Hi All:
Here's my next project. The Franklin Watchworks.
Karl
Oh yeah -- That's what I'm talking about! I have this kit, too (unbuilt). Will be on the edge of my seat with popcorn in lap.
Looking forward to it, Karl.
Vince
Count me in too..... :)
This is one of the better F&SM designs, I think. It's not over-compressed, the various rooflines seem to have a logical purpose. It'll be fun to watch.

I've got this one in my closet as well so I'm going to pull up a chair next to Vince, swipe some of his popcorn, and enjoy the show too. :D
Following along as always Karl.
Tuned in...

Do you have room for one more?
Only if you bring some pretzels & beer!! :)
Jerry
I'm in ... one of my favorite ones along with G. Willikers
Is it done yet??
I'll be watching as well. I also have this one stashed away.
Hi Jerry, Cut, Jim, Vince, Greg, Dave, Bob, Janbouli, Dave K., John S., Ken, Darryl And mark:
Wow This is quite the crowd. Glad to have all of you aboard. I will try to do my best with this guy. We shall see what you guys have to say. Thanks for checking in.
Karl
Hi All:
Main building walls are painted, Weathered and assembled. Our sign was kinda becoming unreadable so we had the sign painter come over and redo it so the customer's could read it. I'll leave it up to you guys. Do think it should be weathered or leave it as is?
Karl
Looks great so far.
looks great Karl! I am always partial to weathered signs....
Great coloring and weathering. Regarding the sign, feels like a little weathering might look good surrounded by those nicely-weathered walls. But then I always love weathered FSM stuff.
One question -- maybe just my eyes or an optical illusion, but are any of those double-hung windows above the doors on the long wall upside-down? Looks a little like the lower sash is out further than the upper sash.
Hi Vince:
OK I will do some dry-brushing on the sign to tone it down a bit. No those are 6 Over 4 windows. The sills are on the bottom.
Karl
Karl,
Wonderful build, love the colors and weathering. Just more to add to the KS file. 8) 8)
Tom ;D
Hi Tom:
Thanks again as always much appreciated.
Karl
Watch out!!! photo bombing you!!!
Looking great, Karl.
I'm for weathering the sign too.
Cheers, Mark.
Looking good! I agree about the sign - a wee bit of weathering is in order. FSM and fresh paint just doesn't work for me. But it's your build and I only have 2 cents to give. ;) ;D
Hey Jim:
thanks for the pics. Talk to ya soon.
Karl
Hi Mark & John:
Thanks guys. Will be weathering the sign a bit.
Karl

Jim - those cardboard boxes in the third pic are excellent. How do you make those?
(or were they part of the kit?)
Jim - I absolutely love the finish you achieved on the roof panels. :D Oh, yeah, the rest looks pretty darn great too! ;D
boxes may have been with kit, send me a message with your email, I made similar ones for our kits I can send you...they are paper painted with Floquil foundation
Roof is the real copper roofs from CC Crow(BIS)..with "patina it" (or something like that from AC moore) applied to make them green

Hi All:
Finished one peaked end with shingles. Also weather the sign slightly. I dry-brushed the shingle a little more.
Karl
Karl,
I liked the first set of wall photos but the ones above are most excellent.
Tom ;D
Hi Tom:
They are the same walls. The only difference is I slightly weathered the sign and added the peaked shingled emds.
Karl
Karl
The weathering looks great.
Karl the sign is perfect. Old but not ancient!!
Roof is looking good.

