Has some of the gray showing through slightly. Windows, shutter and man door are painted earth. Freight doors are primed waiting for the 2nd coat.

Tom ;D
Karl, what have you done here? It's a sweet looking build and wonderful to follow.
Hi Jerry, Tom & marty:
Thanks for the compliments. Got a little more done. Roof is on the front addition and the gravel roof is done on the main building.
Karl
Looks great.
Hi curt:
Thanks for the compliment. I have installed the roof trusses.
Karl
I really like the wood shingle roof. I need to have a building with that type of roof at some point! 8)
Hi Curt:
Thanks glad you like it.
Karl
Karl,
Made some good progress since I saw the model in person yesterday. ;D
Frank
Hi Frank:
Yeah it was great to spend a few hours with you. had a great time. The water tank dowel has its wood glued around it.
Karl
Hi Karl.....looking good! Back to incognito mode...
Looks good Karl. This is another favorite FSM kit of mine.
-Steve
Karl,
Love the gravel roof, you really nailed the look of the prototype.
Hi John, Steve & Jerry:
Thanks for the compliments. Been working on the water tank. Got a ways to go yet.
Karl
This is one of George's kits I unfortunately never caught up with.
Terrific job so far. I also like the gravel roof- did you apply whatever you used for the gravel with the 3M transfer tape?
Hi Mike:
Thanks for the compliment. Here's how I applied the roof
1) Thick black paint from the hardware store.
2) While still wet pour the dirt on. Shake off loose stuff and let it dry. I believe this is how George does it.
Karl
Nice job, Karl. Looking forward to the rest of it.
I have done few roofs that way. Don't use water based paint though or your roof will sag. And don't ask how do I know that 8).
Vilius
Thank fro the compliment. It's not water based paint. Water tank is finished. Found a nice cast plaster water tank roof in my stuff so I used that.
Here's a photo.
Karl
Beautiful job on the building.
Hi Curt:
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Fine workmanship as always Karl. I should buy this kit I've never built it.
I just don't know about that tank roof. Maybe it's the camera angle (or lens), or maybe it's just me - it seems a bit out of proportion to the tank itself.
--Rich
Hi Rich:
Thanks for the reply and compliment. I like the roof maybe its the way I took the photo. But then that's why there's chocolate & vanilla.
Karl
Excellent build Karl.
Hi MNark:
Thanks appreciate your compliment.
Karl
Hi All:
The main building is finished. All the roof details are on. Hmm what to do net. Possible the cast brick buiuling on the left side.

Karl
Hi Guys:
Got A little more done. Shades and curtains are installed. 2 curtains are flowing out of the windows. Also have a guy looking out one of the open windows.
Karl
Starting to really take shape Karl. I love how the addition of the tavern really adds to what you've already done. Makes George's design 'pop.' Always loved your workmanship.
--Rich
Very cool details.
Hi Rich:
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated. Roof is next. Both roofs are removable to add lighting later. Glad to have you aboard.
Karl
Hi Curt:

Karl
Hi guys:
Got some more done today. The tavern is glued to the base. The Cellar doors, News stand and shoe shine are installed.
Karl
Looks great Karl. I forgot to ask before how you did the blowing drapes?
Karl,
A wonderful build, AGAIN! Great stuff my friend.
Tom ;D
Hi Curt:
Thanks for the compliment. Blowing drapes are made from facial tissue. They are cut 7/8" Long X 1/8" wide. Glued at the top of the window. Pulled out & shaped then hit with thinned down white glue.
Karl
Hi Tom:
Thanks buddy. Glad you are enjoying the build.
Karl
Thanks for the info Karl.
Hi Curt:
You are quite welcome.
Karl
Really looks great Karl!
Hi Mark:

Karl,
Another great build !
Are you still using Floquil Dio-Sol as a thinner for your washes or have you moved unto something else ?
Reason asking lots of us still have Floquil paints but no more Floquil Dio-Sol...Do you know the best thing to use or to thin their paints down for airbrushing too ?
Tommy
Hi Ed:
The photo above is Stuffy's on the F&SM. Not the one I'm building. Maybe they are twins???
Karl
Hi Tom:
I use A&I for my washes and gray craft paint for dry-brushing.
Karl
Tommy: Try using laquer thinner to thin Floquil. It might work.
Lacquer Thinner is a good cleaner for Floquil. It's my recollection that the older Dio-Sol was a (proprietary) mixture of Xylene and other solvents. They changed the formula for Dio-Sol when Testors had to change Floquil to meet some safety concerns.
dave
Hi Dave:
Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Been working on the boiler hose for a few days now. Parts need some adjusting for a good fit. I see I missed a gap on the corner. I will fill that in. I had to adjust the roof by 3/32nds of an inch on the rear peak to make it level. Maybe I did something wrong not sure.
Here's a pic.
Karl
Karl-nice little build.
Hi Curt:
Thanks appreciate it.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Got the roof mostly done yesterday. Will finish it up today and take a photo. Then on to the coal shed and smoke stack.
Karl
Hi All:
The boiler house & coal shed are finished. I painted my boiler house roof red oxide. I was a house painter at one point and most of these roofs I painted were this color. The kit instructions are for a rusted weathered roof. I wanted my roof to look good. Next is the smoke stack for the boiler house.
Karl
I have a standing seam roof to be painted, and I've been mulling over either trying to get a "terne metal" or "zinc" look, or painting it. Most older metal roofs I've seen were painted red oxide.
dave
Looks awesome.
Hi Curt:
Thanks appreciate it.
Karl
Hi Dave:
Like I said I painted quite a few of them when I was A house painter. What is teme metal?
Karl
Karl
I'm always impressed that Karl's builds are so clean, tight and precise. No sloppy joints, no gaps. I'd like to pull up a chair and do a make - 'n' - take in his shop. 👍🏻
Karl, as usual, ..... Nice Job....
In the 1860's, the options for metal roofs were copper, lead, tin-coated iron, and terne-coated steel. Tin-coated malleable iron was disappearing at the time. Copper and terne rolled roofs were very popular during that vintage--terne more so because it was less expensive. Terne is an alloy of lead and tin that provides excellent corrosion protection for steel.
(http://www.hereandthere.org/oldhouse/terne-metal-roofs.html (http://www.hereandthere.org/oldhouse/terne-metal-roofs.html))
Basically, an early version of 'galvanized' from an appearance perspective.

(sometimes the forum software does strange formatting that I can't figure out how to remove...)
really nice work Karl,
everything looks so good- the coloring is great. Your postings are really appreciated, I love to see other peoples work!
Hi Dave:
WOW you really know your stuff. Thanks for the info and pics. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi Bob:
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
The front of the diorama is finished. All left to to do is the back with the track and its canopy. Shouldn't take top long. Not sure why thew chimney looks crooked. It looks straight on the model. Possibly camera angle.
Karl
Hi All:
Thought I'd take A nicer photo.
Karl
Karl,
Awesome job buddy!!!!
Frank
Terne looks a bit like pewter, if I remember correctly. The Model Masters "Jet Exhaust" would be a good starting point. http://www.art-paints.com/Paints/Acrylic/Testors/Model-Master/Jet-Exhaust/Jet-Exhaust.html That's an interesting color as a base or a weathering coat for non-shiny metals. Another good color (one that is acrylic based) is Vallejo "Burnt Metal" http://www.scalemodeladdict.com/SMF/index.php?topic=12668.0
