Hello All,
So this is Mystery Scratch build installment #2. The last one went sooo quick, that my head almost spun around. Let see if I can stump the masses this time. Here is the main building pieces cut out.....I had not planned on building this, but I had some Aged Clapboard siding from North Eastern Scale, that I was dying to try....Anyways good luck, and let the Guessing begin.......

So, now that the build has ben guessed, here is the progress so far. I first stained the walls with the Folkart Driftwood pickling wash. Than I has a paint match done for Depot Buff, which I applied by wiping small amounts on with a cloth. I dry brushed with desert sand, and than a light ink wash. Hit some random boards with Maple stain. Also back to building more doors,,,, Still have to get rid of the Fuzzies,,, Thanks for taking a look...

your speed makes me look like a slacker! I really like the aged clapboard from North Eastern- I have used it for all my builds so far.  I so need to try making my own freight doors.

Our daughter-in-law is a hairdresser. Doubt your hair dryer is the typhoon model she uses. What wattage IS the dryer you use, please?

Very nice work Loren. The colors look great. I wonder if you use a hair dryer on wet paint if you will get the peeling paint look?

I had a little compact travel one laying around, that I bought years ago. I think it is a Conair. Has a folding handle. Has a high, and low speed, and a cool button. I am sure they still make it.

Thanks for the compliment. the hair dryer does not really effect the paint. What I have noticed, is that the grain in the wood comes right back, and in some cases gets more pronounced, by adding the heat. On the Crocker Bro build, I watched as the grain opened back up as I was drying it. I have now made this a practice, before I add any ink wash to deepen the grain.

Hey All,
I was in the process, of building the woodshop platform, for Schramm, and wanted to try something different. I have never tried coloring with chalks on wood, so this was new ground for me. In the photos you will see the following steps:

1) wood treated with Driftwood pickling stain, and charcoal gray, and medium brown chalk added.
2) A dirty gray chalk wash added to the wood.
3) A ink washed applied.
4) The boards sanded with 300 grit, to bring out the grain, and represent wear.
5) A very light brown leather dye wash added.

And the final product. I am pretty please with the results......

Those came out very nice, Loren.  I love "experimental model railroading" where people try things and document how they do (or do not!) work out.

Thanks for the comments. Dave, I am of the "lets throw it all in a pot, and see what it tastes like" group. The best way to get what you are looking for, is to copy, or try a blend of different things.

Morning All,
I finished up the basic woodworking shop yesterday. I still have to glue it all together. For all of you rivet counters out there, I screwed up, I got in my mind that 2x12 were used. It actually was 2x8. Oh! Well! it is what it is. I put in the roof supports, as I will not be making the roof removable, but adding lights to the woodshop. Thanks for taking a look...

So yesterday I went off on a tangent, to build details for the office. The photos do not do them justice, as they are extreme close ups. the wall phone was fun.....I also, as can be seen in the last photo, the office platform built as well. You can also see in that photo the small outside box on the wall.....thanks for taking a look...

Thanks for the comment....I have come to the realization that almost anything can be built in HO. If you did not see it, go back and look at "Got Bored II" in scratchbuilding. That was one of my best yet....If I send you something again, I will add it in....

I got some more details done. I thought the desk would look pretty bare with nothing on it, so this is what I came up with. The other pics are of the interior, with the old style ice box, and of the stove, that I finally got carved out of dowel after three different attempts. Thanks for taking a look...

        Great pics and great modeling!  One thing tho,  I noticed the paper on the desk has a couple words with misspellings.  Not a biggie, but if you're going to spend the time with all that beautiful detailing, you ought not distract us rivet counters with monumental distractions like that. :)

I got the last of the office details done. The coffee pot, and the office chair. The chair I am not overly happy with, and really am ashamed to put the pics up, but I am not going to re-build. I use Zap A Gap, and not sure if it is just a bad bottle, but it has been not so good at absorbing lately. Also might have to do with the wood stain I used on this wood as well. Thanks for taking a look...(do not forget to see the casters on the chair)

Hey All,
Been a little while since my last update, but I have been working on it. I pretty much finished up the Sawdust shed, just need to finish up the cyclone. The cyclone platform was almost like building a small kit in itself. George sure did make his kits full of detail....Thanks for taking a look...

