenas Tavern Karl. I have this kit in a prominent position in the center of the Town of San Marino on the "new" JJJ&E. I built this kit about 13 years ago and has survived two layouts.
Stay cool and run steam........ 8) 8)
Karl,
Looks great my friend.
Tom ;D
Hi Jan:
that's pretty much what I did. It's the outside frames that move around. Just straightened it out.
Thanks:
Karl
Hi Bob & Tom:
Thanks for the compliments.
karl
Hi All:
The Building is finished. All I have left is to paint a few castings and install them. Hope it looks OK.

Looks great Karl , and I see you managed the stairs which was something I couldn't and replaced with covered stairs.
Hi Donato, Jim & Bob:
Thanks much for the compliments. Much appreciated as always.
Karl.
Hi Jan:
Tell me what the problem you had with the stairs was. Want to see if it was the same as I had. That stairway was one pain in the butt.
Thanks Karl
Hi Guys:
Saulenas Tavern is finished.
Karl
I've been following along Karl. These builds look absolutely wonderful. I bet you're ready to get back to some HO Scale builds soon. ;)
Hi Bob:
Thanks for the compliments I only have 4 more N-scale kits to build for Artie then back to HO. Whistle Stop junction Is next.
Karl

Whistlestop Jct is next.

Getting the steps in place with such a small bit of room, plus I believe the bottom ones just didn't fit , after messing around with them for what seemed ages , I just gave up and built myself an enclosed staircase.

Thanks for the info and the photo. I found the steps to be a little short and had to fool around with them a lot to get them in place.
Karl
Hi guys:
Got started and painted my walls with one of my favorite schemes. Here's a photo.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Windows doors and shades are installed. The walls are assemble and the self stick platform is applied.
Karl
Great colors Karl, looking good. I'm not sure about nails in N-scale though , even in H0 they are out of scale but look alright but in N-scale they are so much oversized I never do them , waiting to see how it looks when the build is finished.
Hi Jan:
Thanks for the compliment. I did not do the nails They are laser cut into the walls.
Thanks:
Karl
Looking good Karl..... 8) .....do you need a seeing eye dog yet? ;D

Karl
Hi All:
This one is finished.
Karl
Great job Karl. Ironic thread to me as one of your builds knocked me out of N scale. ;)
Thanks Again...John
Looks great in any scale, Karl.
Jeff
Hi John:
I don't understand How did I knock you out of N-Scale. Thanks for the compliment.
Karl
Hi Jeff:
Thanks Appreciate the compliment.
Karl
I think John meant that he changed to HO because of what he saw the great kits you were doing , and now you're showing that it can be done in N scale too.
I came home early from work (can't remember how that feels) and you offered to give your build of Fos' Pier 27 (real name?) to whoever messaged you. After ten seconds of calculations, I contacted you and you sent it to me. Before it arrived I had removed all N scale buildings, widened some curves, removed some crowded trackage and "Boom" I'm in HO narrow gauge (where I always wanted to be-but needed ONE more good reason to chuck it all)...never looked back!! :D
John
Hi Jan:
Thanks got ya.
Karl
Hi John:
Sounds good. Have fun with the narrow gauge.
Karl
Karl,
You eyes must be hurting big time from working on those small structures. I admire you for being able to take your skills in HO and move it into N scale.
When do you return to HO structure?
Hi Marty:
Thanks for the compliment.
I have 1 more kit to build for Bar Mills. Until he sends more to me. I started it today. It's Majestic Hardware. I doing something haven't done for a while. A blue building. Foundation is assembled and walls are painted.
Karl

Hi Guys:
Walls are painted Great Northern Big Sky Blue, with A&I wash and gray dry-brushing.
Karl

Karl
Very nicely done Karl. :) 8)

Nice job Karl. I built the HO Scale version of Majestic Hardware and I had the same thoughts.
I remember building the N-Scale version of Majestic Hardware for John (Cuse) a while back. It was a challenge (that's the polite way of saying a pain in the butt). :D It's a neat looking structure though. What you've done so far looks great Karl.
Karl,
Wow, great job my friend, great job on the kits.
Tom ;D
Hi Bob & Tom:
Thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated. Bob you always do a great job with the kits and so do you tom.
Here's some progress photos. I fixed the crooked window.
Karl
Karl,
You have been a busy person lately with all these N scale kits. I have always enjoyed the Bar Mills kits. Your are looking great as always.
Hi Steve:
Thanks buddy always appreciate your comments.
Karl
Looking good Karl , N-scale suits you well.
Hi Jan:
Thanks. I finally got the roof done on this guy. Hope it looks Ok.
Karl
Looks good to me , the larger tower fits well on the H0 version , just a tiny bit of pressure needed, did you have to do a lot of sanding or such on the N-scale one?
Looks like a gap between the two high roofs and the structure, or is it just the picture? The blue looks good, I wouldn't have thought GN Big Sky Blue would look good on anything, it's so bright. :)
Jeff
Hi Jan:
did some sanding and also added trim around the bottom to cover any gaps. glad to hear the HO version fits well.
Karl
Hi Jeff:
Not sure I will check it when I get home from work.
Karl

Karl you are doing and excellent job on all of these n-scale kits.
Best looking "Smurf" I have seen in a long time.

