Decided to leave my comfort zone and try something different this morning. Here are the goods: good ol' inkahol; FolkArt's Driftwood Pickling Wash, that some of youse guys have turned us on to; Testor's Teak Acrylic Wash; craft paint (wanted Apple Barrel Barn Red but looks like Michael's stopped carrying Apple Barrel and I didn't want to drive 15 minutes to try Hobby Lobby).
First did my usual nailholes (don't go there) and lifted clapboards routine, then my usual inkahol wash.
Next I applied the pickling wash per instructions (brush on...wait 30 seconds, wipe off with rag).
Here I deviated from the instructions, not because I'm an artiste but because I'm lazy and have a million other to-do's today. The pickling is supposed to be given an hour to dry and 24 hours to cure. Yeah, right.
The acrylic wash needs to be stirred pretty thoroughly and then brushed on. Goes on super-thin. As you can see (depending on how the color reproduces via iPhone and posting) it goes on with a pinkish hue. This might be because I didn't let the pickling below fully cure. In fact, it foams a bit inside the window openings where it piles up during the brush-on.
Finally, on a piece of scrap, I dry-brushed the craft paint, Americana Deep Burgundy.
Off now with the dawgs to visit the grey folks, and then off to teeny-tiny Seward, IL for a 50th anniversary picnic for relatives. I'll report back with further progress. Cheers!
Cool. Looks like a variation of "Sellios' Usetabe Red". ;)

Dave,
Looking real good. I love the pickling wash. Did you put on an ink wash after the paint and all? I found that it deepens the color, and brings the grain out a little more.....
Loren..
Not yet, Loren. Good idea, though. Gonna let all this sit until this evening, then I'll play around some more. Thanks!

You got me on that one, John.
....the prototype structure and a beautiful model build by Bill Stinson of Vermont.....were the inspiration for this kit....Slim is working on a light kit for it also....
It's now a nice wedding venue. Lots of pix on their website. Great looking kit! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for sharing you experimentation's Dave. Interesting, very interesting. I'll have to keep an eye out for the Driftwood Pickling Wash and Testor's Acrylic Washes. The results you've achieved are quite impressive! ;)
I enjoy the process. Nicely done.

Back from our trip to northwestern Illinois. Took the back roads home to peek at all kinds of barns. Did a dry-brushing of the wall color. On the left is where I left things this morning and on the right is the wall color added.
And the end walls with the same treatment. I'm thinking maybe a final inkahol wash as Loren suggested. Thoughts?
Definitely a A&I wash. Also consider adding some paint under the eaves, where the sun wouldn't bleach it out. That's something I've seen on barns.
dave
Good idea, Dave. I've noticed that on real barns...thanks! 👍🏻
Added some more color under the eaves...enough? Hoping the inkahol will help it blend.
A lot of the barns here in northern Illinois also have these quilt decorations on them. Was thinking of adding one at each end. Properly faded/weathered, of course.

That looks good, let's see how the alcohol and ink blends things together.
Here's a nice well-weathered barn for inspiration.

Dave,
Nice modeling. I guess your visit to uncle George's has given you the inspirational modeling/weathering bug to the core. Keep doin, what you're doin. Thanx Thom...
Now, THAT's a weathered barn! Thom, I'm already planning a return trip next year. 👍🏻👍🏻
Slim has worked his magic.....
Dave, the barn is coming along nicely. The "barn quilts" are a nice touch. I don't think I'd go too heavy on the A&I, the boards have a nice faded look. The lights look nice, Groovy, but do I smell smoke? ;D
Jeff
Dave,
I agree with Jeff on the wash. Take normal strength and dilute 2 to 1.(meaning 1 part AI to 2 more parts A) I made a little batch awhile ago, and still have some left. This way you can always add more in spots to give some color variation.
Loren...
Dave,
Will follow along. Like your coloring on the barn ... 8)
Tommy
Thanks Jeff, Liren, Tom. Seamped with schoolwork last night but I did a very light inkahol wash. Pix and updates when I can steal a few minutes.
Dave, The barn in the Penn's Woods (Pa.?) picture offers some great weathering ideas. The roof seems to be in much better shape.

Bought 18 Testors washes @6.49 each at Michaels. Discount was 27 dollars. Over 20% off.
I like that.

Good deal... looking forward to your report. Back to mine tomorrow. 👍🏻
Very nice (and groovy)!