Karl
Yep - that weathering did the trick.
Great Karl , now the sign looks in line with the walls.
Hi John, Jerry, Vince And Janbouli:
Thanks for looking in and relaying your comments and compliments. Working on the other peaked end today.
Karl.
OK Guys:
Need an opinion here. Which one you like best. Let me know OK. Don't worry about the black spot. A casting goes there and it made the mark.
Karl
I like the one without the trim.
I like the one with the trim.
Karl
Looks great and as a twenty five year sider there would definitely be a frieze board installed. So its cool and prototypical.
Dick
Hi Jan, Curt, Dave And Dick:
Looks like the one with the Frieze board according to Dave wins. Thanks for the input guys. Much appreciated.
Karl
Good choice by your followers I agree.
Jerry
Hey Jerry:
Thanks appreciate it.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Added A casting and rust streaks according to the color photo.
Karl
The rust stains from the attic louver is a bit unintuitive. I wouldn't have thought that was a iron/steel item.
dave
Hi Dave:
Was just following the instructions and photos. Don't know if I could remove the pastel powder or not.
Karl
I'm sure there were (galvanized?) iron/steel louver panels, so I'd leave it and poke any (other) nitpickers in the eye ;D
dave
Hi Dave:
To late I removed the rust. Unless you think I should put it back. Let me know OK.
Karl
I suspect it'll look better/more typical without the rust under the louvers. (Implying, of course, the louvers are wood, which I think is more likely.)
But of course Rule 1 applies!
dave
Hi Dave:
You are correct they are scribed siding. I'll take a pic this afternoon.
Karl
maybe if the louvers were rust colored?
That's a good catch (on a beautiful build)...perhaps instead of rust, rain streaks (whitish, more subtle) showing the flow lines from rain and melting snow over the years.
Karl,
Looking good !
Will have to catch up and check in on this build...
Tommy
Hi Bob, Cuse & Tommy:
Thanks for checking in and giving you suggestions. Much appreciated.
Karl
Interesting discussion on the rust stains. I thought I would throw in my 2 cents for what it's worth. I have spent years taking pictures of run down buildings that haven't seen a coat of new paint in years. My wife calls them "George Buildings". Since I'm modeling the late 1940's this type of building is very prototypical since the US had just gone through a depression and then a World War. Most of the buildings in the country had gone without paint for 20 - 30 years. So as for the rust stains - the rust would have come from the nails that hold it together and to the building if it was wood. If it was galvanized metal, white rust from the zinc in the Galvanizing would come first "John's rain streaks". It is a sacrificial metal. Then the rust from the iron underneath would start. It all depends on the timing of the decay that your modeling. Now, as for the nail holes/nail heads. ;) Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Karl your build looks great.
Karl your doing a fine job with or without the rust stains.
Jerry
Karl,
I'm a bit rusty on my rust stain ideas! The build is looking wonderful. Very well done.
Tom ;D
Hi Tom:
Thanks buddy appreciate your compliment.
Karl
Hi All:
Got some more work done on the main building. Walls are assembled, details have been added vents and lamp shade. Also decided to put a frame around the sign to dress it up. corrugated main roof is finished with a few details added. More to go yet.
wall looks better w/o the rust from the louver.
Karl
Very nice modeling Karl.
Hi Curt:
Thanks appreciate the compliment.
Karl
Hi All:
Just finished installing the elevator on the roof of the main building.
Karl
It looks great Karl.
Very nice indeed. Great weathering as always.
Jerry
Hey John, & Jerry:
hey guys thanks for the compliment.
Karl
Hi All:
made A little progress today. Got the cyclone and it's pipes installed on the rood.
Karl
Great job Karl.
Hi Guys:
Got A little more done. Small platform and roof and also added the concrete steps. Used cap shingle on roof instead of folded paper.
Karl
Hi All:
Got A little more done today. Added the stairs to the small platform. Also added castings and figures.
Karl
Looks great. The weathering is consistent and subtle!
dave
Hi Dave:
Thanks much appreciated.
Karl
More nice work from Karl. I really enjoy watching your builds Karl.
Hi Steve:
Thanks appreciate your comment as always.
Karl
Nice additions.
Karl,
The walls look great. I haven't opened my kit, yet. Are you following George's basic painting/weathering instructions or are you doing something on your own?
Hi Curt:
Thanks appreciate the compliment.
Karl
Hi Vince:
I'm pretty much following the instructions. Thanks for the compliment.
Karl
Hi All:
Exterior stair have been built and added to the structure. Here's A photo.
Karl
Another great build my friend. It is really coming together.
Hi John:
Thanks glad you are enjoying.
Karl
Another great one for the Karl Hall of Fame! Thumbs up!
John
Excellent Karl
Hi John & Curt:
Thanks much for the compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
Got a little more done. The main building is finished and added to the base. Just have to weather the canipy roof.
Karl
Really nice modeling Karl- I noticed that you hipped that little roof overhang with individual shingles- its extra work but it comes out so much nicer than running a strip of paper down the edge. I like the rusty roof coloring, great job there. Thanks for posting!
Hi Bob C.
Thanks for the compliment. Yeah I put cap shingles on all my shingled roofs. Don't like the folded paper.
Karl
Hi All:
Been working on the walls for building B. Hope to get glass and shadeds in wondows and possibly start assemble the walls.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Got A little work done today. Building B's walls are assembled. Widows & doors are installed as is the sign.
Karl
Wow, Karl, that's really flying together. Looks great.
Hi Vince:
Thanks buddy appreciate your comment as always.
Karl S.
Hi Guys:
Got building B Almost done. Cornice has been and and the gravel roof has been added. Got some work to do on the back and add the roof details.
Karl
Another great one! I know I'm a broken record but fantastic color choices and finishes.
John
Hi John:
nah your not a broken record. Thanks for the compliment.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Got more done today. The Detailing on Building B is Finished.
Here's a Photo.
Karl
Great modeling as usual Karl, I always love your colors , but aren't you afraid it's a little too much green. Just curious , not meant as criticism.
Hi Jan:
Just following the painting instructions that George gave in the kit. Here's another photo.

