Hi All:
Will be starting Schmidtchen's Firearms today.
Here's A photo of the kit.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Artie suggest starting simple with the rear shed so I am doing so.
Karl
Great!! I love that kit...couldn't find one. I'll be watching
John
Following along, but it'll probably be finished by the time I look in again ;)
Following, as always...
It's available on the Bar Mills website.
Geo2rge aka timbob60
yes, tsk been re-released, great kit. I enjoyed building it and I am sure you will too! One thing, ,,,on mine the resin walls were warped, I put them in the microwave for 10 seconds at a time to warm and soften them,,,then I placed them under a piece of wood with weight on it and left them there for a while. they flattened right out.
Hi Cuse, Janbouli, Dave K, Timbob And Bob C:
Thanks for following along. I have chosen my colors. Wall will be driftwood Stain and windows & doors will be some type of green. Frank B. suggested the green windows & doors.
Karl
I'll be along for the ride.
Hi Donato:
Welcome aboard.
Karl
I'll be watching along as well Karl.
Karl,
Will follow your Bar Mills journey....is this for you or a friend ?
Tommy
Hi Map:

The shed is finished. On to the main building.
Karl
Nice weathered shed Karl.
Hi Curt:
Thanks buddy.
Karl
Karl,
Thanks to Irma I'm late to the party but I'm here and watching now.
Tom ;D
Hi Tom:
Thanks for checking in. Hope you made it through Irma OK. Sent you A PM.
Karl
Karl,
Thanks for asking, I sent a PM in response.
Tom ;D
i Tom:
Got your PM. Glad you are OK.
Karl
Hi Karl
I have been traveling so I'm also late to the party. I will be watching with great interest.
Hi John:
Glad to have you along for the ride. Here's some progress. Got the main building walls painted CN Gray, Nail holes added, A&I and signs added.
Karl
Very nice work Karl.
Hi All:
I forgot. Just wanted to ask if my nail holes look ok.
Karl
Looking good Karl. Really like the color you chose.
Hi Mark:
Thanks for looking in.
Karl
Karl, I realize I should not answer a question with a question. Here goes anyway.
What is your opinion of the nail holes?
ed
Hi Ed:
I think they look fine. Just wanted another opinion.
Karl
They look good to me.
Karl, I think it was unfair of me to put the question back on you. So I will answer the question.
I know the topic of nail holes is to say the least a bit controversial. First, are we not speaking nail heads?
If there was just nail holes, would the building not fall down? If we are in agreement they are nail heads, with the head being larger than
the actually nail, I don't think the eye could see them. To me they stand out too much in HO. Even in O they can be over done.
But I am in the camp that believes less is more. If I have reached the point of my comments being asinine, I have gone there before and apologize.
Putting that aside, your modeling is damn good, and my opinion is of little importance. Nail holes and global warning, which is more important?
I will continue to follow, and enjoy your progress.
ed
I'm of the opinion that "hyper-realism" tends to make the modeling more "real". I don't think that we would see the wood grain in HO either, but adding grain to the wood makes the structure look so much better to the eye.
In my modeling, I only have to please myself- what looks good to me is what really matters. I like adding nail holes to my structures, but I make them fainter to see- they stand out more in a photo but you have to get up close to really see them when you are in my train room.
Your build is coming along nicely Karl! The roof was the hardest part when I built mine. This is such a great kit that Bar Mills put out.
Bob C. You make some great points. I think the grain is accepted because it covers the whole board, not just a TINY spot. Plus the nail heads are in a straight line making them more apparent.
The most important thing to me is, the kit builder gets joy from his or her efforts. How well it is done is secondary. To super detail some kits takes a year, even if you are retired. If you are doing that and building a layout, you run out of time, which may take away from the enjoyment.
I admire every ones efforts, and will always respect you.
ed
Looks great Karl, as always. I'd hate for you to pull out all those tiny nails-I say keep em. ;)
John
Hi John:
Thanks. I think I shall keep them. The nail holes that is.
Karl
And I shall avoid the subject.
ed
Hi Ed:
Sounds good.
Karl
I need to be nice to people from Pa.. Born in Reading. Which now is nothing to brag about.
ed
Hi Ed:
Haven't been to Reading in quite a number of years. So I can't make a comment about it so I will take your word for it. anyway its always good to hear from another Pa. guy.
I'm working on windows and door at this point and there are a lot of them. All are painted and weathered. Am adding glass and installing them into the walls.
Karl
Hi All:
Walls for main building are assembled as are all but the tall windows on the left wall. they are next.
Karl
Special K,
I like it! Makes me want to go out & buy a firearm or rifle. Do you think bullets will be available? ha. Thanx Thom...
Hey Thom:
If I could get you bullets I would. Thanks for the compliment.
Karl
Very nice Karl. I really like the top window.
Looking good Karl. I spent last week taking pictures of dozens of structures all with nails showing. I could tell when the structures were built by the round vs. square nail heads.
Karl
I will add some pictures of the nail heads as soon as I figure out why I can't load any pictures to the gallery. I started a thread to try to get some help.
Forgive me I can't help myself. Nail heads or nail holes? Heads I can dig, holes, building falls down.
Inquiring mind needs to know.
Now be nice.
ed
On the Sierra West forum there is a great thread dedicated to nail heads.
ed
You're fast Karl! Looking good!
Hi Ed:
Okay we shall call them nail heads then.
Karl
Hi Long Horn:
Thanks appreciate your comment.
Karl
Karl,
I see you are doing the usual Excellent Karl build. I love it! More pictures please.
Tom ;D
Hi Karl, I am in agreement. Today at my warehouses, I looked at hundreds of pallets and found all type of nails. Most a bit rusty, some indented a bit, some flush, some having no heads.
But none had fallen out leaving just the hole. (okay, point made). I also noticed they were not generally in a straight line. In HO you have no choice put to run them in a straight line. O. maybe off center a touch. F/G you could vary them a bit more. Last night while pondering this, since I model in O only, I thought I would see what size wire would duplicate a nail. If there was a wire small enough, you would still need the head. I believe I have gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. I have seen the exceptional modelers in the larger scales duplicate the nail and its head.
I am in full agreement, I have spent to much of your time on the subject. Not only Karl's but others.
I will say this, I sincerely admire everyone's skills. And I enjoy the forum immensely. So please don't kick my butt off.
With respect to all.
ed
And I do understand building pallets is not the same as structures.
Hi Ed:
Thanks for the reply. I also respect your views on this.
Karl
Hi Tom:
Thanks for the reply and compliment. Will be taking more pics as I go along.
Karl
Hi All:
All windoews are installed on main building and am working on the foundation.
Karl
Great looking building so far.
Hi Curt:
Thanks buddy appreciate your compliment.
Karl
Karl,
Looking good...
Loren...
one day....... I wanna be like you! Great Job!
Hi Loren & Gerald:
Thanks for the kine words.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Got the foundation done and attached to the upper walls of the main building. This took a few hours as fitting takes some time. Its not perfect but I guess it looks OK.
Karl
It looks great.
Looks fine to me Karl ;)
Karl,
Love it!
Tom ;D
Hi Curt, Pollux & Tom:
Thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
Decided to do a little dry-brushing on the walls. I used Craftsmart acrylic paint. The color is Bisque. It's an antique white color.
Looks good! Think about stippling some weathering powders on top of that, maybe dark brown, light bluish grey, even an olive green, to represent 'crystals' and other coloring in the rock. I've gotten some good results with that as a 'last step' in rock coloring.
dave
Karl, Gerald one day wants to be like you. However, I never want to be like you .... cause then I wouldn't be able to look up to you.
Hi Dave:
Thanks for the post. I'm not exactly sure how to do what you are saying. Maybe you could post a photo of a wall you did using these techniques with the powders here on my build. It would be much appreciated so I could see exactly what you are talking about as I've never done to many stone walls. Also tell me what powder colors you used on the wall if you post one here for me.
Thanks Much:
Karl
Hi Donato:
Thanks I really appreciate that compliment. However, I'm sure you are just as good as I am.
Karl
It is looking good Karl.
Hi Steve:
Thanks buddy appreciate it.

