Today the SBG, Saturday Butty Group, traveled all the way to Davenport, Fl. to visit Tom Wilson and his P&WVRR.
Davenport is just south of WDW(Mouse Factory) and about 45 minutes south of Orlando!
Tom was very gracious as well as being a perfect host for the SBG's. I took a whole bunch of pictures and when I uploaded them I didn't realize I had actually taken 128 pictures. I'll start you off with a few and I do have Tom's permission to post them here for everyone's enjoyment. Tom is now a forum member so he will comment when necessary, explain something or answer any questions.
Tom also got us all out of our comfort zone and had each one of us participate in some sort of operations on the layout. Trust me when I said we all took baby steps, okay, then baby crawls. But we did it! Tom was very patient with us. When it was over after a few hours we all went to Beef O'Grady's for some good grub and great fellowship! Great job Tommy, I call him Tommy most of the time. Your layout is fantastic!
Tom gave me an Employee Timetable. The time table includes the Basic Operating Rules.

When you first walk into the layout room, the following few photos are what you see. This is a case where photos don't do it justice.

I couldn't wait any longer to post the next three photos! The green structure is a coke pusher. I once arrested a "coke pusher" but I've never built one!
Tom spent three months scratch building it. It is most impressive and yet another focal point on the railroad.

Thanks for following along.

Thanks Tom for the pic's, can't wait for the next installment.

What a great layout and a gracious host. I honestly look at model railroading primarily as an artistic thing and will admit to having had ZERO interest in operations. Today, after a minute amount of clumsy switching - I get it.
Tom's modeling first jumped out at me from the cover of a Great Model Railroads issue, probably back in the 90's. Although that layout has since been replaced, his present layout has the same striking character that caught my eye immediately when I saw the cover of that GMR. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but it's a perfect combination of colors and textures, heavy industry in the form of towering structures, and most significantly - heavy heavy weathering. It's no surprise Tom spent many years in the area and the industries portrayed as his layout really captures the gritty feel perfectly.
This structure alone reminds me that I don't want anything "new, nice, or neat" on my layout ;D
John
OMG, we've got another super-talented L'il Tommy among us!
Everything on his layout is superstupendous awesome - hope he can live among
us redneck patch-it-up folks! ;D ;D ;D ;D
He'll need a GOOD sense of humor!!
You Florida guys are really doing some great stuff, jim
While I missed yesterday's visit to Tom's place :( I have had the great privilege of visiting it in the past. :) It's really quite a sight to see. Massive scratch built structures, serious operations, terrific modeling all around. What more can one say? Glad to hear the SBG had a great time. ;D

We missed you yesterday.....don't let it happen again! ;D
Its been awhile and we all need to touch base and catch up with what's been going on.
WOW, WOW.!!! Thank you Tom and the rest of the SBG for taking the day trip to see the other Tom's layout. I have a passion for steel mills, having worked for USS one summer and attending college in Pittsburgh. There is something magical about all the buildings, smoke, smells that stay with you. for those following my railroad, I plan on a steel mill area. The railroad approach on two levels is done, now it is on to building location, trackwork, etc. seeing this layout gives me more ideas and incentive to really get going on this portion of the layout. This area speaks of lighting, sound and more details to explore. Thank you for your photos, keep posting more pictures please. I really need the encouragement. Absolutely great guys, thanks.

We had a great time and I have lots of photos to upload. I put that green coal pusher on last night just for you! There is so much going on around a steel mill. It can keep you switching for hours.

I am in the train room working on the dual track bridge leading to materials bins for the steel mill. I am really stoked about the steel mill. Boy am I in trouble. WOW! Keep them coming.
Tom and SBG thanks for coming down and seeing the P&WV and Union RR. It is a lot to try and under stand operations but the group did really well for the first time. Structures are still my first love and operation comes right in at second. . If any one has any question please let me know. Frank/ erie man if I can help answer any question let me know. I worked at Clairton Work from 72 to 82 when 5000 in our plant got laid off. You needed 25 years to keep your job. Funny thing is I got my pension papers last week.
Thanks again for the nice comments.

Great looking railroad and welcome to The Modeler's forum. I worked in the Auto Industry for 32 years and spent my time using that steel you produced. I hope you will become a regular here. Looking forward to the updates of your layout thread.

