Hey all,
Here is the next scratch build I am going to tackle. The old #11 blade was busy last couple days, as you can see for the majority of the walls are cut out.
I still need a little more B&B for the conveyor shed. The peeling paint effect, I wanted to try something new. I am not sure if I read this someplace, or it just popped into my head. I was standing in Michaels, and I was thinking, "what will paint not stick well to?" WAX was the answer I got. I painted on the trusty driftwood pickling wash, than a thin coat of clear wax. on top of that goes the Skyline blue. Once this has dried for awhile, I take the euro scratch tool, and lightly scrape off paint here, and there. I than hit it with a grimy black wash, and dry brush ever so lightly with a lighter skyline shade. Excuse the crappy lighting again for the photos. One day I will get it right....
On a side note, the kit that I have, seems to be missing some castings, I think. If anyone out there has the Tannery on a shelf, and can check to see that there should be three of the standard freight doors as pictured, that would be great. If anyone has two of these in their spares box, I would certainly pay for them, so that I can make the kit complete. Thanks for taking a look...
Loren...
I'm following. That's a great shade and I really like the weathering.
Thankfully even FSM hasn't figured out how to package 'authentic smells' into a tannery kit!!!
Don't forget to earmark a couple of your railroad's worst cars for hide service, possibly the worst cargo a steam era RR could haul.
dave
Tannery smells. WOW. That's a scratch and sniff that I will pass on.
How do you scale down smells???
1/87th of bad is still bad !!!
See ya
Bob
Interesting structure Loren.....I'll be looking in. :)
A few years back I spent a couple hours photographing the castings from all my FSM kits. Here's what I found in my Tannery box.
No smell in my yellow box!
Yes, I took closeup pictures if you can't see what you need by zooming this picture.
George took this model off the F&SM - it was on the North River. I asked him about it because it's one of my favorites. He told me that he tried to move it and destroyed it in the process. So much for the prototype.
Curt, Good to have you aboard..
Loren...
Greg,
Thanks for following along...
Loren...
John,
Thanks so much for the photo. I will study it, but it does look like what I thought.

Timbob,
Thanks, that was going to be an option....
Loren...
Following along , expect another great build.
Looking good so far Loren. I'll be tagging along as well.
Hi Loren:
Is the photo of the door above the one's you need? If so I may have them. Not sure. BEST trains may also have them.
Karl.
.
Loren
I like the color. Most of the builds I have seen of this kit turn out way too, blue - for my taste. I will be following along.
Janbouli, Mark, Karl, and John,
Great to have you all following along....
Loren....
So, The door casting mystery unfortunately gets worse. In the kit, is a very large double door casting (see Johns photo). This, along with one of the standard freight doors is missing.
Does anyone know, if George used this in any other kit? I have 40 others sitting around. I checked Wilfred B, but no such luck. It would be just my luck the only door George did as a one off, would be this.
Hopefully John has a close up shot of this, as I can try to build from scratch, and mold for the kit. I really do not want to purchase another kit for just a door casting.....Any help anyone can offer is greatly appreciated....
Loren...
Loren
Will this shot work for you? If not let me know and I will pull the box off the shelf and take one straight on.
When I took these pictures I was worried about the door and window castings because I usually use them in the kit. I took the pictures to help decide which detail castings might get used somewhere else on my layout.
John,
Thanks...does not get much better than that.
Loren...
I thought I had a match from Rollin Sawyer, which is close.
If anyone out there possibly has this casting in their spares box for some reason, please contact me.
It looks like George only used this one for this kit. I pulled some of the other kits from around this time frame, but nothing.
The search will continue.......
Have you contacted George directly? He may have one in his "spare box" of parts.
Loren:
Post A photo of exactly what you need and I will check my doors.
Thanks Karl
Mark,
I did not contact George. I have met him once, and I am not one to be a bother to someone....
Loren...
Karl,
The photo that John S (S&S RR) posted is the missing one.
Thanks
Loren...
So here I am back, licking my wounds from the Tannery debacle. Kind of like finding out Santa's not real. And before any of you jokers out there, who are over 50 come back with a reply of surprise......The Easter bunny does not exist either.....
Thanks to all who have offered their assistance with the matter....
I decided to do a step by step for the process I use for making the freight doors.
1) First is the 1/64 birch base.
2) Than the back planks are glued down. 2x4
3) I add the outer front boards. 1x4, and 1x6
4) The inner cross pieces are added. 1x4
5) finally the rest of details added. 1x2, and handles and such.
the last photo is of a completed, and weathered door...
Thanks for taking a look...
Loren...
Loren,
You are def. the King of Doors! Thanks for the short little photo tutorial--- "Castings?.... You don't need no stinking castings!" ha ha!
Wow Loren, incredible job on the doors.
Bob C, and Curt,
Thanks for the compliments....

