Hi All:
This one is Next. The FSM #245 R. H. Starkey Coal Co.
Karl
Cool. Built this one, well 97% complete, a while back. I know who R.H. Starkey is but I won't spoil it for the rest. They can figure it out on their own. ;)
Karl,
Of course I'm following along. My file still has room.
Tom ;D
Following along , think I have this one in my stash of some day to be built H0 kits.
Ah, good. A new FSM build for another kit that I have. Let's go!
I'm following.
I'm in! Looking forward to it.
--George
Another great Karl build.......you know I will be watching this.
Jim
I'm in Karl.
Jerry
Looking forward to your next masterpiece Karl.
Impressive structure.....I'll be looking in Karl. :)
Hey everyone:
Thanks for checking in. Hope I can live up to the job.

Hope I didn't miss the final pictures.......after all, Karl is faster than "Greg Speed" when he is building.
Jim
Hi Tom, Lynn B & Chris:
thanks for checking in. Floquil Driftwood stain Has been put onto the bunker walls. Need to let it dry for a while before I can go on.
Karl
Karl,
Going old school with the Floquil Driftwood. ;D
Frank
Hey Frank:
Yeah I guess you could say that.
Karl
I'm like Vince....just checked my stash and there it is...I'll be following along to pick up some pointers
Terry
Hey Vince:
Glad to have you aboard. Here's a progress shot. Decided on a totally different color on this one. We shall see how it looks.

Karl
Looks great Karl, be interesting to see what you do to the signs on the walls.
So you started with the driftwood stain then turned to a different color , so the stain is under the color?
I've never had the driftwood stain but have read many discussions on folks swearing by it and seeking out for it.
Hey Lynn:
Thanks for the reply. Here is a photo of the front wall and one of the side walls. I decided on Depot Buff for the wall color instead of Box Car Red. It very lightly dry-brushed with a light gray. We shall see how it looks when assembled.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Opps put the wrong side wall in the photo. As can be seen it is not finished. some of the X-Bracing is missing. Sorry bout that.
Karl
Hi All:
Walls are assembled, NBW castings are added. Here's a pic.
Karl
Looks great so far Karl.
Karl looks like you have everything under control.
Nice work so far.
Jerry
Karl,
It's looking most excellent my friend.
Tom ;D
Looks really good, Karl. Nice color and the nbw castings look great and give it heft.
--George
Karl,
As always, your color choices are "spot on".
Hi Curt:
Thnanks for the compliment.
Karl
Hi Tom:
Thanks buddy.
Karl
Hi Opa George:
Yeah the NBW's add to the detail. Thanks.
Karl
Hi Jerry:
Glad You like the colors. Thanks.
Karl
Hi Jerry B:
Thanks appreciate it.
Karl
Yep the walls do look great, nice and squared up. I find using the box car red can be hit and miss being that it can stand out so boldly.
My 'trick' with red oxide is to apply it thinly, over an already-weathered base. For example, A&I or HunterLine stains, and then thinned red oxide paint or a light application of Pan Pastels. That technique works well for most colors that cover, such as yellows/ochres or even blue. It's not so good for white or other colors that don't cover as well.
dave
Thanks Dave thats a great tip.
Hi Lynn & Dave
thanks for the comments.
Karl
Hi All:
As I said I was going to change the roof from shingles to rolled roofing as I think it is more industrial looking. It is painted with Krylon Red Oxide Primer, then A&I stain was added. Then dry-brushed with Apple Barrel Country Gray.
Karl
Roof looks good Karl.
Karl,
I think it was that you were just too lazy to put the shingles on. ;D ;D ;D
Frank
Hey Curt:
Thanks appreciate the compliment.
Karl
Hey Frank:
I'll never tell.
Karl
It's been interesting seeing the approaches to coloring coal buildings (coal docks and dealers)!
dave
Roof looks great.
Yes - I like the look of the roofing. The red is a nice break from the usual grays. Also like the nail holes. Did you do that with a pin or something? Looks like they're too far apart to come from a rivet tool of pounce wheel.
Karl, the rolled roofing was a good choice. It looks tops in that color and finish (the dry-brushing and the nail holes)!
--George
Hi Dave:
Yeah I thought I'd try something different.
Karl
Hi Lynn:
thanks appreciate it.
Karl
Hi Vince:
yeah here is what I used for the nail holes. I don't even remember where I got it or what it is for in real life. But I like it. Actually the nail hole are not prototypical. The entire roof would leak. But what the heck I like the detail it adds. You would actually lay the first strip and nail it in place. The next strip would overlap the nails and so on up the roof.
Karl
Hey Opa George:
Thanks appreciate the compliment. Glad you like it.
Karl
Hi All:
The roof is finished on the main bunker with all of its 120 rafter tails.
Karl
Excellent Karl , I always forget that some roofs have patches , have never done it.
Karl,
This is coming along nicely. 120 rafter tails? Definitely better you than me!
Hi Jan & Jerry:
Thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl
Roof Patches and Rafter Tails. That's quite a task Karl, but I know you are up to it.
Jim
Great job Karl. Wow rafter tails those little things are a PITA!!!
How many did yu really make you know the ones that got away!! :)
Jerry
Hey Jim & Jerry:
Thanks for checking in. Yes Jerry a few did get away but that's ok.
Karl
Hi All:
Concrete walls are painted, weathered and installed.
Karl
Looks great Karl.
great job on the concrete. What did you use?
Dick
Hi Curt:
Thanks appreciate the compliment.
Karl
Hi Dick:
Thanks. Concrete walls are sprayed with Scalecoat II #F2134 Flat aged Concrete. Then A&I stains was applied. Chalks black & Rust were used for the weathering streaks.
Karl
The finished roof and walls look great.
Hey Lynnb:
Thanks Lynn appreciate the compliment.
Hey Guys:
Been working on the kit. Hopefully will have some pics soon.
Karl
I like the look, Karl. Weatherered but still a functional business.
Karl,
Looking really fine my friend. Well done!
Tom ;D
Hi Tom:
thanks for the compliment. finally got the conveyor finished. Also added trim on the walls between it and the main structure. Also added trim to the front so you can't see the end grain on the conveyor walls.
Here's a few pics.
Karl
Karl,
Looking good my friend. Well done.
Tom ;D
Looks good Karl.
Really nice modeling Karl.
Hi Tom, Lynnb & Curt:

