Title: Railroad Kits Drugstore
Post by: SteveCuster on March 29, 2018, 10:47:59 PM
Hello everyone,

This weekend I started The Drugstore from RailroadKits. I purchased this kit and the firehouse at the 2016 Expo.

First step I removed and examined all the pieces. I was very impressed with how crisp and clean these castings are. Super high quality castings. I needed to do very little clean up to make everything fit.

After I mocked everything up I glued the walls together with epoxy.

My seams at the 45 degree walls were very tight but I still filled them in with some hydrocal. I carved the brick pattern back in a little on the corner.

I sprayed the walls with Krylon orange colored automotive primer.

I rubbed Apple Barrel Khaki paint on the bricks to represent mortar.

I colored the trim Americana Neutral Gray. I didn't removed the plaster behind the windows I just painted it black.

I painted the sills Apple Barrel Granite Gray.

I installed the windows. They were also painted Neutral Gray. The kit came with signs and I also used a few from other kits and things I've collected. I have a color copier in my workshop and I always make copies of any signage that comes with any kits I put together. The walls were also weathered with A&I

I added this sign to the backside. I sanded it as thin as I could get it and applied some white glue to the back. It didn't show the brick texture very well at first but it started to come through once it dried. I drybrushed it with a Burnt Umber color. I wanted to tone down the mortar so I dusted the wall with Rembrandt Raw Umber 408.3 chalk, it's my favorite color for general weathering.

I only have a few more things to add to it and I'm finished. A few roof details and the sign out front.

This is a very cool easy to assemble kit. I'm only a few hours into the kit and it's been very enjoyable so far.

The hydrocal does leave a bit more mess on my workbench when working with the raw castings.

Thanks for checking in. Sorry I didn't take more photos of some of the in between stages.

-Steve

Looks great ,  bricks and mortar , great colors . Do you like how the windows turned out just leaving the insert and painting it black?

Thanks Lynn.

Thanks Jan. This is the first time I've painted behind the windows instead of cutting the openings out. It's not noticeable at all even up close. I just can't light up the interior.

Steve,

The time you spent filling and carving the joints was well spent.  Wonderful build, I especially like how the weathering blends everything together, brick, mortar, windows, signs, etc.  Thanks for sharing the photos with us.

Very nice looking build.  The sign turned out great - amazing what a little chalk can do.