Great job on the door Loren!
Coming along beautifully Loren. Those door details are amazing!
John
Great job on scratchbuilding the doors.
Frank
Loren
Those are some mighty fine looking doors.
Hey Loren:
Those doors look just beautiful. They look better than the castings.
Karl
Mark, John M, Frank, John S, and Karl,
Thanks all for the compliments....Sadly, I am going to be off my game for a little bit. A slip of the X-acto knife sent me to the ER yesterday, for some stitches. A little hard to model with out that extra thumb. I am going to be doing limited stuff....be back soon....

John,
Thanks so much....9 days until stitches can come out....

Hi Loren:
Sorry to hear about this mishap. I know what you mean I've slipped many times. Just been very lucky so far. Get Well Soon and back to modeling.
Karl
Karl,
Thanks. This one I could not put a band aid on. Knew that the second I realized what had just happened...
Loren...
Howdy All,
For the most part the walls had been finished prior to my accident. I did a little to finish them up. I also had the small supply shed pretty much done. The molds I made copies of for the stone walls on the bottom of the building. Not sure if I am going to use resin, or try hydrocal for these. And of course the last picture shows what you get, when you are not careful with a sharp object.
You can see the offending object just below....Thanks for taking a look....
Loren...
Ouch! I have a leather glove at the workbench for this reason. :) Nice work so far on the structure.

Very nice work Loren. I have cut myself pretty good with the exacto knife before but nothing like that. I hope it heals quickly.
Curt,
Thanks for the compliment, and it is on the mend already...
Loren...
Yikes! That cut sure looks like it meant business on your thumb! Great progress Loren on the build. Hope you're back in action soon.
Loren,
I bet you didn't feel anything until after the cut was complete. Yea, right, OUCH!
I have a #11 cut on the pad of my right thumb. I carry it with pride.
Welcome to the #11 Club.
Tom 8)
Been there, Done that! 3 stiches in my right thumb. I feel (or felt) your pain!
I have a #11 scar on the thumb and nail of my right hand.

Maybe Jimmy can make us some T-Shirts!
I belong to the club as well, however it wasn't my hand. I was cutting some material and was getting a bit over enthusiastic and slipped off the table and plunged the #11 blade into my thigh. Man that ##!!%&&!!! Luckily a Band-Aid stopped the bleeding....my pants weren't as lucky. Dan, I think you're right...Jimmy needs to make up some t-shirts for us!

Hi Loren:
I scratch built the small blue building you are working on some years ago. I can post a photo if you like. Hope that thumb heals up quickly.
Karl
Karl,
Your work is always welcomed to be posted on my thread...and thank you she's healing slowly...
Loren...
The #11 Club shirts would be great. cut yourself post a pic, and you can purchase a t-shirt. Or, maybe just the purchase part would work better....
Hey All,
Just a couple quick pics today. I managed to get the stone walls cast, and for the most part painted. I used a base coat of concrete, than with a sponge, did spotting of various shades of gray, browns, that had been thinned. Finished up with ink wash on the crevices, and on top. Lastly, gave a dry brush of bleached sand. Thanks for taking a look...

Would this be limited to knife cuts? I have a nice scar on my palm where I tried to drill a 1/4" hole in my hand.

