John,
Once again, a big "Thank You!" for taking the time to post all these photos of the F&SM.
Here is what I have of this area. Reading Bob built Wolcott's for the A&S RR. So, I have lots of this structure and surrounding area.

Jim,
You are quite welcome. I just follow John's lead.

I just love this thread, Thank-you! For years all I had was the photo book! BTW, any idea/guess on the "population" of the FSM? I was thinking of how many pigeons were on the layout and then I wondered if there was a guess on how many people figures there were!

I'm glad you are enjoying the thread. I'm counting the structures as I post them, but I will leave the counting of the people and pigeons to someone else. My guess is about 10 times the number of structures on the people - pigeons maybe 8 times. ;)
I just loaded up picture number 3800 into the gallery.
A little to the right of Bartholow Coal and at a lower elevation we have The W.J. Hamilton Coal Company.

Thanks again Gents for the awesome thread. Something I have been meaning to ask for a while... Is that abandoned switching tower by Bailey's Produce a kit?

Hi Bobby thanks for stopping by the thread.
I don't know about the abandoned tower - I will add it to my list of questions for George the next time I call him. I don't recognize the castings. Can anyone else help with Bobby's question?

Bobby,
You are very welcome. John and I are glad to have the opportunity to post all the pictures George let us take last March.
To answer your question, yes, the abandoned tower is across the double track mainline and behind Bailey's Produce.

Bobby,
A little over a third of the way down on page 5 of this thread, John has a couple of great photos showing Bailey's in relation to the abandoned tower.

John & Tom,
Once again, many thanks for taking the time to post all these wonderful photos.
Hi. I'm trying to find the pictures of the elevated highway that runs over the yard tracks. Short of navigating through all three threads and thousands of pages, I was hoping you could direct me to their approximate location. Many thanks.
p.s. Update. I seemed to have just found some at the end of the Details thread. If there are any other pages that cover this section, I'd appreciate knowing where to find them. Thanks, again.

Each thread has an index on page 1 and there are two areas that fit your description. Colbert yard and Filmore Yard both have elevated highways. I hope this helps - thanks for following along.
Thanks very much, John. And thanks for doing all this. It's a terrific record of a real treasure.
I love the abandoned tower,,,,,I kick myself for not getting the Bailey's kit,,,,oh well, there is always EBAY!
Hey Bob, Baileys is a real easy scratchbuild. It was the first FSM building I scratchbuilt. And, I know someone that has the plans and instructions if the urge strikes. Don't want to hijack, so will shut up now, except to thank John and Tom for all of the great F&SM pictures and for all of the hard work you're putting into these threads.

Your welcome to Bob, Jerrman, and timbob60. Thanks for following along.

Like so many others, I have always loved that little Texaco garage George built. I wonder how many modelers have built copies over the years?
Here's one. Sorry.

Nice build! George really likes to see builds like this. The reason for this thread is for people to be able to see his work and use it for inspiration.

I'm sure there have been many. I'm glad you are enjoying the thread.
Directly behind Honey Bee Dinner we have the South Manchester Depot. I took a lot of pictures of this area - very highly detailed - and in my opinion some of George's best modeling. I decided to post the details.

When I see all the great detail in the F&SM I just wonder , did/does George have any other hobbies, and is George 130 years old and has been retired for 65 years or more, I just can't believe the amount of time that went into his layout.
Again , thanks for sharing the best thread on the internet.

Jan,
George & I sat down and figured up from all the time spent on the layout came out to be about 9 years of 40 hours a week work to what is known today 2017. Of course George has added some 2 dozen or so buildings and is busy redoing scenes on portions of the layout in the original island.
It's a good thing George is so darn wallabee fast! or we would have to wait another life time to see what we can see during an open house now. Thanx Thom...
Is the Spring/Summer viewing schedule announced?

Re. the American Tool and Die building--- are those walls from a kit (Magnuson?) or something that George made?
thank you for all the work that you are doing for this thread!
Bob, Magnuson Models Victoria Falls Hotel. Looks like he used 2 kits.
I see, thanks!
Dan and Bob
Thanks for stopping by the thread. I think you will find a piece of every kit Magnuson made somewhere on the F&SM. George definitely figured out how to make plastic not look like plastic.
I'm working on getting the next batch of pictures ready to post.
Before moving farther into South Manchester I want to go back and post pictures of a couple more structures that are behind the structures we just reviewed.
The first is Spot Cash Wholesale Grocers.

