Title: gas station project
Post by: ak-milw on March 22, 2014, 01:26:57 PM
I didn't see anywhere else to put this so I hope it is alright here. It is more of a kitbash rebuild.
I need a small gas station for the layout. I also have an old Campbells supply kit I built back in the 70's that is falling apart and needs help. ( I can never throw anything away). The supply house I want to use in the New Lisbon yard but it is to long. So to kill two birds with one stone I will cut off the office and use it for my gas station.
Here is the building

and here separated.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thewhistlepost.com%2Fforums%2Fgallery%2Fdata%2F500%2Fmedium%2FDSCF1328.JPG&hash=ef7a50582d4d7545221a818683dc0315372b5222)

I will put the larger section away for now and start on the gas station rebuild.

I proceeded to cut the base off and put it in my scrap bin. I cut off the roof and threw it away, it was cardboard. I then separated the wall sections, removed the old signs and the windows and door.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thewhistlepost.com%2Fforums%2Fgallery%2Fdata%2F500%2Fmedium%2FDSCF1331.JPG&hash=b60a5765c7b5e9e42a1cdece842515057ac9d3dc)

now to get these cleaned up.

I added the bracing, painted the inside black, reassembled and painted.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thewhistlepost.com%2Fforums%2Fgallery%2Fdata%2F500%2Fmedium%2FDSCF1335.JPG&hash=0b342b7b59b889071a0e5ddd223fd5fd31d306da)

this is the leftover piece for the ice cream stand build. I removed one window, added a door and made this shed for the gas station scene.

The station will have to overhangs, one up front over the pumps and one on the side. Started gluing in rafters.

Looking good - I noticed the granite layout table.  I managed to make one out of the sink cutout when we remodeled our kitchen.

John, this one is a machinists surface plate, I was a tool maker in a different lifetime.

I have the roof all shingled and painted, also added the side overhang.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thewhistlepost.com%2Fforums%2Fgallery%2Fdata%2F500%2Fmedium%2FDSCF1342.JPG&hash=0dae08176aa463f25810a8a9d68238bfb56f62d1)

I will add support posts when I mount it to the concrete base.

Well done! What's the green you used on the station?

Dave, it was Apple Barrel, English Ivy, acrylic craft paint.

I like all the craft type acrylic paints that I've tried - a ton of color selections, easy to thin,
easy to mix colors, and a big plus - they're CHEAP!

Yehh, you knew I'd jump on that point!

I've got a lot of other higher priced acrylic and solvent-based paints, but these tend to be my
first grab for the reasons mentioned above!
If I had to pick a second choice, I think it would be Dr. Ben's!

I mainly use the Apple Barrel brand, they seem to work the best for me. I have tried the Folk Art brand but they are a little to thick and need to be thinned down all the time
