Hi All:
Arrived home from vacation in the Outer Banks NC On Monday. Glad I'm not there this week.
Here's my next project. FSM #120 2 Stall Roundhouse.
Karl
Glad you're out of the line of fire Karl.....I'll be watching your work on this one with interest.....I still haven't completed mine from a start in the early 80's. :)
Hey Greg:
Cool get it out and build along with me.
Karl
wow, I picked this up a few months ago,,,, will be following along with interest. I'm finding the floor with rails section a tad confusing so this will definitely be a learning thread for me!
Thanks Karl!
Hey Bob:
I haven't there yet so I may be confused also. We shall see.
Karl
I always liked the look of this kit--I'll be following along.
--George
Hey Opa George:
Thanks for following along.

Hey Greg:

Karl
Interesting idea.....sent you a PM.....I'd like to chat about it. :)
Great kit Karl....I'm part way thru it...I did board on board for the walls and floor in lieu of the scribed sheet...also I framed the roof and added a work pit in one of the bays...am anxious to follow along with your build
Terry
wow Seabee, That looks amazing! With all the re-working, is it even the kit anymore? ha ha!
I always enjoy a build from postalkarl.
Bring it on, Karl!
Jaime
Hey Seabee:
Looks just great. Love what you did.
Karl
Hey Jaime:
Glad you enjoy my builds. Glad to have you aboard.
Karl
Karl,
Dang, just the other day you started the thread and prior to me coming back to post, the walls are already in place. Very well done, loving it all.
Tom ;D
Hey Tom:
You must be looking at Seabee's kit. I just started mine and am still working on the walls.
Karl
Another gem!
I'm sure you will do it justice Karl.
I'll be following along to see how this comes together.
Jerry
Hi Jerry:
Thanks appreciate your following along.
Karl
Hi All:
Finished u one of the sidewalls yesterday. Lots of cutting a fitting.
Karl
Karl, nice job on the wall. As a modeler who generally does not have the patience for detailed interiors, I salute the amount of time and skill it takes to do a good job. I do love to see them, though, and one day will buckle down and attempt it.
George
Hi George:
Thanks for the great compliment. Much appreciated. Yeah George did interior detail on several of his kits.
Karl
Looking good, Karl....these FSM kits are such an adventure to work on...I wish I had bought every one that came out since my fist FSM kit back in the mid 70's....finances and time (life gets in the way) didn't permit it tho..
Terry
Hi
Terry:
Thanks for the compliment. I have about 25 FSM kits. The ones I'm building are not mine. They belong to a friend and are going on his layout.
Karl
Karl,
Great job on the walls. Love the interior view.
Tom
Hey Tom:
thanks buddy appreciate it.
Karl
Very nice work Karl! I'm enjoying following along.
Hi John:
Thanks buddy glad you are enjoying the build. Thanks for the compliment.
Karl
Hi All:
here's a few progress photo of where I am on this kit. Hope she looks ok.
Karl
Great looking 2 stall roundhouse.
Hi Curt:
Thanks appreciate your compliment.
Karl
Hi karl,
You bet it looks OK, even better than OK, Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!
Karl,
Looking fantastic. Nice work on the floors. How tedious was all of the interior wall studs & bracing?
--George
Hi Steve:
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi George:
thanks glad you like the floors. Interior bracing wasn't tedious just a little time consuming.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Been working on the roof. A little tedious cutting it out as it it 1/6th thick card stock and it's a little tough to cut. Here's a pic. Next is to add the roofing. Kit has corrugated roof. I thinking rolled roofing. The thickness of the roof is actually a good thing as it provided good strength for A Removable Roof.
Karl
Karl,
What were the choice of paints you picked out for the interior and exterior ?
Tommy
looking real good Karl.. As I look thru the instructions, the part of how to lay the rails on the interior floor is where I get just a little lost.....looking forward to how you do this
Hi Tommy:
Outside walls are Depot Buff. Inside walls are A&I Stain. The trim Is Zinc Chrommate Primer.
Karl
Hi Bob:
I'm A little lost on it to. I contacted my friend and he hand lays track. When he gets back from vacation he will help me with it. We may even do narrow gauge. Thanks for the compliment.
Karl
That was my thought also: hand laying the track
Looking very good, Karl
Terry
Yeah Bob:
The guy I'm building for will help me with the track. I said maybe HOn3. We shall see.
Karl
Hey
Terry:
Thanks a lot appreciate it.
Karl
Hi All:
Finished the roof today. The main roof is rolled roofing. The add on roof is tar and gravel.
Karl
Karl,
Looking great!
Marty
Hey Marty:
Thanks much appreciated.
Karl
Roof looks good, Karl. Nice aging with the white/gray.
--George
Very nice Karl.
Hey George & Curt:
Thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl
Karl,
I agree, roof looks great.
Tom ;D
Hey Tom:
Thanks buddy appreciate it.
Karl
Great looking roofing, Karl...one thought.. per the instruction sheet the skylites sit down directly on the roof material...prototypically, the skylights would probably sit on an 8" +/- curb...keep the pix and narrative coming
Terry
Great build. Sure brings back the memories, paint color and all. This was the first FSM kit I ever built and it had just the right amount of challenges for me. Sure learned a lot from George.
Hey Terry:
Thanks for the compliment. Not sure about the curb thing on the skylights. I followed the instructions. Maybe you could give me A little more info on the curb thing.
Thanks Karl.