Karl
What I meant is that almost all your buildings are greens, is that because of the instructions. Again not meant as criticism, quite the contrary, I love those colors .
Karl,
Amazing work, you never cease to stop amazing me either. Beautiful structures and great thread.
Tom ;D
Karl,
Spectacular as always ! ! been wanting to scratch build this for a while now and you may have pushed it to the head of the class ...lol
Great work! An old timer told me once that buildings were usually painted in one color to save money, that mono chromatic was typical
Hi Jan:
yeah I usually use George's color schemes. Sometimes I use others like Depot Buff with Zinc Chromate. and others. Thanks for the comment.
Karl
Hi Tom, Ken & Tom:
thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
elevated office is finished except for the roof. Will get on that tomorrow. Here's a couple of photos. Went with Karl O's wood siding instead of shingles.
Karl
Yes, great choice on the wood siding. Really fits in nicely with the rest of the structure. Love the build - thanks.
Karl,
(special k) what a fantastic job so far. You are the type of modeler George always wanted to sell his kits too! (one who actually builds his kits) ha. Love this build. Thanx Thom...
Another great build Karl! Karl O has a lot of good ideas. ;)
Hey Vince, Tom & John S.
Thanks for the compliments much appreciated as always. Both building are finished and glued in place. On to the scenery and details. Here's 2 new pics.
Karl
Great work Karl.....looking forward to seeing what you do with the scenery. 8)
Beautiful looking building complex. The large clock is a great detail piece.
Hi Greg & curt:
Thanks for checking in guys. Much appreciated. Always glad to hear from you guys.
Karl
Nice looking buildings Karl.
Hi Steve:
Thanks appreciate it. Started the scenery today. Parking lot is in as is the track and some of the scenery around each.
Karl
Karl, are those building loose or did you glue them down to the wood base? I'm still trying to figure out my long-term strategy for buildings. Dioramas are great work construction but seems like that will lead to complications when siting them on the layout.
Hi Vince:
Yes they are glued down. I'm not sure if you would have complications adding them to the layout or not.
Karl
Hi All:
The rear of the model is finished. I added the Bar Mills 57 foot brick stack. Not included with the kit. The scenery in the rear is finished.
Karl
The stack is sure the finishing touch, looks great with the structure.
Hi Jan:
Thanks buddy glad you liked the stack.
Karl
Karl,
Great job on the kit and diorama. Glad you added the stack as we discussed.
Frank
Hi Frank:
yeah thanks I think it's coming out pretty well. I like the stack also.
Karl
Lordy, Karl, you do some fine work.
Hi Dave:
Thanks for the great compliment. Much appreciated.