John,
Interesting post(s). You know I have never seen boards, tires etc on any roof in my life time. They still look interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I need to take a look at the shots I took from the front but I know I couldn't reach that far with the camera from either side.

I need to dig into my photo archives - but I have. My wife and I try to take the secondary roads as we travel around the country and we always stop and take pictures of the "George structures" (Amy's name for them) we find.
It's time to take an overview of the next section we will be reviewing and get caught up on our structure count. First here is a few overview shots of our next section.

I'm not sure if John took all his photos with his camera and camera stick but I've noticed a very big difference in my pictures. The ones I took with my little SONY Cyber-shot are far better pictures than the ones I got using my 35m digital camera.
My wife's Ipad takes better pictures than any camera I've seen. In fact all the pictures I've uploaded to my A&S RR thread have all been taken with the SONY Cyber-shot. Anyway, just an observation.
Here are a few of the Westside Auto I took using the 35 digital camera.

Tom,
As much as I call myself the most fortuitous modeler on the planet being able to work with George on the F&SM. I still can't call myself a person with a gifted eye! See, you post all these fabulous pictures on this wonderful thread.
As I look closer to the pictures I noticed the deliberate angles and views and notice most of these shots are actually by design. Me? I look at the layout almost every week and can't see the views like you show.
I can't see the layout for the structures. ha. When I look at your pictures, I actually get to notice what I don't really look at. Shame on Me! Thank you for wakin' me up brother! Thanx Thom...
Thom,
Thanks very much. I didn't know if I would ever make it back so I shot all I could fit in the time slot.
Yes, you are most fortunate to be part of the "inner circle". I can certainly understand if you look at the F&SM differently than most. When we you see something everyday or several times a week it all just seems to blend in and we actually take our great fortune for granted.
I think your focus with George is mostly getting stuff to run ie, track, turnouts, motive power, signals, and etc. You see the layout but never see the structures for what they are.
You said you cant' see the layout for the structures. I think you mean you can't see the structures for the layout.
Anyway, it is certainly John and my pleasure to show the forum members just how wonderful and very unique this layout actually is.

Let's take a few steps back and look at an overview of the area we are currently viewing. Behind Westside Auto we have two more FSM kits. First we have Skinner's Row and on the street behind Skinner's we have Dexter's Dead End.

Hi John:
Thanks for the great new photos. Enjoyed them much.
Karl
As usual, great photos. I really appreciate the work that goes into this thread, and the sharing of these photos!
What does George use to make his streets? Is it plaster? Does he have any special technique when he spreads out the material?
Thanks!

Has anyone else noticed how many exquisite vehicles George has in his scenes? They add so much to his incredible structures and scenery.
Jerry,
When I visited the F&SM in March of 2016 I made a mental count of the vehicles as I took several hundred pictures.
I gave up at 250+ vehicles.

At this point we have gone over the 500 structure count (with many more to go), and I would guess there are three vehicles for every structure. Another fun fact would be how many figures are on the layout?

Brakies Garage, Riffraff Cafe, J.M. Dunnel's, Polermo & Son, Schraders were all structures in the middle of layout island. I didn't want to lean over the layout. What I did was hold the camera over my head, zoomed in and started taking pictures.
I couldn't aim the camera but I got a few decent shots out of fifty that were no good.

I think Tom is caught up to me so it's time to move on to the next section. Tom really got some nice closeups.
I have one more structure to add before moving on to Port Harbor. This is R.J. Scoots Coal Dealership. George named this structure after one of his cats. I didn't get a good closeup of this one and I loose to much resolution when I do a digital zoom.

I have no photos of the Scoots Coal Dealership. Well, I have a small roof section but not worth showing.

Okay - we will move on to the next section. I know I had some good closeups in the first thread on the F&SM (see the index if you are looking for more photographs of any particular structure).
Please note: I'm counting boats, pile drivers, and coal barges as structures.
Our next section is Port Harbor. Let's start with the dock side pump house.

