Welcome aboard, Gerald.  FSM kits can be intimidating, but if you just follow George's excellent instructions, you'll do fine.

Welcome to the forum Gerald.  It's nice to see FSM kits being built as opposed to stashed away.  I've learned quite a bit from building FSM kits over the years.  The instructions are wonderful.  A few techniques may have changed over the years but many are still quite valid.

One example of a technique that may have changed: On an older kit such as this the instructions might mention making 'pitch' for around the chimneys by mixed a drop of Floquil Grimy Black into some 5 minute Epoxy, applying it and then painting it with a clear flat finish after it hardens.  It's far easier to mix a drop or two of acrylic paint (Model Master Grimy Black) with some Elmer's White Glue to make pitch.  Or use Gallery Glass Liquid Leading if you can find it.  The working time is longer then the epoxy method and it dries flat so you don't have to follow up with the flat finish.

I'm looking forward to following along with you adventure.   :D

Thanks for all the support guys. Looking back I misspoke in the first post. This is actually my third build, my first FSM. I have built a C. C. Crow and a Bar Mills. I am sure along the way I will have questions. Gonna make the two hour drive to the hobby shop this morning so it will be the afternoon before I get anything done. Thanks again for all the responses.

Welcome to the forum! I will be following along on you build and would also be happy to answer questions.  Just so you know,  George follows the builds of his kits here on the forum.  He doesn't post but he has Tommy's phone number and will make sure you get a message through the forum.  I'm just kidding Thom - he has my number along with a few other here, too. I'm looking forward to watching your build thread. And again, welcome.

Wish I had more to show you guys, truth is I painted windows til I was painted out! I did use my Tyrion model brush built by Lannister to apply antique white regular hobby paint. Gonna work on the station color tomorrow. Thanks for all the support guys.

Let me say thank you for all the support. After much deliberation and modeling with what I have on hand I have come up with this yellow color. I am wondering if it is close to what is intended and if I should try and change it. All criticism welcome. You can't hurt my feelings, as I don't have any.

Gerald, I will admit I'm not a fan of the color, but the real question is do you like it and how it goes with your layout to your eye?

Gerald, first let me welcome you to the forum and congratulations on your first build thread. On the F&SM, George's buildings are mostly earth tones but he has plenty of bright colored building mixed in, many painted yellow. Right now you think it might stick out like a clown in a crowd of business suits, but weathering will tone it down. If it helps, take some time going through John's FSM photo thread and look at some of George's buildings that are yellow and decide if you want to go with that color.

Gerald

If you decide to tone the yellow down you can an apply chalk.  The process is easy and I really like the results.  I'm currently using the process on two builds for my layout.  See the S&S RR build thread. Let me know if you have any questions.

John's powders advice is sound, and definitely use his FS&M thread to study George's work. Above all, even if you think it was a mistake, continue the build. Doug Foscale has a great blog and I was going back a couple of years re-reading them. One of the topics was on making mistakes. In short, he encouraged making them because there's no better learning experience. So, keep building, my friend.

Gerald:

What color does George call for in the kit. I believe it was Depot Buff. The closest color I have come to that is Tamiya Dark Yellow Spray paint. It is what I use as A replacement for Floquil Depot Buff. Its almost an exact match.

I think the color will look good when toned down a bit-  using some fine steel wool on the walls is a nice way to weather down colors and I do agree that chalk powders/ pastels do an amazing job of weathering walls-grays and browns are great colors to use on walls.  A little heavier chalk around the bottom of the building can replicate the dirtier siding that is close to the ground- its a subtle but effective technique for increasing realism.
Remember, every model that you build increases skills!
Here is a Youtube video that is really good- from Doug F.

Gerald,

Glad to have you on the forum. Even glader to see you building your first FSM kit. You'll have a blast regardless. I'm looking forward to your build. Keep the pictures coming because we love pictures.

I hadn't built any fancy craftsman kits when I built my first FSM and the instructions in the FSM kit were super wonderful and I ended up with a nice kit in the end. You're doing great.

Be sure to ask lots of questions here. Folks here love to give their opinion  ;D

Ok guys, I have a question. Does Mr. Sellios still sell parts to these old kits. I can't seem to find one of the larger doors to the main building. I am pretty sure I started with it but........well you all know the deal. I am sure this happens to everyone...... Right?

Pictures to come soon..

I can tell you that I (and Frank Bernard to hear George tell it) have been requesting George to cast some freight doors to no avail.  So you will probably not hear from George on that question. He gets emails and letters from folks all the time who have purchased a kit that has 'no' castings in it. He just does not answer them. You might, and it's a pretty big 'might,' help you out should you go all the way to Peabody for an open house.

The other possibility - purchase his molds and casting equipment. If you do Frank & I will be first in line!

Gerald, if you're looking for a cast replacement door, try here. They make some that are very close to FSM.

http://besttrains.com/products_4-0001.html      4-0349 to 4-0351

Their castings are very good quality.

Hi all,
I've been perusing along from time to time.  Very captivating.  Just a side note here with regards to FSM selling castings.  As some may know George always thought to be generous with lots of good quality castings.

George many years ago released extra castings sold separately for a few years off and on.  To no avail, the castings never took off.  George also used to offer at open houses for many years have big boxes filled with castings (what he called imperfect) to which the imperfections were so minor to the average modelers.  Again to no avail.  George use to have windows, doors, chimneys etc.  Customers mostly didn't give a hoot.

Now a days for the last several years I tried many times to get George to put out some more castings sold separately.  He said no due the high costs of metal for years.  So those days are over sadly enough.

Now that George is fully retired, I only think what a unfortunate void this hobby will have going forward.  I agree it would be convenient to simply order up or go out and buy parts to any past FSM kit.  Now back to reality,  Still I thank George for his progressing this hobby forward since John Allen's inspirations help guide the hobby's imagination explosion.

Can't wait for the next George Sellios to start progressing new hobby bars for the rest of us imaginative hungry modelers.  My 2ยข.  Thanx Thom...

I have a couple pictures of the weekend progress. Wall color finally chosen, windows in and I have the storage building started. Still haven't found the missing door but have a couple options thanks to you guys. As a last resort I may substitute with the freight door you can see in the picture.

I am not fast as some here but still having a great time with this build. Work tomorrow so not sure how much progress will transpire this week.

Gerald, yellow is the worst colour to get to look just right! (it depends what is right IMHO).

Yellow tends to be a saturated colour on a house wall if coated a couple of times. If the structure is to be older and weathered the yellow looks more like a stain with the grey weather wood peeking through. You could chalk it, however you may not get what you want.

You could use a dilute white paint and dry brush the tips of the boards to get a faded look.

Or you could just take some water on a brush hold the wall vertically upside down and lightly brush the wall from the top (actually the bottom) to the bottom (which is the top). This will dilute the yellow and cause it to puddle under the edges of the clapboard. Let it dry in that vertical position. When it dries you will have a concentration of yellow under the lip of the clapboard fading to the real bottom of the clapboard. Don't oversaturate the wall with the water just wet the yellow paint enough to allow it to flow.

Experiment, remember you can just re-paint.

Enjoy.

How about regular depot buff, with green, or dark brown trim? Than on the depot buff, just a light ink wash for weathering...