That's pretty good stuff right there.
Hi Gerald:
Yeah that is a more than pretty nice compliment. Believe me I do appreciate it.
Karl
Karl, looking good! I love the color on the clapboards.
Hal
Hi Hal:
Glad you like the colors. Been working on the main roof. Quite time consuming due to all the trimming around the shingles.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Well I finally got the roof shingled. time consuming job because of all the trimming. Now I have to assemble the roof, Paint it and assemble it and install it on the building.
Karl
Looking very nice Karl!
Hi Longhorn:
Thanks appreciate it.
Karl
Karl
That is some very fine modeling! I'm with Hal, love the color.
Karl, that is the kind of roof I hate building and you have made it look easy.
Hi John & Marty:
Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated. Finally got the main building finished. Here's a few photos.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Opps posted two of the same photo. here's the right one.

The pinnacle of modeling!!!
Great work Karl!
This is one of my favorite kits that I built- not the easiest to put together but well worth the effort. Its cool that it has been re-released for those who missed it the first time.
Hi John, Doanto & Bob:
Thanks for the complements. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All;
Got quite a bit of work done this week. This can be built as a 2 level or 1 level structure. I chose one level because there is lees contact with the stone wall castings which creates hard to deal with gaps. Here's a photo.
Karl
Awesome job Karl.
Hi Curt:
Thanks for the compliment. Appreciated as always. As I said I'm building this as a ground level building to show others a different approach to the model. Hope everyone likes it. Still have detail to attemd to.
Karl
Hi All:
Opps 2 of same photo. Here's the other.
Karl
Excellent.
Superb modeling as usual . Is it the photo or does the stone look a bit corse to you Karl?
Hi Jan:
Thanks for the compliment. That's the way the stone look. Some stone is rather coarse looking. I like the way it looks.
Karl
Great work Karl..... 8)
Hi Greg:
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Karl,
Beautiful build my friend. Just wonderful.
Tom ;D
Hi Tom:
Thanks buddy. Appreciate it.

Who knew frogs were so talented....!!
Hi Donato:
I knew that that's why I choose Froggy The Gremlin.
Karl
HI All:
Just finished up Schmidtchen's. Here's A Final photo
Thanks for watching.
Karl
Karl,
Extremely well done, again. Beautiful job all the way.