The center piece of the Port Harbor is the South Manchester Draw Bridge. This structure is on my list for a scratch build so I took lots of pictures. I started to edit how many I would post here but then decided since I have them I will post them - someone else may find pictures at all the different angles useful. If you get tired of looking at all the pictures of this structure please feel free to skip ahead.

John,
George wanted me to inform the readers of this thread that he is almost finished re-detailing the Big Wooden Port Harbor Chain Driven DrawBridge. He hopes to finish early next week. I'll post a couple detailed pics of it as soon as I get'em taken. Thanx Thom...

Your timing is perfect - my next structure is going to be the Bus Terminal.
Jan
I agree - very nasty place to take a swim.
So today, I got a call from Thom and it appears that one of George's retirement projects is a makeover of the South Manchester Bridge. He is adding more details based from the original magazine articles on the prototype - I posted some pictures from that article on the previous F&SM thread. Thom promised some pictures of the new and improved version when he visits George next week.
Hi John:
Nice close ups of the bus station. thanks.

Okay - I got carried away with the pictures of the inside of the bus terminal. It is just amazing the detail that George had inside that never gets seen by his visitors. I reached 4 feet into the layout and stuck a camera inside the doorway to get the interior pictures.
Not sure what the off yellow building is named. I think it is an old Magnuson kit and is across the street from the Bus Terminal.

Several kits of this building have been available through the years from Magnuson and Walthers. It represents a building on Water Street in Milwaukee that was briefly the headquarters for Walthers. They may still offer a variety of it. George's model has been shortened on the front facade.

Matt,
I should have stated that it is a Magnuson kit # 439-542, 1245 N. Water Street Milwaukee, WI. I have two still in the box of this kit.
George cut this one down to fit the space. He has a hundred+ Magnuson kits on the layout and all if not most are all kit bashed.

Correct! but also George added a covered stair walkway and elevator shaft house, just to the right to help hide the wires from the Miller Engineering sign, when viewing from the side. Enjoy! T...

Thanks for adding the pictures of the continually changing F&SM. It's going to be interesting to see how much the layout evolves now that George is retired.

It looks like Tom caught up with his pictures tonight so I'm going to start the next area.
Let's start with a picture count update - I just loaded picture number 4200.
I'm going to do one more section of South Manchester and then update the structure count. So here it goes.
Next to the South Manchester Bus Station we have the Burrows & Bush building.

Hi JohN;
Really great photos. I built the DUZ and Coffee Cup billboards many years ago. I built 2 of each and still have mine.
Karl
I have several pictures of this area and will upload them early this afternoon.

So that I can learn how things were done in the past: Re. the ice structure in front of the grocers- they would send the ice down the cute and drop into the box car from the top?
Thanks for posting the photos! I just can't get enough of the FSM!

That is my understanding. The practice is way before my time. In this area they would cut blocks of ice from the lakes in the winter and store them all summer. One of the materials they used for insulation in the ice houses was sawdust from the lumber mill. I have seen pictures of the process taking place on the lake less than a mile from my house.
Now let's move to the front of the layout with Hiram Sibley & Co. Seeds.

If anyone talks to George, ask him if he'd recommend that dropped ceiling for a layout room. I had something similar in the previous house, and thought it contributed to dust and dirt on the layout.
Thanks! dave
I'm waiting on some land forms to dry so I'll add a few of my FSM of this area.
I'll add the rest later this evening or tomorrow evening.

Dave,
George says the drop ceilings catch all the dust floating around above them and if you don't touch them (which he has no need too. They work, However you still need to cover the layout whenever not in use.
George's layout after 30 years is almost completely dust free. It's never been cleaned or really needed it. The oldest isle has the most, which is some light traces of dust. George said yesterday he's been on dust patrol while upgrading & updating the oldest 1986 part of the layout for the last couple weeks.
I've taken pictures since and have not noticed any difference other than the scenery and road changes. He's been redoing his roads all through Manchester & parts of South Manchester. This past month and parts of Doverton.
George says you should watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yO8oa6bvwmE&feature=youtu.be Hope this helps! Thanx Thom...

That John guy sure is keeping me busy! Here are about 20 more of the area John is highlighting.
Many of our pictures appear to be the same picture. However, there is a slight difference in the angle and distance from the scene.

