Throw Back Thursday -
I moved this thread from the A&S RR thread as I felt it didn't really fit. I don't like the fact I can't resize some of the pictures. I'm still on the investigative side of that issue for but for now you'll just have to click on the picture to bring it to the correct size. I apologize for the inconvenience.
I thought it would be a neat idea to show old photos of some of my old layouts.
You can see the George Sellios influence in the next few photos of the harbor scene.
The viaduct was built using one block at a time. I think I had over 6,000 blocks. It was detailed on both sides as well as under the arch.

The three stall roundhouse was scratch built and had full interior walls. the turntable was an old SS Limited turntable. The pit was scratch build also.

Awesome modeling. Who manufactured the roundhouse?
The Roundhouse still lives. I used Tom's as a pattern and scratch built my 4 stall Roundhouse.

Thanks for following along. It was fun going through the old layout photos. Hard to believe that layout was 25 years ago.

Curt,
I appreciate you following along as well. This particular roundhouse was scratch built. However, I patterned it after the old Suydam Models kit.
Jim Miller, above, used my pattern to scratch build his four stall roundhouse.
When I was redoing the old, old layout, I dropped mine and it landed in a pile of a couple thousand pieces of strip wood.
The windows are Grandt Line roundhouse arched windows. I put scotch tape on the windows and the dust collected naturally to look like dirty windows. 8)

Jim,
That sure is one great looking roundhouse. You even have it painted in the A&S RR colors.

In the early 90's I needed to build a trestle and double track bridge.
Micro Engineering sold the deck girder kit for around $16.00 for four deck girder sides and some additional parts. I figured I would need 46 of the deck girder sides. To buy them all would have cost over $200.00. I made a RTV mold and mass produced the additional 42 sides in resin. I reduced the price to around 12 cents each.
They were painted silver along with the trestle supports.
The span measured around 6-7 feet in length.
The double track Warren Truss Bridge was kit bashed from two Central Valley bridge kits. Now, Central Valley makes a double track bridge. Mine was a marvel kit bash back in the early 90's.
Enough babbling - here are a few Throw Back Thursday pictures.

I have some very old videos of steamers on the high trestle I'll be sharing further in this thread.

After building the high trestle and double track Warren Truss bridge, I started work on the mountain area, mainly building the tunnel portals.
I needed one for the upper track and one for the lower track. Due to the close proximity of each other I needed the tunnel portals to look as if they were built at the same time by the railroad.

After finishing the high trestle and scenery around it, I kept moving to the left.
I visited Howard Zane one Christmas week and he showed me how to use the cardboard strips for a scenery base.
The mountain in the next few photos was done with this method. Once the strips were hot glued together, they were covered with contractors paper and a coat of glue was applied. Once the glue dried, the paper was hard/stiff.

I didn't do a lot of scenery on the old, er, older layout. I however, have enough to see the trains running at least through some scenery.
Here is where I started the scenery. I have more pictures of this area but can't locate them. When the thread has reached it's end, I'll find them.
This little garage was a freebie kit from FOS. It was the perfect size and fit for this little space on the layout.

(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080617162857.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080617162857.jpeg)
The retaining wall in the back of the power plant supports the second level between the roadway underpass and the start of the high trestle on the right.
The stone retaining wall is made up of over 1,200 individual Hydrocal blocks. I sure hated to remove this portion of the layout. The individual blocks were glued to a plywood frame.
More in a few.
This area was directly south of the power plant. You can see the waste pipes in the retaining wall. These are 1/2" brass tubes.
The large retaining wall to the left was made of .40" Evergreen Styrene sheets and painted UP Gray. The expansion joint lines were weathered using a #2 pencil. The rest of the weathering was done with pastel chalks.

