Hi all,
Having set the example, let me follow my brother from another mother! Here's a collectors patch with a couple custom lettering/weathering engines for a humble railroad. Thanx Thom...
Hi everyone,
Can't help it, ACL 1504 done flung a craven on me. So here's my fill. A custom build cast American 4-4-0. (you can't buy one of these) (it's custom built & lettered). Thanx Thom...
Thom,
I love 4-4-0's, and that one is absolutely beautiful!

Jerry,
Thanks for the nice comments. You're too kind. Your check is in the mail. Thanx Thom...
This one fell off the layout! ;D
Now it's on the bench being stripped for parts.
Raymo,
I know someone in Orlando who could fix it for you! If you're nice to him, he might even test run it on his layout once completed. Thanx Thom...
The only one painted blue. This one almost was saved, it was donated to Nelson Blount before he started Steamtown. When he started up Steamtown he sent it back to the B&M.
This E-7 in the as delivered "Rock Island" scheme, Maroon and Imitation Silver which was more like a whiteish grey. Check out the buildings in the background.
B&M SW-8 #804 in dire need of new paint. This was the "look" for a lot of these maroon and gold units in the 70's
I recently was handed two more FT units to weather up. The backstory to these two units: The F&SM wanted to try cleaning some of their passenger engines with acid wash to more quickly cut through the grime quicker.
And when workers just couldn't get a handle on how to clean off the grime and leave the paint. So that process was abandoned long ago. So peeling paint is the order of the day. Thanx Thom...
Those Engines sure do need a wash and paint job......They are looking bad. :o :o :o
Jim
Hi Thom:
Nice job on the F&SM FT's. they look great.
Karl
Tinx, Jim & Karl for the very nice comments! I received some very nice comments on all four FT engines plus the B&M 4-4-0 & railbus at George's open house last Saturday, which was packed with a very fun start to this first year's retirement from Fine Scale Miniatures. Thanx Thom...
The passengers riding behind those FTs must get awfully cold in those Peabody, or is it South Manchester winters.

Bob,
I don't know if anyone gets cold on the F&SM rr. I haven't seen a snowflake in over 30 years there. ha. If I ever get handed a steam generator car though, I'll make sure the passengers don't even see an chilly day either. Thanx Thom... What say you George? Got steam?
Most of those North Shore riders are probably yankees which means that, to them at least, cold is relative.
Most of them walked five miles up hill to school in shorts through drifts of snow and repeated the process in the afternoon, uphill all the way home. They'd be happy to be inside a car out out of the elements, but it ain't never gonna' be as cold as it was when they were kids.
Been there, know that.
Here's a few pics of steam & diesel lettered for the Franklin,Hamilton & Essex Railroad. The 2-8-0 Has full Dcc sound with lighting and the RS-2 has peeling paint weathering. Thanx Thom...

Brother Thom,
The FT's look fantastic. Very well weathered.

ACL 1504,
Thank you for the kind & appreciated comments on the engines. I admit doin' these simple models for George were a lot of fun since they have minimal detailing (which almost never happens for mee) ha.
Hey! was wondering since you went and stubba yourself, are you able to suck you metatarsal yet? I ask only because those of us in the know, already are aware of the digitus manus primus suckin' when bad gluein happens on your AS build. ;)
Take care-don't walk... T...
Thom,
The consolidation looks like an old PFM Ma & Pa, although the pilot seems off for what you have there. Besides what you mentioned id you modify it at all, change the pilot if it is a Ma & Pa before resurfacing it with the paint job. Nicely done by the way, worn enough to show it still has life left in it.
Bob
Bob,
Thanks for the nice compliment. The model is a Akane model with some added detailing. It's a good little engine actually. Thanx Thom...
Hi all,
I forgot about this thread. I thought I'd post a couple pics of a transition diesel. Thanx Thom...
Hey Thom:
Wow great Ex Reading loco. It was my favorite RR as it went right through my hometown of Ambler, Pa. Thanks for the pics.
Karl
Thom,
Beautiful, er, crappy looking weathering. It's perfect. Well done sir.
Tom ;D
ACL 1504,
Thank you for the kind comment. I did this model some 15+ years ago. I have another same model sitting in a box and have been thinking I'd like to do a another one for a pair set. I'm thinking I can do a better job weathering with some of the newer techniques of today. ??? Thanx Thom...
Grand weathering Thom..... 8)
Hi all,
Thought I'd share! Thanx Thom...
If all the RR's painted their steam locos in gold like this one, many of us would have left ours in brass and not contacted Thoms Custom Trains for painting....just saying....
CB&Q 4-8-4 5632 from the collection of Marty Bernard which was posted on several FB forums.
Tommy
I remember that CB&Q paint job from old news photos in Trains Magazine. I'm not sure I saw it in color until it came up as an (IIRC) April Fools story in MR.
Tommy,
That's a really cool picture of a brass engine, I mean gold colored steal engine. ha. I wonder what the general public thought when they saw that engine in daily use back then. Thanx Thom...
Thought I'd share a basic plastic steam change up from a Virginian A-3 2-8-8-2 into a family member of the Flying Rio Grande L-103 2-8-8-2. Starting with removing all the stripes and lettering, then patch paint the black and add silver followed by moving some lines and air pumps to boiler front, I then added 4 tanks, changed the pilot details and added decals & 5 crew, doghouse & tender chains. Heavily modified the lead/trail trucks to actually operate and tweaked the CV's a bit. Nice Overall low budget Rio family member steamer.
I would have loved to add another day and a dozen details but I don't always carry the purse strings. I like this model's overall appearance and operation. I hope others will be inspired on theirs. Thanx Thom...
Thom,
I think a major part of this hobby is about choices, specifically, when is a model "good enough"? I find that to be very subjective as well as a completely individual choice. After all that editorial comment, let me get off my soapbox and say that IMO you transformed this engine into one that has the distinguishing characteristics of the prototype. The front mounted air pumps and the dog house are signature elements of the prototype Rio Grande engine. While there is still room for some added details, the bottom line is that this is one great looking model. Thanks for sharing.

Thom,
I agree with Jerry. The details you did add changed the entire appearance.
All I can say is WOW and well done sir. Great job at the transformation.
Tom ;D
Thanks guys!
Oh, I forgot to post this pic for those who ask why put a crew member on front for? T...