Looks like we are right together. I have a few detail pictures of the buildings that I will share before we turn the corner. I have been having a slow go of it the last few days with uploading photographs. I'm not sure why - internet seems to be slow.
John,
I, myself, have been slow also. Some of the areas on the layout afford us only one view to take a picture. The road tunnel and some streets between the buildings are two cases in point.
Tom ;D
John & Tom,
Once again, thank you both for taking the time to post these wonderful photos.

Hi Tom
Yeah, the slowdown seems to be with the forum. I started posting only one picture per post because it was getting really slow. I tried taking pictures by placing the camera down the narrow streets in this area. The camera was just too close to get a good focus in many cases. We are getting close with this project. ;) ;D

You are very welcome. I have really enjoyed this project - George is so busy changing things we will have to do it again in a few years. ;)
Here are the detailed pictures that I took of the structures in this area. Let's start with the Bar & Grill and J. Baum Tobacco Co.

John & Tom,
Once again, thank you both for taking the time to post these wonderful photos.
Jerry,
As John mentioned, you are welcome. I'm very pleased to have been invited to view and photograph the F&SM. Therefore, I'm happy to share what pictures I have.
Tom ;D
For some reason this area of the F&SM has fascinated me. Like all of the layout, there are so many structures and mini scenes around the structures. The photo count John has been keeping will certainly go up after this section of our photos.

Perfect timing Tom. I have the pictures of this section all loaded up and ready to post.
First, let's start with Wanda's Cafe. I had a special request to take lots of pictures of Wanda's Cafe and Watkins Salvage I think you will agree that the mission was accomplished.

John,
Good deal. I think I love this area when it was the old Trainor Industries area. I really liked those structures. George told me he remove Trainor's as he couldn't see down the tracks due to the height of Trainor Industries.
I'll get mine ready and will post later this weekend.

This picture looks like it's from Frank Baker's layout. Let's see if he finds this post.
Moving to the front of the layout we have Dexter Box Company.

When viewing some of the structures on the F&SM, you need to shoot the picture through some plexiglass. Often i got a picture of me taking the picture in the reflection of the plexiglass. I didn't know George or
Thom well enough on my first visit to ask Thom to remove it for a better picture.
Due to this, you see many of my pictures looking down on a sturcture and not many of a street level view. When photographing through the plexiglass, it distorts the color just enough to where is looks different.
The yellow Dexter's Box Co. in one such example. You can see the color change from the top views vs the street level view.

John and others following along -
This last patch, 100+ pictures, took me the better part of three days to upload, crop, clean and post to the forum.
I thoroughly enjoy adding my photos to John's wonderful thread. However, I really need to concentrate on getting my layout ready for the NMRA National Convention here in Orlando starting July 30, 2017. I'm on the layout tour.
I'll pick up where I left off and get caught up with John pictures sometime in August of 2017.
Tom ;D
Tom,
Thanks for the wonderful pictures! I know it's a lot of work to produce a quality product. Now hurry up and finish your damn layout ;D Good luck with your open house. I know it will be awesome. Thanx Thom...
Looking forward to them, Tom. Everything in its own time! We appreciate all your efforts in adding to the thread.

Dave,
Thank you also. I is very time consuming but John and I do enjoy posting the pictures of the F&SM.
Tom ;D
Hi Tom:
Great pics. Really enjoyed them.
Karl
Tom
As you know, I fully understand the need to get back on your layout. I have a plan - I will add my pictures of the next section over the next month or so and then we will take the month of August off. When you get back after the convention and caught up, I will pull into Filmore yard. I have a number of tasks to complete - like getting caught up with the index and structure count that I can get done during that time. Good luck with the convention - I know your layout is going to look great.
It's time to add some more pictures to this thread. I'm in the process of adding them to the gallery - posting should start soon.
Hi Tom and John,
thanks for taking the time to post these fabulous photo's to the forum.

Spent a good 2 hours studying this last batch...great fun. That Mitchells & Butlers stumped me for days when I was indexing and locating buildings in my batch of pictures. A real stumper. Thanks for the update!

George details everything - it is what makes his work so amazing.