Wonderful Karl , used to your quality and hope you'll build many more.
Looking good Karl.
Jim
Hi Jan & Jim:
Thanks for the compliments guys. Much appreciated.
Karl
Great job Karl...the coloring and weathering is spot on. Love it
John
Hey john:
Glad you like how its coming out. Thanks much. Got one of the stairs done today.
Karl
Hi All:
Both stairwells are done and the structure is glued to its base. Here's A few Photo.
Karl
Very nicely done on the stairs Karl.
Hey Curt:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.
Beautiful work, Karl. I really like the colors, but the red roof is outstanding. Also great coloring on the concrete foundation walls.
--George
Hey Opa George:
hey thanks so much really appreciate your compliments.
Karl
Hey All:
got the track laid today. Here's a photo. It will lighten up A little as it dries.
Karl
It's been interesting seeing how you approached the coloring. On my Jacob's Coal, I spent a fair amount of effort to get a lot of 'coal dust' weathering across the entire structure.
dave
Hey Dave:
Thanks for your comment. yeah I used to weather the crap out of everything. I prefer less weathering these days. I like cleaner looking buildings. Thanks for your reply.
Karl
Hey Lynn:
Thanks for following along. Working on the office today.
Karl
Nice detail with the coal mixed in with the ballast.
Hey Curt:
Thanks glad you liked the way it looks.
Karl
Hey All:
Been working on the office. Here's A pic.
Karl
Karl
I for one like the cleaner look of the buildings to.

Jerry
Hey Jerry:
Yeah me to on the cleaner look. Thanks for the compliment. Am Working on castings for the Office.
Karl
Hey Guys:
the office is finished and added to the diorama. Supply shed is next. It gets added to the office.
Karl
Karl,
Looking good buddy.
Frank
Thanks Frank appreciate it.
Looks great Karl. Like others I like the clean walls.
Karl
Another great build, keep up the good work my friend.
Karl,
The build looks great and the office is outstanding. I've always been impressed by your work but omigosh you painted the strings on the broom! That is crazy fine detailing. I am in awe.
--George
"Train Troll" makes coal carts in HO. http://traintroll.com/hocoalcartkit.html I have some of those to add to Jacob's Coal.
dave
Looks great as usual Karl, after my last build I too had been rethinking about a cleaner looking building.
Hey Curt:
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated. Glad you like how the walls look.
Karl
Hey John S:
Thanks for the compliment. Glad you like it.
Karl
Hey Opa George:
Glad like how the office turned out. I'm working on the Supply shed that gets attached to the office. Use A small brush on the broom.
Thanks:
Karl
Hi Dave:
Thanks for the info on the coal carts. I will checkem out.
Karl
Hey Lynn B:
Glad you like how it looks. Yeah I like the cleaner look also. Thanks.
Karl
Hi All:
Got a lot of work done today. Supply shed is finished and some scenery has been done.
Karl
Hey:
One more pic.
Karl
Karl, looking very good.
Very nice Karl.
That looks great Karl , and looks like they are in business, well done on the weathering.
Karl,
Wonderful, just wonderful. Very well done as usual.
Tom ;D
Hey Steve, Curt. Janbouli and Tom:
Hey Thanks guys. Appreciate the great compliments. Here's a few progress photos. Got the coal bins done. 1 more small building to go.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Opps forgot to add the photos.
Karl
Looking terrific , love the rusty roofs and the ground cover looks very good and well placed.
Very nice Karl. Although they are a small part I really like the 3 coal bins.
Hi Lynn:
Hey thanks so much. appreciate the compliment.
Karl
Hey Curt:
Thanks buddy appreciate the compliment. Yeah the coal bins are kinda net. I'm working on the last building which is the truck shed. After that finish the scenery and on to the next build.
Karl
Hi All:
parts are stained and read to assemble the truck shed.
Karl
Hi guys:
Got the studded walls finished. Now the outside boards need to be added. I'm going to finishe the walls in the color seen. It is just black A&I wash. I want it to looked rather weathered for a change.
Karl
Nice job on the framing.
Hey Curt:
Thanks appreciate it.
Karl
Hi All:
Got the truck shed walls, floor and roof supports done. I wanted the unpainted look. On to the roof.
Karl
Well you certainly got the unpainted look right, looking good Karl.
Love the garage Karl. The roof was different but the rest reminds me of the detached wooden garage my grandmother had.
Karl,
Shed looks great. You built that up pretty quickly. ;D
Frank
Hey Janbouli, Curt, and Frank:
Thanks for the compliments guys Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
Finished the truck garage. I'm not adding any interior detail as I want to make sure there is room to park the trucks. There isn't much in there anyway. I will be adding it to the diorama and finishing up the scenery and then adding fences.
Karl
Hey All:
I'm almost done. Truck shed is in place. Scenery is added and i putting the fences in. Will take final photo when finished.
Karl
That little shed is just perfection! Love it -nice work Karl.
John
Hey John:
Thanks for the compliment. Glad you liked it