I stand corrected.....I'll give it a try today, see ya soon. ;)
Greg,
I give you credit for trying. You actually got the loco around one time at normal speed. And then what happened? You went from 20-25 MPH to flat out 40 MPH+ in nothing flat.
But as you said, "I'll give it a try."
You should proud of the 5 minutes at 25 mph on the throttle.
Tom ;D
I really tried.....but I could tell that the engine wanted wanted the throttle opened up.....kind of like Secretariat at the Belmont in '73.
After I got home yesterday I had had a Diet Pepsi and after a couple of hours the shakes I got, from running at 25 mph, subsided. ::)
I'll have to give it a try again the next time I'm down.....well maybe the next time in a year or two! ;D
Suck it up Greg, I know you can do it. (some time)
Jim
My rock scenery back in 1995 was really very basic. The rock formations in the following pictures is a case in point. They were rock mold straight from WS. The actually scenery wasn't bad but the rocks look really out of place some 22+ years later.
I'm better at flat lander scenery than the mountainous type stuff.
This was the view coming around to the left of the high trestle area.

I've tried to get all the photos to the same size but since they are from an old computer and off a stick, I was unable to change the size on many of the pictures. So, click on the picture to get what I call a normal viewing size.
I wanted a small farm on the layout and this was the only area I had for the farm. It was on the curve where a double track ran above and a single track ran below the farm.
Just to the left of the farm a curved #8 turnout was installed for a passing siding.

Jeff
Jeff,
Sorry for the late response to your question.
The layout was changed due to me adding an addition 14 feet to the north end of the room. At this point I was only thinking of more room and not operations or scenery.
Tom ;D
As I mentioned to Jeff, I got permission from the City of Orlando, approving my permit, to enlarge the train room. I added another 14 feet to the north end of the room.
I started removing the old, old layout sometime in February or march of 2009.
I removed all of the layout from Three Pine Junction and everything north of that location. This also included the farm area I just finished a few months prior to the old layout redo.
Three Pine Junction below.

Tom,
At the risk of sounding facetious, did that house on wheels finally roll onto the tracks above? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D KP-out...
I had a lot of cork roadbed glued to the Homosote but not ballasted. After removing the track, I used a sharp 1" wide wood chisel to remove the cork. The chisel slid under the cork and it was as smooth to remove as pulling up masking tape.
Of course the cork roadbed had glue and Homosote glued to it.
At the time my Babe was spending an extended vacation in Baltimore. Yes, I was all by my lonesome. I had the brilliant idea of soaking the cork in the bath tub. After about 30 minutes I used a fingernail brush to remove the wet glue and Homosote.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-051017142156.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-051017142156.jpeg)
I then dried it all out in the sun. I figured I saved about two and a half boxes of cork. It was just as soft as if right out of the box new.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-051017142210.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-051017142210.jpeg)
I wouldn't try it if the Babe was in town. We got rid of the tub and only have showers now anyway.

In answer, yes, it rolled from old farm and settled at the new farm.

Bob,
A patois is a dialect of common people of a certain region. As an example, we as railroad modelers, speak a form of patois. For a 2-10-0, the Pennsy called them Hogs while non Pennsy people called them Decapods. We refer to 4-6-2 as Pacifics, etc. and etc.
The term Patois can best be described in language as slang or a dialect from a specific group of people.
An example would be like your closing of "See ya" is like a Jamaican saying, "Walk Good" or "Me soon come".
Now, aren't you glad you asked bredren,

I haven't posted to this thread in quite some time but since I can't work on the layout I'll add a little more to this thread.
The pictures shown above are of the older version of the A&S RR. I learned the paper and white glue mountain siding from Howard Zane. On one of my visits he was using the paper and glue to form some of his terrain.
Here is a fast forward view of the mountain side with light scenery. I say light as I wanted to get scenery on the layout and then make it more dense later. I never finished the scenery on this portion of the old layout.

Jan,
It was a long agonizing decision at first. I think the old layout was great for a double track mainline for running trains. I had upper and lower areas. The track to get from one to the other was hidden.
My main concern was it didn't afford me much room for all the structures I wanted to build. And, the mountain and hidden track took up a lot of space.
Hence the decision to redo.
Tom ;D
I ran out of time today to add to this post the pictures I planned for today.
However, here is the double track crossover. I called this crossover Mancuso Crossing. John Mancuso worried himself sick running a train over the diamonds.

She is my Grandfather's cousin.

I thought I'd show the pictures I have of the area on the old layout around the four diamond crossover.
Here is a view looking South.

This is a view south of the diamonds. The Miller Brewing was the end of this level. The large yard was below the brewery and on the lower level. I changed this and moved the brewery to the side and made the large yard on the upper level.
First though, more of the four diamond area.

