Hi all,
This is my first post on the modelers forum. I model in HOn3. My layout consists of six modules that depict Cimarron, Colorado and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. As a member of the Near Sighted Narrow Gauge club, we display our layout a few times per year at various show, mostly in the Rocky Mountain region.
The next structure that I need for the module is the store that sits behind the ice house. The Wild West Models Miners Supply https://wildwestmodels.com/products/miners-supply.html (https://wildwestmodels.com/products/miners-supply.html) is very similar except that it is a mirror image of what I want. So, being one who just cannot leave well enough alone, I decided to build the kit as a mirror image.
For starters, the floor is flipped over. And all the walls are all inside-out. So, all the laser etching for the outside walls is now on the inside. I'll be building this structure as it appears in the photos from the early 1880s, before any of the additions. It is in the lower right corner of this image at the Denver Library http://digital.denverlibrary.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/p15330coll21/id/8231/rec/25 (http://digital.denverlibrary.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/p15330coll21/id/8231/rec/25). The structure at that time had no paint except the windows, which appear to be white, or at least a light color.
I've added horizontal siding to the front wall and random width board and batten siding to the rest of the walls. All the color on the walls was done using Prismacolor markers.

Off to a good start , following along , and welcome aboard Larry
You're off to a great start Larry.....I'll be looking in and Welcome to the Forum. :)
Welcome and I will be following.
Larry,
Welcome to the forum, happy you joined in on the challenge.
I'll be following along.
Tom ;D
Glad to have you on board Larry.
I will be following along as well.
Jim
Welcome! Looking forward to your project.👍🏻
Larry,
Welcome to the forum!
Thanks to all for the gracious Welcome. I look forward to all your comments.
The Miners Supply is moving along. The windows and doors are painted and installed. I still need to find or make door knobs. On other structures, I've put a small straight pin in the Dremel and filed it down to the correct size. I'll probably do that here.
The boards on the back of the false front are in place. The structure is not glued together yet. The tabs are in the slots to see how it all fits together. As always, the photos show things that were not visible otherwise. There is some cleanup and touch up in places.
Next up is the cornice and the boardwalk by the back door, followed by gluing the walls together.

Looks good Larry.
Larry, very nice build so far and I am following along. I like the fine gradations in color you achieved with the Prismacolor markers. I have never tried them and am always looking for interesting techniques.

George, Thanks for the comment and thanks for following along.
I've been using the Prismacolor markers for a couple of years now and like them. The pens come in two styles. The PB series have a round brush style point and the PM series have a broad chisel point. I use both styles. Both have a fine point on the opposite end.
The siding is done with just three colors: Cool Grey 30% (PB-110), Driftwood (PB-203), and Light Umber 50% (PB-274). I'll usually start with the cool grey with the chisel point and just color the entire piece of stripwood. Then I use the driftwood with the brush point on top of the grey. I'll do either a full cover or a random color depending on the effect I'm after. A factor in the coloring is the time between color applications. If the second color is applied immediately after the first, they will blend together. By waiting a few minutes between colors and using the brush style, you can achieve random colors. A little of the umber goes a long way. It is an intense color compared to the grey and driftwood.
The workers came back today and made a lot of progress. The building is now glued to the floor and the trim is installed. Time to test fit the roof.

Larry
Welcome to the forum. Your build is great. I will be following along.
Watching and learning, thanks for posting. Will be interested in how the door knobs mentioned turn out.
Jim D
Great progress
Jim D,
Here's the lowdown on the door knobs.
After gluing the roof together, I decided to tackle the door knobs. I started with Dritz #8s Sequin Pins. After chucking the pin in my cordless Dremel, I used a 6" mill bastard file to turn the head down to about 3 scale inches (.036"). The shaft of the pin is .020", but since it won't show, I elected to not turn it down.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.modelersforum.com%2Fgallery%2F906-080119124319.jpeg&hash=f87044794159ae08bf0014f115115728f17399a0)
The pin was then cleaned in alcohol and then dipped in Blackin-It and then in water to stop the reaction. While that was working, I made the backplate out of 1x4 styrene. The styrene strip was a bit thick, so I thinned it by drawing it across 320 grit sandpaper. After a couple of dozen strokes, the styrene was down to about .008", which should look ok. Charcoal color paint made for a good match to the blacken-it.

Next came the hole in the door. I used the styrene as a guide to drill the hole. Then cut the styrene to length, slipped the pin through the hole and secured with a bit of glue.

Larry, that is some fine and impressive detail work on the doorknobs.
--George
Also really nice job on the windows.
George, the door knobs were a fun little detail to add.
Curt, thanks for your comments on the windows. My technique is quite simple. I just sprayed them with Walmart grey primer and then dry brushed them with acrylic craft paint.
Well, I finished up the store today. After the door knobs yesterday, I installed the roof, and covered it with red tar paper roofing from Builders in Scale. I then added a Grandt Line chimney and stove pipe. I built a foundation from masonite that will be attached to the module so I can remove the building when traveling.
Weathering was done with Pan Pastels. Next I will construct the matching outhouse.

Love the red roof, it really pops.
Larry,
Really nice modeling! I'll be borrowing the way you make the plate for the door knobs. That is something I have never bothered to add to my structures, but really makes a difference. Thanks for sharing that great detail.
Larry;
Thanks for sharing! While the entire model looks great, what a neat touch with the door knob and backplate. I hope to include that neat feature in upcoming efforts of my own. Thanks again.
Jim D
Very nice work, Larry.
Jeff
Great looking model Larry! The red tarpaper really makes the model pop.
Larry, agreed, beautiful job and really nice attention to detail. The diagonal boards on the rear of the false front add a special touch.
--George
Thanks for a great build Larry , love the weathering of the wood , the red tar paper roof, and the sign looks very authentic.
Thanks all for the positive comments. I look forward to seeing your door knob / backplate modeling. I'm glad you like the red roof. I tried some other color samples, but did not like them as much as the red.
The Miners Supply kit originally had a shed roof addition on the back. Since I didn't use it, I thought that by adding one more wall, it would make a good coal shed. I finished the outhouse as well. Other than adding a a little weathering and a few details, the kit is finished and I can move on to the next project.

Great repurposing.
Looks great Larry. Nice texture and colors. Everything really feels natural.

Hey Larry H:
Looks great so far. I'm following along.
Karl
I needed a diorama for the club meeting so I threw this together from stuff in the overflow bin.

Larry,
Great job on the diorama. Love the bear looking in the rear window.
Tom ;D
Nice structures and scenery.
Jeff
Don't know which I like more, the tall pines or the structures. Everything looks great and is tied together expertly in this scene. Great job.
--George
Great scene.....well done Larry..... 8)
Larry, I really like those tree's.........Dennis
Thanks for all the kind words. The diorama was great fun.
The trees are made from chop sticks that are tapered on the belt sander then stained. I drill a hole in the bottom of trunk and insert a small nail with the head cut off.
The branches are scotchbright scouring pads torn into rough round shapes. They are then put on the chop sticks and cut to shape. A bit of hairspray and some ground foam finish them off.
