Hello All........
I told Slim that I would be building this kit after the holidays, so I thought I'd get the requisite photos out of the way so I can get back to Xmas shopping for Pegi.
First up is the box.
Next is the kit contents.
Finally there is the instructions. Jimmy has them online and they need to be downloaded and printed. No objections here as he sold the kit at a very reasonable price.
See y'all after the holidays with the first photos of the build.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all !!!
I started this one in CB&Q colors...then the club decided they wanted Rock Island. Grrrrrrr....

Oh the Rock Island line is a mighty good road,
the Rock Island line is the road to ride........
Get your tickets at the station for the Rock Island Line.
Below are a couple of quick photos of one of my walls. I'll post better pictures in my lighting thread once I take them with the other camera and resize them all proper like.
The photo of the inside of the wall shows that the bracing has been cut down from the top of the wall to allow for a ceiling to be placed inside the structure. I might cut the bracing a wee bit more - about 1/32 or so to allow for the thickness of an LED lead. I'll cover all this in detail this weekend.
The other photo shows my colors. Not sure who's color scheme it is but I thought it would look ok.

After the holidays!!!
Is it gonna take you that long to find a present that makes Pegi happy? ??? ??? ???
Oh yeah... And it's Depot Station NOT Depot AND Station.
Jimmy probably took days and weeks thinking up that name - "Depot Station."
His next one in the series will probably be called "Food Restaurant" or something catchy like that. :P

Slim:
The colors look good, I'll be watching your build.
Hey Greg,
I'm glad to see that you're (that's the proper contraction of you and are - I haven't seen Candy over here, yet, but I better get it right from the get go) doing a build thread on this neat little kit. I'll be following along on your build and the lighting of the same with great interest.
I hope you got Pegi something nice for X-Mas. :)

Hey Bob:
Glad to see you over here. I already saw you intention to do a FOS build over here after the first of the year and I'll be following along.
I think this will be a nice little station and I look forward to the build, especially the lighting.
I really like the lighting you've done on your builds with Slim's products and give you fair warning that you will be "drafted" to tutor me with making that happen.
I did get Pegi a few things that will surprise her and a few that I hope will have a good "WOW" factor. It gets harder to come up with something spectacular each year, especially after 47 years!
Merry Christmas to you and Eileen, see you soon !!! :)

Be glad too. I'm planning on adding some photo's of the lighting as I add it to the FSM Brownsville Station I'm building for Tom. That thread, of course, if over on Kitforums. Hopefully I'll have some updates on that soon. After I finish a smaller structure I just added lights to as well. 8)

Thanks Bob, your help is greatly appreciated!
Gman,
Gregory was over at my humble abode this afternoon begging for an ice cold Diet Pepsi! He was out getting stocking stuffers for his lil' Pegi! Of course, he had to tell my Babe what he was doing and she then started in on me about no stocking stuffers the past several years. See how our friends can start a family misaspute and disunderstanding. Oh wait, I'm not on the PO PO Force anymore. I just lost my self for a minutes.
Tom :)

How about a big "boo hoo" for ole' Tom having to go Xmas shopping for the Babe..... ;)
BOO HOO
Hey "Tight Man"! The Christmas shopping was already done! However, I'll take the big ole BOO HOO for the stocking stuffers caper. Speaking of stuffers, well, never mind!

Hello and welcome again to the build of JimmyDs' Depot Station.
Since it was back at the beginning of this forum that I started this thread, I thought I would just start over.
This is a nice generic design that will fit in on most any layout and has the added advantage of being an easy build that will add a good bit of interest to a scene.
Below are the requisite photos of the box and contents.

Jimmy did not include instructions in the kit, instead they can be found on his website to be downloaded and printed as needed.

I like the kit as is, but like most of my builds, I just have to make a few changes or additions. I'll include these explanations as I go along.
Next time.....
Do I need to post the song lyrics again?
I began the build by installing the bracing the exterior walls, as recommended.
Exhibit #1 - (RK-DS-006)
Painted the interior side of the walls with a flat black paint and
Exhibit #2 - (RK-DS-007)
painted the exterior with Floquil G.W. Cream after cutting a few joints in the lap siding. As usual in lap siding, no nail holes.
Exhibit #3 - (RK-DS-008)
After letting the paint dry, I glued a side wall to a front wall, then a side wall to the rear wall.
Exhibit #4 - (RK-DS-018)

When these set up overnight, I glued the 2 pairs of wall together, along with the 3 walls for the telegraph operators area.