Curt, Butts Meats Co is actually an old Fine Scale Minatures kit called "Butcher's Way" - Jewel Series # 11. Tom has renamed it from the original "Wolcott Meat Co".
The kit is out of production but, coincidentally, there is one available on eBay here:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Butchers-Way-Fine-Scale-Miniatures-Jewel-Kit-11-HO-JA19CK15/202195010834?hash=item2f13c30512:g:R5gAAOSwbP1aYkno
(No, it's not mine....I have an unbuilt one but I intend to build it.)
For what it's worth, the original selling price was $280.00. The current eBay price is $180....very good. The auction ends today.
BTW, here's a pic of the standard kit:

Thom,
Thank you and you are very welcome. Track work is very essential to having a layout that runs properly and efficiently. That was a cool track plan but all I could do was run trains with no ability to place the 200+ kits I have to build. Now, just 191 kits to build. ;D ;D

Looking back over the old pictures, tells me that I wasn't satisfied with the old layout. I kept changing the track plan or moving the track here or there.
Notice, I haven't changed anything or track on the new A&S RR. Yes, there will be one or two whom will say, "Yes, but there is still time". 8) 8)
Any hoo (sic), here is an area I think I changed three times.
This first set of pictures is of the lower south yard. This was long prior to going to DCC as I used DC analog PFM and PBL Fore Ground Sound.
This was in the late 1990's.

One of the things I enjoy building on any layout are the roads - dirt or concrete.
On the old Atlantic Coast Line RR, not yet renamed the Atlantic and Southern RR (also known as the ASS, Atlantic Southern System) my road started against the wall.
The road is concrete and passed under the double track main line.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318143708.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318143708.jpeg)
It then swung Southwest and then West towards Main Street.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318143728.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318143728.jpeg)
More in a few. I better get a cold Diet Pepsi now as I have lots of pictures to post.
Here it starts to parallel the lower level double track main.
That's me in the black and white waiting for the guy in the station wagon.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318143745.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318143745.jpeg)

(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080617162857.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080617162857.jpeg)

I wanted to extend the main highway West and North of the South Yard area.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318143828.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318143828.jpeg)
I used a track gauge and drew in where the road needed to go. I called this extension the South Yard Road, very original.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318144226.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318144226.jpeg)
More in a few.
I went down the road and measured the width of the road. I did this when there was no traffic coming. It measured 19 feet across with no curb.
I made my road 19 feet as well.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318143843.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318143843.jpeg)
Here is how I made this road extension using cork roadbed.
I purchased a large sheet of 2 ply cardboard from Sam Flax Art Supply and placed it over where I wanted the road.
I cut a piece of cork roadbed a scale 19' in length. I took one piece of cork and made the gentle S curve. I then used push pins to hold this piece in place.
I then did the same with the second cork piece using the scale short piece to keep the two pieces a scale 19' in width.

Continued -
Using the cork as a guide, the road came out a perfect match to what I drew on the Homosote.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318143900.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318143900.jpeg)
I then cut the roadway out of the cardboard sheet and lay it in place.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318144011.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318144011.jpeg)
I used this same process for the rest of the road.
More in a few.
I glued the road in place and since it was a paper product, I used any weight I could find to hold it until the glue dried.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318144120.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318144120.jpeg)
When the entire length of the road was complete, I drew in some expansion joints.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318144139.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318144139.jpeg)

(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318144200.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-150318144200.jpeg)
Here is the gentle "S" curve made using the cork roadbed as a guide.

Thank you Tom , great and simple road making . I do get confused , you have yellow markings in the middle , I assume you were/are modeling post 1961 , I am modeling 1960 Kansas and have white markings , is this correct?
Tom...
Great roads...... You have retained something that most people forget in today's modern and cleaned up environment.
Before the closed crank case breathers of 1974 and later auto engines, all breathers dumped over the side and most transmissions didn't hold oil very well. There were huge dark lines down the centers of the lanes in the road due to oil dripping everywhere.
Most people had to add at least a quart of oil between oil changes. Today I barely know where the dip stick is on my modern car. I sure know where it is on the '41 Chevrolet pick up and the '30 Model A.
Great modeling .... sir
see ya
Bob
Simple and ingenious. In a way similar to what I do, but yours I feel does a better job. Worth waiting for you to share with us.
Nice tutorial on making the roads, Ive always been a bit leary on making concrete roads.
Lots of nice stuff was going on with your old layout, why did you dismantle it? PS I still have to find your newest layout.