Back again today. I got the cyclone finished up last night. The main cyclone is made from a piece of dowel, and the exhaust pipe is four separate pieces of brass tube. It was painted with steel gray, and flat metal tin colors, and than my real rust wash added to it. I just need to get the pipe in place once the Wood working shop is all put together. Actually had them done for awhile, been working on roofs.....the most time consuming part of any build, still have sticky fingers from the Campbell's shingles...will have an update tomorrow afternoon, with some new pics.

I have this kit. Initially I thought I would build it and scatter sections of it around my switching layout. Your build has me thinking I should scratch-build it. I started yesterday by staining the wood for the Woodworking Shop. I have a couple Bollinger-Edgerly cast doors but might use some Rusty Stumps doors instead.

I'm assuming the footings for the shop are the short ones from Bollinger-Edgerly. Yes, no, maybe so?

PS the  Craftsmart Barnwood stain is a great tip. I now have probably a lifetime supply  ;)

Glad to have been a deciding factor for you. The footings I actually cut from bass wood, with a template I made. I was going to spend a fortune for cast ones. This way it was $1.29.
As far as the doors....Come on build your own........make it a real scratch build (minus the windows, and etc...)

Hopefully this won't be too much of a disturbance to Loren's fine thread. I just want to show my construction of the shop doors.

I made my doors out of Northeastern Scale lumber - 1x8s and 1x6s. They're not as heavily grained as Loren's. I used Craftsmart Barnwood Stain, A&I, plus a light brushing of Testor's Driftwood wash.

Okay so this first pic is out of focus. It does illustrate the construction. 1x8s glued to 1x6s that are taped to the plan. Left section is complete and the right was yet to be finished.

As a side note I initially tried using a SS Ltd door handle. Not good. Went back to my olde standby - a bent up staple.

I have scratched together a number of things though usually I'm lazy about doors and windows.

I've started constructing the woodworking shop. I've flipped it left to right (now the open area is on the  right). But I've run out of 2x8. I placed an order with Northeastern and I should be able to pick it up on Monday. So I'll tag along with at least this structure.

Lucky you to be so close to Northeastern, I have to pay $10.99 each time....I had the same happen to me a couple weeks ago (2X8 as well), but local hobby shop owner will get me things from Walther's for no extra charge, so I went with two bags of Midwestern Pre cuts. I as of yet have attempted windows.. I guess that is the point to which I will not push myself completely to the NUT House....Keep on Building...

Yes Loren having NE within 30 minutes is very nice indeed. BTW I decided not to wait. I've got a surplus of 2x10 so I'm mixing it up.

Yes Bob they closed the store but you can order online. Once it's pulled you can drop by to pick it up. BTW my sister-in-law has a place in Conway. And I've done more of those summits then most.

awesome doors! can you post a photo "dead on" of the door drawing so i can use as a template?
    As an aside, I started getting my stripwood from Black Bear, they sell Mt Albert wood and even though its farther away, the shipping charge is less than North Eastern ( which is in the next state from me!)

Back again all. I finished up the interior for the wood working shop, and got the lights, and roof installed. Here are some shots of the interior, and one with the lights on. I used a light yellow chalk for most of the saw dust around. Thanks for taking a look....

This will be the shipping/receiving department of a large printer so the interior will be different. I flipped my version left-to-right so it fits properly in the spot I have in mind. And The building is 17" back from the layout edge so I'll probably build my roof right on these walls. Ain't no one reaching over the busy 'throat' to remove the roof.  ;D