I've spent a lot of hours studying photographs of George's layout. I always come away with a new detail that I didn't see the last time. It has been about a year and a half since my last visit and I'm noticing lots of details that he has added. You captured a number of them with the pictures you shared with us. I'm planning to do another shoot of the layout when George tells me the time is right.
Need anyone to hold lights? 😁 Great to have it so well-documented. Thinking of the lost Gorre & Daphetid, among others.

This next batch of photographs I'm going to call trackside buildings. No real names but great looking structures that add a lot to the F&SM.

While waiting on some of my layout stuff to dry, I spent a few hours uploading and cropping the F&SM pictures I have of this area.
I apologize as some of them are out of order to each other but they are all in the same layout area.

ACL 1504,
I just love the nicely framed shots of George's layout. Each time I peruse them, I get the sense of all the details the master put into each scene to bring life to a static model. You have a good eye for all of George's details. KP-out...
Hi Tom:
Great photos. My favorite gas station on the F&SM. Except for the Richfield station that I built.

Karl,
You are welcome and thank you. The Richfield Gas Station is one of my favorites. You did a fantastic job on it.

We are getting close to the end of this tour. I will be posting the detail photographs of Fillmore Yard in the next few days. I have been talking to George about doing a - what has changed tour in a year or two. The way he is working on the layout their will be plenty of changes.
J~,
Oh yeah, since his retirement started. George is a building fool. I bet he adds to the size of the layout along with just adding structures. T...
It's time to finish this thread. I have been traveling the last couple months and there were just to many cool things to see and explore to spend any time in hotel rooms posting pictures. We left off with overall pictures of Filmore Yard. I will now - over the next few days post the pictures I took of the individual structures. I'm going to start with the structures that are in the foreground of the scene and then cover the structures that makeup the background. I'm off to load up the gallery.
Okay, I'll get mine ready.

Sounds good Tom - I'm loading mine in the gallery and should start posting soon.
So here we go - first I need to explain how I photographed Filmore Yard this time. I think we did a pretty good job of documenting most of the structures in the yard in the previous thread so this time I took pictures that I thought added a different view or perspective because I could reach in to the scene with my camera on the end of the 4 foot arm extender. As I said above I will first post the pictures of the structures in the foreground of the yard and then move on to the background structures.
Lets start with this tower and loading platform.

My picture count for F&SM pictures posted here on the forum is 4849. This doesn't include the Pictures that Tom and others have posted. George and I have already discussed doing a Volume 3 when he has completed a couple years of expansions and changes. I will buy a plane ticket as soon as George give me the green light.
I want to thank George for allowing us to take these pictures and share them here on the forum.
I will update the index and the structure count posts as soon as Tom gets a chance to complete posting his photographs.
What a great ride this thread has been. Gonna enjoy it for many hundreds of hours to come. 👍🏻
Okay, here are some 90+ of my next picture set.
I'll try to keep them in close proximity of the area but I did jump around John when he was in a certain area. I them went back to that area when he finished. So, I have photos of the F&SM in several different files.
However, they are all in the Filmore Yard area.

Great pictures Tom. When you made the comment about jumping around me - it gave me an idea - I may just post the bloopers at the end of this thread. The ones where certain forum members ended up in the background of some pictures. I may have all those electrons that ended up on the cutting room floor.
John,
Good, idea. I believe I cut out all the visitors from my pictures. I do have about a hundred more of ones that appeared to be either duplicates or very similar.
I also have about 30 F&Sm videos. Some 15 seconds and some around a minute.

Tom
I will wait until you tell me that you have posted all your photographs and then wrap up the index and add the bloopers etc. I think you should start another thread in the S&SM category for your videos. I just don't want to have space issues on a thread or some other crazy problem with the videos. I think they would make a great addition. I actually shot some video's myself to help me place structures on the layout - I found them very helpful as we sorted the pictures for this thread.
Hi John:
Thanks for all the great F&SM pics.
Karl
John,
I'll try to finish these over the next few days.
I'm not even sure I'll post the videos until I learn how to do some basic editing. No need to post a F&SM video that is 20 seconds or so.
I plan to start a F&SM thread titled, "Miscellaneous F&SM Photos". I have a few hundred from the cutting room floor.

