Title: Adhesive/Glue for attaching Painted Brass or White Metal to Wood
Post by: gfoyle01 on May 17, 2017, 05:35:45 PM
I have a kit (Rail Scale Miniatures Dome Oil) that requires attaching a long (approx. 8 in), very thin (.015 in) brass wire to a wooden trestle. The brass wire has been blackened & painted. I really can't figure out how to attach this and keep it neat. I probably can get the neatest fix with white glue and a needle syringe but I doubt that it would hold. Any thoughts & suggestions would be appreciated. It doesn't seem to me that CA could be easily controlled on such a long thin wire.  Maybe I just need practice.

Thanks

Roy,
What I would do is take a 1/4" piece of .008in wire or similar, flatten it out & fold it around the kit wire and drill a hole into the wood tie area that the wire would sit. Do this for several spaced out pilings and you can put a dab of glue on the part or the wire that goes into the tie and simply touch up paint or even rust weather to blend. Boom, no glue marks and it looks more prototypical.  My 2ยข worth.  Thanx Thom...

Here's a glue based solution:  Put a drop of Walthers Goo on a piece of glass or stone (something that's solvent-proof).  Mix in a bit of acetone to slightly thin the Goo.  Put a small amount of Goo on a couple spots of wood, then affix the wire.  The Goo will give you a bit of working time.  When everything is positioned, use thin CA glue over top of the Goo to lock everything in place.

I don't know how much wire surface you will have to put glue on, but I would bet a lot that Formula 560 Canopy Glue will hold it in place. Great for metal to wood and it will only take a little bit, and it will dry fast and absolutely clear. FOS sells it, and also available at hobby shops, usually in the airplane dept.

5 minute epoxy and a bit of black or grey paint and mix together. Let it stand for 4 minutes then take a small dab on the wire and attach to the wood. Hold adjust and let it cure for a couple hours and you are done.

I wonder how a thin or medium viscosity CA glue would work - with some kind of clear matte finish applied afterwards to kill the shine.