Tom,
Thank you for the wonderful layout that you have created. Brings back old memories. I was a summer intern 1965 at the USS research Center in Monroeville. They would take many of us on tours of several mills around Pittsburgh. I graduated from Carnegie Tech in 1966. I don't get back there anymore, but have fond memories of the school, city and USS. Made a lot of great friends. It is one thing to see a steel mill from afar and another to take a tour through the living, breathing monster. On one of the tours while standing near a blast furnace, it started to rain. so much for a clean suit. fortunately, I was in the control room during the downpour. As I progress on my steel mill area, if you see any issues in my posting, please let me know. In case you don't know, my railroad is The Morristown & Erie railroad - Western division. Please stop by and take a look for my progress. I really like to build scratch structures or modify them. The steel mill will be one of my major features on the layout. I am cramming a lot of buildings in a small area, well kinda small.
Frank / Erieman
Tom, Welcome to our little crazy corner of the world.
Again, thanks for the tour and the Operations 101 course you held Saturday. I was awed by your work on the layout and amazed at the complexity of the operations.
You were very understanding with a bunch of novices and I know all of us appreciated you patience with our hundreds of questions. I look forward to seeing you and your group in action.
Thanks again Tom and don't be shy about getting up here to see the St.L&D.

Thanks for posting more pictures of Tom's ( not Tom L's layout because he doesn't have one yet, unless you count the pieces). I recall that Tom L. had mentioned that the layout was two levels, but totally forgot about it until I saw your photos. Keep them coming. Looks like a lot of good stuff on the lower level as well.

Frank,
The lower level holds some wonderful treasures as well. I was working my way around the layout but I'll give you some of the stuff under the steel mill. I need about an hour or two to crop and upload them.
PS: I did get your last drawing but haven't had the time to really look at it closely! But I will!
Tom ;D
I told Frank, Erieman, I would show some of the treasures under the steel mill or lower level. First I want to show this scene of four photos. The USS wrokers come out of the front gate and immediately go to the nearest bar for a nice tall cold one! The buildings are from Downtown Deco.

The followiong set of photos is from one of my favorite spots on the layout! This area is on the lower level.
Tom did an article, it was published in the ModelRailroad Hobbyist Magazine, on roof top details. The following six photos are of the buildings and the roof details as well as the area around the structures. The structures are DPM and all are facing towards the back drop so you only see the rear of the building.
This scene is fantastic.

Doug,
I'm not sure what Tom W. used for the fence material but I've used wedding veil(sp) material in the past. I've also used a ribbon material I got at Hobby Lobby. The material comes in different sizes.

Here are the last of the photos I took when visiting Tom W's layout.

I hope ya'll have enjoyed the photos of Tom Wilson's layout. Tom was a very gracious host and was patient with us as we have never been operators before.
Also, Tom's layout will soon be featured on the ModelRailroad Hobbyists Magazine series from TrainMastersTV.com. I'm not pushing the series but check it out for your selves. It seems pretty cheap for the stuff you have access to.
Tom,
Thanks for posting the wonderful pictures of Tom Wilson's layout. He has done a wonderful job of capturing the Steel mill look. Brings back memories of Pittsburgh and the surrounding area. Really enjoyed the layout. It got me pumped about starting my steel mill complex. Oh, this is so much fun.
Frank / Erieman
Frank,
Yes, it is so much fun! I guess this is the reason we say, "This is the greatest hobby in the world".
Tom ;D
Mr. Tom
Thanks for the detailed look of this layout. It is always nice to see other peoples work and the fun we have with the hobby.
Bill
Thanks; I like Tom W's eye for scenery; not too crowded, structures done with practicality in mind.
Everyone, Thanks for the nice comments. The fence was an Alloy Form fence. After looking at the pictures I have to go back and repair it again. I have plexglass that goes in front of a couple of scenes that has to be put back on after the video taping by Trainmasters.
Have a good one.
Tom
Here are a few more of the shots I took.....
And a few more.....that's Tom and Bill (the Judge) in the first photo.....
and the last 3.....
Many thanks to TomW for letting a bunch of houligans into his home and exposing us to operations and a great layout.
We all look forward to another visit and a chance to return the hospatility!
Thanks again for sharing this layout with us. Tom has done a great job.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TOM! ISN'T THIS THE RETIREMENT YEAR?