Thank you Tom , great and simple road making . I do get confused , you have yellow markings in the middle , I assume you were/are modeling post 1961 , I am modeling 1960 Kansas and have white markings , is this correct?
Jan,
Thank you for the compliment on the road making. Don't be confused, the white for your time period is correct and I should have used white as well. I had yellow on hand and just didn't think about my layout era at the time. My current layout is all white road striping.

Great modeling .... sir
see ya
Bob
Bob,
Thanks for stopping by and posting your thoughts. The oil is correct as you are in the leaking oil from early vehicles.
I had two old cars as a kid growing up. My first one was a 1947 FORD (FIX OR REPAIR DAILY) 4 dr. sedan, flat head 8. It used 1 quart every 600 miles. Didn't smoke but it did use the oil. It was an oil breather as well.
I don't even know where the dip stick is on my Lexus SUV.
My other car was a 1951 Ford sedan, flat head six. Burned oil every oil change as well.

Simple and ingenious. In a way similar to what I do, but yours I feel does a better job. Worth waiting for you to share with us.
Larry,
It is simple and effective. Using the short piece in the center keeps the correct spacing for the width as well.

Nice tutorial on making the roads, Ive always been a bit leary on making concrete roads.
Lynn,
Thank you, much appreciated. Making concrete roads is really easy. I think it can't get any easier than I explained.
I removed the old layout as I just wasn't happy with what I was doing. I didn't like the mountains as the ACL never went through any tunnels. Mountains take a lot of space and I wanted that space to go towards more traditional Florida scenery.

Thanks Tom I appreciate the links and will be following up. I can't say I even realized there were layouts on the site and to be honest I could have sworn I was a member here under the name Wickman, oh well a new beginning. I too started a new layout after taking down the old one, I like mountains and bridges but then again I live in Northern Ontario.
Tom great job on those roads. An a great way to them.

You are very welcome sir. I did like my high trestle on the old layout. It was literally over 8 feet in length but took up more room than I was willing to allow in the end.

I wasn't sure how I wanted to arrange the tracks leading to the roundhouse. I was reading the Richard Prince book on the NC&ST.L and saw an over head view of the tracks. The photo was taken from the top of the coaling tower in Richmond, VA.
Obviously I didn't have the room the railroad had so I modified it a bit.
First, I decided where the turn table needed to fit.

I'll add more next week. I added a building in the rear of the roundhouse and added a large diesel facility as well.
This was a fun layout but it didn't afford me any room to add southern scenery or many structures.
Impressive job. Building the roundhouse on site a good idea. Hardest part for me was getting the track laid out probably would like to do again but to much to do and to little time. Jim

Jim,
The roundhouse first made it easier for aligning the turntable. The homosote base made it easy to cut out the interior pits as well.
I appreciate you stopping by and posting a comment.

This next set of photos will be the last for the Throw Back Thursday thread. Yes, I do have about a hundred more of the old layout but I'm not interested in taking the time to crop, load and post them.
The 19 pages in the thread give you a pretty good idea of how I built and ran the old layout.
I will add that my Babe and I visited Cliff Powers in June and by December 2016 that same year, I was removing this layout and getting ready to build the current Atlantic and Southern RR.

Thanks for following. It was a fun layout and we had fun as the SGBs on some Saturdays. Mancuso Crossing was definitely a crossing you had to pay attention to.

Mancuso Crossing was so named due to John Mancuso (Cuse) panicking at the crossing.

Jeff,
Well, yes and no. Yes, in that it was a lot of work to do and then take down. Mainly No, as the new A&S RR. is much better and really allowed me to more express my talent in scenery and structure building.
The old layout took space that the new one gives me for the building and scenery.
I never got far enough on the old layout to even think about the operations aspect of the railroad.
Greg was the only one that ever "highballed my locos - and his."