John,
Yes, you are welcome to post what you have.

Sounds good Tom - I'm glad you kept a count - together we are getting close to 7000 pictures. The way George is changing the layout we will have to do it again in a couple years. I talked to George today and he told me he is competing a new town.
Thank you for the great pictures Tom!!

Thank you for the great pictures Tom!!
Leo,
You are very welcome.
Tom ;D
Well, I'm at the end of my pictures for this thread. During the postings I kept finding more pictures of areas I went back to.
Those were the areas where John and Jaime were working.
Many of those didn't get posted as John and I had already moved onto another area of the F&SM.
Later this year, I'll go back and post a thread titled, "Extra F&SM pictures". Anyone is free to post to that thread as I know Reading Bob, Erieman, S&S RR and Jaime took many photos as well.
If I ever get another chance to take several hundred more F&SM photos, I'd do many thing different. Mainly, I'd get more track side level views and pay more attention to the smaller details.

Thank you John for allowing me to post my pictures to this thread.
Thanking George goes without saying.

Yes, and the Warden took the picture. Thanks for doing that for us.
Not pictured was Thom behind the camera.
mmmm, model railroaders look similar all across the world, I would easily fit in.
Here is the photo that includes Thom. It will be left to the viewer to figure out who was behind the camera and what was said or done to get all those model railroaders to all smile at the same time.

I just realized that I have 129 pages to go through to update the index. So it will be awhile before I can make it happen but I'm going to get started. I will also be finishing the structure count to wrap this thread up. George is busy making changes and additions to the F&SM so a return trip is planned in a year or two that will document the changes. I can't wait.
Thanks for all the time and effort You and Tom put into the 2 FSM threads, best thread ever on a MR forum.

You are welcome! I have learned a lot about modeling doing this project. I love the way George takes a design feature from here, a piece from there, and details from everywhere, and then combines them into a unique wonderful scene - that just looks right. I have looked at these pictures many times and last night when I started updating the index I found myself studying them once again. I always manage to see new details.
I ditto all the previous dittos and ditto of the dittos....
I really appreciate this thread. Just gotta go see it in person again someday.

I'm still working on the index - I haven't forgotten about it. Please stay tuned.
I talked to George Sellios this morning and he has moved some old kit making equipment out of the room that houses the F&SM to make room for the expansion of the F&SM. We also talked about more changes to the current layout. It is sure great to see George enjoying his retirement.
John,
Great news from George about a future F&SM expansion ! ;)
Thanks for all you have done keeping these FSM threads going and documenting everything too.

Your welcome! It's amazing how many people view this thread every day.
Ditto to all the aforementioned dittos...
The three threads that comprise the F&SM Pictures averaged 763 views per day the last 60 days. I have been keep track of it for the past 2 years and this views per day number has ranged between 427 and 846. That is an amazing interest in George's work.
The view count for our three F&SM picture thread has now reached 585,233 views.
John, if this was You Tube, you'd have money coming your way ;D ;D
John,
This group of F&SM photos is by far the best anywhere. I am not surprised it is the "go to" thread for modelers looking for detailed photos of George's modeling. It is disappointing that with all the views, the Forum doesn't seem to acquire any more active modeler members.

It's worth all those big dollars not to have the adds flashing in your face. ;) ;D

Not every modeler is interested in posting on the forum. It takes time. I enjoy it or I would use the time doing something I enjoyed. I'm happy so many people have taken the time to look at George's wonderful layout and keep coming back for inspiration.
George wanted me to post some photos of a new trackside water tank he added to Beaver Meadows this week.
He's also been busy adding building flats to the new addition.
Dan
Thank you for the updates. It sure must be nice to live close enough to the F&SM to make regular visits. Please keep us up-to-date on George's progress.
Update: It has been a couple years since I woke these threads up and moved them to the top of the stack. George and I talk on regular bases and we planned on doing an update photo shoot in 2020. Like everything else in 2020 it has been postponed - to a time when we have a vaccine and travel through out the land is again safe. George has been keeping busy making changes to the F&SM. He describes changes to me and then we talk about what's going to get changed, next. I can't wait to get there - hopefully a 2021 trip. Until then, I revisit these pictures and find something new every time I look through them.