Excellent Karl . One of the main differences in H0 scale is that it has templates for painted signs, or are they in the N-scale kit too.
Hi Jeff, Rich and Jan:
Thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated as always.
Karl
Hi Jan:
Yeah the templates were in there. I just didn't use them. Waiting for some new kits to arrive,

Karl,
Nice job. Majestic hardware was the first model that I built since I retired and got back in the hobby. Well, I have stopped building since.
Hi Steve:
Thanks for the compliment. How come you stopped building?
Karl
Hi All:
Got my next shipment from Bar Mills. I'm Starting on Billings Baked Good. This one will be with White walls & white windows.
Karl
Looks like a neat structure Karl.....would make a great HO scale kit. :)
Look at that!!!!!!! The walls are finished already.
Speedy work by Karl the Magnificent.
Jim
Hi Greg:
I could agree with that.
Karl
Hi Jim:
Thant's just the main building walls. There's lots more walls to go.
Karl
Hi Karl,
I had to go to work for a living and I did not have the patience anymore. I had to move around a lot also in my job. This looks like a fun build.
Hi Steve:
Sorry to hear that. Yeah it should be fun.
Karl
Hi All:
Here's a progress photo of where I am on the walls. There are no Freight doors as Lenny forgot to put them in the kit. They are on the way. Artie wanted White On white so that's what I'm doing.
Karl
Hi guys:
Ok all the walls are done except for the doors. Waiting for them to arrive in the mail.
Here's how they were painted:
1) A& I stain was the first coat.
2)Americana Snow (Titanium) Whit Acrylic Craft paint was 2nd coat.
3) Light A&I stain was the final coat.
Hope the look ok.
Karl
Hi guys:
Haven't posted in bit on this. I taking quite a different approach on this one as when the kit was shipped some parts were missing and am waiting for them to arrive. Hopefully today. I'm doing sub assembles. I assemble main front platform last night. I try and post a pic today.
Karl
Karl,
Just saw that you started yet another build for Billings Baked Goods. Looks great so far, really like the white on white, I'll be following along.
Hi Jerry:
Thanks for the compliment. I was never much for white buildings but I'm changing my mind. I think it actually looks pretty good. I have talked to Artie at Bar-Mills quite A bit about this and he has changed my mind about it. We will see how it comes out in the end.
Karl

here's a progress shot of the front platform on the front wall. Not glued yet.

Thanks buddy. Appreciate it.
Karl
Karl,
Looks like you have been really busy too . Keep building those smaller than HO ones ! Nice work...
Tommy
Karl,
Great work, I would swear it was HO if you hadn't told us it is really N scale. Super job!!!
Karl,
Not much else to say other than all the structures are museum quality. Really wonder and fantastic.
Tom ;D
Hi Tommy, Jerry & Tom:
Thanks for all the great compliments. Much appreciated.

Karl,
This is so far beyond "OK". Another stellar structure, somehow you keep raising the bar higher with every build.
Hi Guys:
I'm on my second build of Majestic as Artie at Bar Mills didn't like my blue color scheme. Here's a few photos using Frank Bernard's color scheme.
Karl
The Blue was nice but liking this compo better.
rich
Hi Rich:
Yeah I like this scheme better also. Thanks for the compliment.

Great job on this one as well. The color combo is well done.

Both look great , but I must agree this color combo looks better.
Hi Jan:
Thanks. I agree with you on the color combination. This one look much better. Thanks for the compliment.
Karl
I think blues don't look that good for us most of the time because we're just not used to seeing blue structures in real life, especially not the darker blues.

Thanks. I totally agree with you.

Hi Guys:
Here's a progress shot on Majestic. I know the roof tower doesn't look so hot. It doesn't fit well at all and I had to use tar to cover up all the gaps. Also have to paint under the roofs
Karl
Hi All:
This one is done. On to the next one.
Karl
Looks good Karl. What does Artie say about the tower not fitting really well. The H0 kit does not have this problem at all.
Karl,

Now that you're finished, I have to ask.....did working in N scale make you blind or do you just need glasses? ;D ;D ;D

Actually I can still see. I've had the glasses for a while. I wasn't to bad although I wouldn't want to do it all the time.
Karl
Great work Karl and if Bar Mills does not make more N scaleI have some you can try :)
