So I mentioned that I was doing some work in O scale lately. Here's one of my O scale goodies, Doug's Soda Shop. I plan to add some kids on bikes around the shop from woodland scenic so this should be a lot of fun.
So here are a few photos of what is included in the kit.
So lets get started.
As always, we begin with bracing the walls of our model with 1/8" square basswood. I used a single edged razor blade to cut this material to length and then glued it in place with Aleene's Fast grab tacky glue. Please note that on the front and back of the building, I placed the basswood all the way to the edge of the walls while on the sides of the building the bracing is recessed back 1/8".
On this model I was having some trouble identifying the top and bottom of the clapboard siding so I made indicators marks on the inside of the structure.
Here's a nifty detail that I found on Ebay. It's an 4pack of O scale Coke bottles. Sorry Tom, I couldn't get Pepsi bottles. I have to look up the part number so when I do I will post it into the build thread.
So at this point with the bracing finished, it's time to do a test fit to see if everything is going to work. I decided to place some of the details into the scene to see what the finished building will look like.
Bruce,
Nice start on the free kit. As long as you aren't drinking the coke, its Okay by me! ;D ;D ;D
Tom ;D
Another kit build by Bruce.....you're really .jumping in with both feet.....I'll be watching this one also. :)
A great start.

I really wish I could have found Pepsi bottles. As it turned out, these were from that Danbury mint collection. I bet they never thought I would use them on an O scale model.

Best way to do things. Back when I was posting on that other forum, I typically had three projects going at once so this isn't new for me. That way when I get stuck on one project I can switch over to another one and not lose time much time on the workbench. There is actually a third project in the queue as well that I will start a thread on after the model contest here in Boise on Oct 20,2018. It's going to be a surprise....

A great start.
Thank you. As they used to say on Johnny Carson's old Tonight show, more to come.
;D ;D ;D
Painting
For this structure I did a simple India ink and alcohol wash on the walls of the structure and then dry brushed the walls with a light cream colored acyrilc paint. I then added signs to each of the walls using George Sellios method of sanding the paper signs on the front and back and then gluing them to the wall. I like to work with each wall separately and then glue them together. Next up was painting the window and door parts which are also laser cut parts in this kit. One problem I did have was finding my cut lines when I started removing the parts from the laser cut board. By accident I came up with a good solution to this problem and that is to turn the part over and cut the parts out from the back of the sheet were there is no paint to obscure my sight-lines.
At this point I was pretty happy with my walls so I decided to glue everything together. I used a small homemade jig to square up the walls while my Aleene's Fast grab tacky glue dried. Since this glue dries in about ten minutes, I use two jigs and glue up the two pairs of walls in separate jigs.

Neat kit and I love the price :-)

Cousin Brucie,
Looks very nice. When are you going to start the "O" scale layout? Just Kidding.
Tom ;D
Nice looking building.

Believe it or not, it's going to get started pretty soon. My Current On30 logging RR plan is about 8'x10' in size and will be built in a spare room in three phases over the next few years. Phase 1 is a 4'x6' chunk, Phase 2 is a 4'x8' and phase three is about 3'x6'. The neat part is that I have been collecting On30 cars, loco's and track over the past few years so I have a pretty good start on the equipment part of the railroad. All the switches are purchased for all three phases.

Hahaha , I think Jaime meant that as a rhetorical question , when you go to that forum look to the right hand columns where it says Top 10 contributors and NEMMRRC. ;)
I didn't even know that forum was still running, I see PostalKarl found his way back to it too.
Lol
I'm a kidder.
I miss the old kitforums. It is still running but man is it a hassle to use it. It now plays advertisement videos on top of each photo. We love photos !!! Don't block the photos.
Carry on. Great kit and I'm glad to learn Fos is still doing the free kits. I once paid $50 for the free kit with my name on it :-\ lol.

Ya, it's still running these days. Amazing for sure. I figured I was going to find another dead link in my browser when I looked that one up.

I thought that you where on the old forum!. But I wasn't sure of my facts. They say the first thing to go is the mind but I think it's the waistline. So, what was I talking about?
Hehe
It's all good. I love talking model trains.
Jaime
Y'all are right about the "other" forum.....I just tried to log in and was successful. There still isn't much activity and those thing flying around when I looked at a couple of photos was annoying, but it is still there. ???
I decided to paint the sidewalk portion of the kit with Apple Barrel Dolphin gray colored paint. I've been using this cor concrete coloring for years as it looks pretty good under my layout lighting in the basement. Next up I stole borrowed some figures from O scale Woodland scenic Full Figured Folks sets A2728 and Bicycle buddies set A2752.
Now it's time for the fun part. Placing some figures into the scene. Here's what I came up with. And a quick test fit on the structure base was done to see the results.
Another nicely done build.
Well done Bruce..... 8)
Thank you all for your comments. I am a little behind on posting due to some reactions to medications but hope to be back real soon.
Hey Bruce:
Looks very cool. Try something that I do with my figures. I think you will like it. Hit them with light black wash and then dry-brush them with a light gray. It makes them blend with the rest of the model Let me know what you think. This is a tip I got from another modeler.

Thank you very much Karl. I have admired your work for years so I appreciate you liking the model and the tip. And it typical fashion, I will
steal borrow the tip and give it a whirl on the model.
Back to the Build. Making the Sign
The sign turned out to be more a a challenge than I first thought. It turned out in my kit there was no material for building the sign so this is entirely scratch built. I started by putting some transfer tape onto a scrap of chipboard and then attaching the sign to the transfer tape. I then cut the sign out leaving the just the sign mounted onto the chipboard using a single edge razor blade. I then framed the sign using square 1/16" basswood painted in the english ivy trim color that I used for the rest of the building. I then built three supports that are about 8' long and glued them onto the chipboard with my favorite Aleene's Fast Grab Tacky Glue. Once this dried, I mounted the sign onto the building and then cut the three diagonal supports to fit behind the sign. A slight touch of weathering chalks were used to complete the sign.
At this point I attached a woodland scenic LED light into the structure and drilled a hole into my base to run the wires. I went ahead an glued the structure and tree to the base to finish up the model.
Next time we will work on the scenery for the base and try Karl's tip on painting the figures.
Nice job Bruce.
Nice little build, did you use Karl's suggestion with the figures?
Cousin Brucie,
Great job, the figures really bring it together. To bad you couldn't find any Pepsi cartons.
Tom ;D
Good work Bruce..... 8)