Hi Greg:
Looks great so far. From the looks of that kit you probably wouldn't even need the instruction to assemble it as it looks quite simple.
Karl
I guess I oughta kick myself in the behind and go back to finishing that lighting thread I started a while ago :P

Anyone have any suggestion for a source for gatorboard. I live in central VA. Thanks. Jim

Hi Jim.....I don't, but ReadingBob might have some info, I'll ask him about it on Saturday.
Sorry Jim, Central VA I can't help you with.
The first sheet I got I picked up at an art supply store (Sam Flaxx) down in Orlando. A 1/2" thick sheet that was maybe 4' by 4' was
very expensive but it really did go a long way since I was only using it to make up diorama bases for structures.
The stuff I'm using now I actually got for free. It was laminated with signs that were on display at a conference. When the conference was over I found out that they were going to throw most of the signs away so I hauled three large (roughly 3' x 8') signs out to my van and went on my merry way. ;D
Bob. Sounds like you really scored big time. Thanks for your info. The search for gatorboard is on. I remember there was a distributor with a display at the 2012,EXPO. Jim
I have a mail order source, Jim. I'll have to post it when I get home. Fast service...well-packed. It might be foamboardsource.com but I'll check. U-Line, which also carries Karl Tape, has it as well but I haven't used them. They claim same day delivery if the order's in by 6 pm
Just got home and checked and, yes, I got 5 sheets of 3/16" from foamboardsource.com. I also had a small leaflet in my file that one of our kit manufacturers included in an order calling our attention to gatorfoam.com. No experience with them. Shop around...the stuff can be pricey. Really nice to work with.
Jim....get up with Gator Dave (my cousin Dave Myers).....he has a web site www.gatorboards.net he is here with us in NC....if you need any info, get up with him....or just give me a call.....301-491-0797......and you can talk right to the source......
Jeff: Is the web address correct? It takes me to GoDaddy .
Dave, the website is http://www.gatorfoam.net/
The other Jeff :D
..opps....my bad....I think he has the best prices out there on the Gatorfoam product.....and once you use Gatorfoam, you will not want to use the foamcore product.....the dealer at EXPO was the one and only Gator Dave!!
Thanks Dave. Any recommendation on thickness for bases? Jim
Gator Dave just told me to post that when ordering Gatorfoam from him....tell him you know me and he will give you an additional 10% off.....actually, just tell him you're a forumite......
Jim...I normally use 1/2" for most of my "traveling" dioramas or displays...and I use the 3/16" for most of my removable bases for the layout etc.....
..and now I need addresses from Jim Mueller and the smart Jeff......
Thanks, Jeff (and Jeff!). Gonna need to place an order for my summer projects!
Jeff I think I sent my email via the forum but just in case jrmueller@embarqmail.com. Jim
Next up is the roof system for the depot.
Jimmy includes a sheet of shingles for the roof covering and I will be using them, but I need do some preliminary work before installing the shingles.
To begin, I had to add lines to the roof sheating so the shingle courses are nice and straight. The best way to do this is while they are flat on the drafting board and not attached to the roof trusses.
Exhibit #1 - (RK-DS-010)
I made some roof trusses so that the roof will be removable for lighting and interior details if I want to include them at some point in the future.
The roof "trusses" are made from some sheet stock in my stash. To do this, I traced the gable end from the side walls, cut it off and checked it for fit. After a little sanding, I traced this template and cut the remainder of the trusses
Exhibit #2 - (RK-DS-012)
and glued them in place.
Exhibit #3 - (RK-DS-013)
When they were good and dry, I painted the soffit to match the exterior walls.
Exhibit #4 - (RK-DS-014)
I want the structure to have a bit of a more finished look, so I decided to add a fascia to the eaves and gable ends.
I cut scale 2x8 material for the fascia, glued them to the eaves then the gables.
Exhibit #5 - (RK-DW-031)

That's all for now, see y'all next time.

Karl - will do.....
Now that the wall are up, it is time to install exterior door and windows. But like any construction projects, there are field changes that happen for one reason or another.
This one came from the suits at the main office and required the moving of the telegraph operators bay about 12' to the right. The only statement from the project superintendent was "It could have been worse, the interior finishes and mechanicals could have been completed which would require a lot more demolition".
The first photo shows the approximate position of the bay as it was intended on the plans.
Exhibit #1 - (RK-DK-022)
The next photo shows the position of the bay as requested by management.
Exhibit #2 - (RK-DS-023)
The shift involves moving a window and adding siding to close up the large opening. The window needs to be moved to the left, next to the door and the remainder of the existing opening will be filled in with lap siding to match.
An old piece of lap siding I scrounged up luckily is a perfect match for the kit siding.
Exhibit #3 - (RK-DS-024)
Cut the siding a little larger than the opening, then gently sand it to a snug fit. Also cut a backing piece a little larger than the siding piece for gluing the new siding flush with the existing siding.
Exhibit #4 - (RK-DS-027)
Check it for fit and glue in place
Exhibit #5 - (RK-DS-028)
Continued.....
Double check the fit for the window.
Exhibit #1 - (RK-DK-029)
A coat of paint and touch up sanding and the structure is ready for trim and windows and doors.
Exhibit #2 - (RK-DS-033)
Add the corner trim at the 4 outside corners trimming the top to match the slope of the roof.

Onto the windows and doors. Plastic was not provided for the windows in the kit, so I tried canopy glue for the windows.
This is my first effort with the glue method of doing windows after a clinic from Tom over a year ago, (I guess I don't like to rush into things) and I think it came out reasonably well for a first attempt. A few bubbles, but shouldn't be a problem.
Here is the front elevation