Hey Bob:
Glad you like what I've done so far. Thanks for the compliment.
Karl
Karl...it's a picky little thing I now wish I hadn't posted...I tend to get anal about these models and being true to real life...maybe it's my Architectural/construction background...I'll pencil sketch what I'm referring to and upload it.....
Terry
Hey
Terry:
thanks that would be appreciated.
Karl
Karl...the attached crude sketch represents a section cut thru the roof/skylite....the skylite sits on top of an 8-12" curb which in real life creates a more watertight seal than if the skylite sat directly on the roofing surface....
Terry
Hey Terry:
Thanks for the drawing.
Karl
Hi All:
Going to my friends house that I'm building this for and we are going to install the track. By Sunday I hope to be back on this project.
Karl
Hi guys:
I went to my friends and we laid the track in the roundhouse. Instead of standard gauge we decided on Hon3. Here's a photo of the track installed in the round house.
Karl
Karl,
Man, that really looks great. Very well done and thanks for sharing the photo, love it.
Tom ;D
Great looking interior Karl.
Hi Tom & Curt:
Thanks for checking in and glad you like how it came out. Thanks for the compliments.
Karl
Hi All:
As can be seen in the last photo the HOn3 track has be laid in the roundhouse. I started priming casting with Earth and will continue to point them. Will also glue the round house to the floor and add the chimney to the rear wall.
Karl
Hi All:
Opps forgot the pic.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Getting back to work on this guy. Roundhouse is being glued to its floor. So now I have to get started on finish painting the castings. Lots of work as there are many. First I will have to get the rear chimney painted and installed and adjust the main roof to fit around it. This will be A little bit of work but shouldn't take to long.
Karl
Looks great Karl. I haven't seen many of these built. I've seen many of the John Allen engine house but this one is an excellent design also. Will the door openings fit a standard HO loco? I love seen these older FSM kits built.
-Steve
Karl , I'm just catching up on all the projects that have been going on and finished, why am I not surprised to see you going at another. Looking really good.
Hey Lynn:
thanks appreciate the compliment.
Karl
Hi All:
got some more work done today. Signs. Vines and castings added to the back wall. Also finished one of the side walls.
Karl
Nice additions.
Hi Curt:
Glad you like the additions. Thanks buddy.
Karl
Just catching up...beautiful work!!
John
Looking good Karl..... 8)
Looking great Karl! It's all about the details.
Fantastic details Karl.
Jim
Karl, that has come together beautifully. The vines, signs and other outdoor clutter details look great.
--George
Karl,
I have not noticed in different forms the building of the FSM 2 stall roundhouse. I think the only one I had ever seen built & installed in a layout was Hayden/Frary old Dead River & Carrabasset HON30 layout years ago (Page 92 Model Railroader November 1979)
Love seeing people build the FSM kits instead of collecting them
Does George Sellios have this structure on his layout. I do not remember seeing a photo of it on his layout
The above being said your workmanship & detail has come once again as outstanding. Loved reading about your methods to build the kit
Look forward to your next build
Mike Sigmon
Hi Gregory:
thanks glad you like it.
Karl.
Hi John:
thanks appreciate your comment as always.
Karl
Hi Jim:
Thanks glad you like the details.
Karl;
Hi George:
Thanks appreciate you comments.
Karl
Hi Mike:
Hey thanks for the compliments. I'm not sure if George has it on his RR or not. I will ask him next time I talk with him. I don't ever remember seeing it at any of the open houses I attended. Glad you like how it is coming out.
Karl
Hey All:
I'm working on painting more casting for the last outside wall. Then on to the interior.
Karl
Hi All:
finished painting the casting and installed them on the other outside side wall. On to the interior.
Karl
Very nice! Looks ready for business. --Opa George
Hi Opa George:
Thanks George. Finished one inside wall today. I do see that I forgot to glue the sink to the wall to the left of the toilet. I will put it there.
Here's a pic.
Karl
Excellent modeling Karl.
Hey Curt:
Thanks buddy appreciate it.
Karl
Looks fantastic Karl. Karl do you follow any particular format for painting your castings?
Karl,
Great job on all the details. Perfect as usual.
Tom ;D
Karl,
Looking good Karl, you do nice work!
Hi Lynn:
No I just paint and weather them.
Karl
Hi Tom & Steve:
Thanks for the compliments. I finished up the interiro today. On to the roundhouse doors.
Karl
Great job Karl.
Thanks Curt much appreciated.
Karl
Hi Karl,
Your interior detail looks great. Ae you goingn to add lighting to show it off?
Hey Steve:
Thanks buddy. No Electricity and I don't get along.
Karl
Hi Guys:
The roundhouse is finished. Scenery will not be added in front or on left side and track needs to be laid here. The turntable need to be in place to do this to get track into the right position.
Here's a photo of it.
Karl
How come your HO scale painters didn't paint the inside walls (only the framework)?
Nice work, Karl. Lots of detail in that interior, and it looks good.
--George
Nice finish, what are you going to use for a turntable? Any threads with your layout around?
Karl
Another great looking build. ;)
Hey Jim:
Inside walls are A&I stain per instructions. I wouldn't want them that bright anyway.
karl
Hi Opa George:
thanks much appreciate the compliment.
Karl
Hi Lynn:
Thanks for the compliment. Don't know about the turntable. I built it for a friend and the turntable will have to be acquired.
I do not have a layout.
Karl
Hi John:
thanks buddy appreciate it.
Karl
Great job Karl..... 8)