Hi Loren:
here are the photos of the small blue building you gave me permission to post. I believe I built theses from photos of the F&sm RR as I never owned this kit. Hope you like em.
karl
Karl,
As always, fantastic work....thanks for sharing those pics....

so here is a real quick and dirty #11 club logo

Yep, sure is. I cut a slice on my index finger once, just put some tape over it after I cleaned it, and it healed up without a scar. But I still have a small bit of grey plastic in there. I can see it though my skin. I quite the #11 club after that. No regrets. :)
Did you get a response regarding the door castings....photo shows what is in my box of casting
Seabee,
Thanks for the pic. I had received a pic from another member and figured it out. Seeing as how I now have an incomplete kit, let me know if you ever want to sell yours.
Loren...
Happy Holidays All,
I will have a new post up in a couple of days, I have been working on the Tannery, getting little things put together, not really photo worthy. In the mean time, Santa was real good this past week, to bring me these two items for the collection. Thanks to Artie for getting the Tribute kit out in time for Xmas.......the kit is Amazing......
Loren..
I have never heard of the F&SM Tribute Kit. Is that a commercially available product?

Howdy All,
Just a small update today. The cold weather, along with the prior injury slowed me down, but I am getting back up to speed. Yesterday I worked on replicating some of the pipe castings, and I have been working on the windows, and wall details. Still have some more to do on the details, and weathering. Thanks for taking a look...
Loren...
Loren
It's good to see you back in action.
John,
Thanks.....by the way, the station kit #235 was good except for one missing coal shovel on your end, and you have an extra roof bracket.

Loren...
For those that are wondering - Loren and I are comparing the casting inventory from some of the FSM kits we bought off from eBay. We just discovered that I was missing 9 machine tool casting from my G. Wiliker's kit. Loren was missing some castings from his Tannery kit. I have never had anything missing from the kits I bought directly from George.
John, That is because George was not a thief.
ed
Nice Loren. I really like the wall color.
John
John,
Thanks...it was difficult to find a blue that was not overpowering. I really never cared for the blue, but I wanted to be true to Georges build.
Loren...
I finally seem to have made some progress. I managed to get the main building walls put together. I still have weathering to do, and the roof, and some details. I also got the dye tanks together for the most part, just need to weather the roof, and put some weathering around the interior. Thanks for taking a look...
Loren...
Very nice modeling Loren. Are those individual bands you put on the tanks?
Curt,
Thanks for the compliment. The bands are good old brown thread, with some rust applied...I could have done the bands a little better (guess I am getting lazy).

The walls come with the kit. These are cast copies of the originals.
Loren...
Howdy all,
I went off on a tangent the other day. I finished the platform for the conveyor shed, and it would just look empty without the hoist. I made this copy from wood, and plastic. Please excuse the double sided tape holding it down for now. Also, you will see the latest addition to my craftsman kit collection.....thanks for taking a look...

Hey All,
Been a while since I have posted, but I have been making progress on the roof and such. I should have some close to final pics in a couple of days. Mean while, here are three beauties that I picked up over the past couple of weeks. The Tap & Die, was in the first 100-150 kits, as Bob V gave me the story on the price change. I will be back in a couple days....
Loren...
Nice progress Loren.....great score on the new kits. 8)
Hey Loren:
Looking great so far.
Karl
Greg, Karl,
Thanks for the compliments...
Loren...
Well! these are not the final photos, but I made some good progress. George really put a lot of detail on this roof. I still have to weather the roof, and finish the pipes from the pump house, and add the front canopy (which is built). I could not fit all the pieces into the pics, but for the final ones they will be present.
I am going to put this build on hold for just a little while, as I have another project I have started on, that I need to get done for a member here. Thanks for taking a look, hopefully I can finish this up within the next couple months.....
Loren...
Excellent modeling Loren. The color is perfect also.
Beautiful. Your tar around the roof vents is nice and "trim." Not three scale feed wide like mine are. My recollection is that I used toothpicks to apply a mixture of white glue and Polly S Grimy Black it but they still came out very fat and blobby. What is your technique?
Vince

Vince,
Thanks for the compliment, I use a .008 wire dipped in the mix. These actually came out thicker than normal, as I wanted a darker mix, so I added some black paint to the grimy, but did not want to thin with water......
