As promised, I'm starting a build thread for my Schwarz Foundry, a tribute to Tom Schwarz, for my 2019 Challenge Build.
To start with here are the open box pictures. It should be noted that this FSM kit is one of the, "extremely rare", extremely valuable orange box kits. I asked George about the orange box and he told me that it was a mistake from his box supplier. They used the wrong color stock. He replaced the boxes with yellow boxes but a few kits were sold before the switch. I may sell this box on ebay. ;) If any collectors out there want to make me an offer before I do that send me a PM. :o
As you can see the castings made it through the paint booth before I remembered to take pictures.

Gleefully following!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Following.
Here is what is left in the box after the castings have been pulled out for the paint booth. I prepare my castings in batches so I have three FSM kits along with some extra castings all prepped and primed.

Here is a picture of the box with a correct yellow box that I pulled off the shelf for comparison.

Here is the roof sign that George shipped with the kit. A little computer work and a printer and we will transform Sewall's Foundry to Schwarz Foundry.

With that let the building begin. Thank you Dave and Curt and those that follow for following along.
As usual count me in
Eric
I will be following along as well..
Jim
I'll be following, John.
Another of my favourite FSM kits - and one that seems to occasionally come up for a half decent price. It may yet find a home on Tellynott!
Cheers, Mark.
Following along , I hope I have time in between all the following to do a build myself.
I've never been able to find one of these kits for a reasonable price- I'm jealous! Looking forward to following along on this build
Great choice! I built this a long, long time ago (it's packed away in a box and in desperate need of some repairs/refurbishment). It was one of my all time favorite builds. ;D
I'm following along as well. I have this one in the old "orange" box and was going to build it for Tahope. I opted for Dexter's Dead End instead.
Tom ;D
Hey John:
Built that a couple of months ago for my friends layout. It's a very nice little kit. Enjoy your build. I'll be following along.
Karl
The walls have been primed with Chamo Sand paint and I'm starting the gluing and bracing process.
I will be gluing the main building together before I start the detail painting of the walls. I have used this technique on my last four or five builds and like it better than the traditional finish everything flat and then glue it together. I find it easier and that I have less touchup painting.
Hey Johnny:
I built this one and it's A great kit. Will be following along.

Thanks for following along - I'm starting to put the walls together, today.
I'll be following along, looks like a ton of castings.
Eric, Jim, Mark, Jan, Bob C., and Bob B.
Thank you for following along, I'm a couple days behind on posting so I hope to get caught up, today.
The stone castings went together real nice after I squared them up on the disk sander. It took a couple clamping sequences to get all the glue joints.

After assembly, the structure was brought back to my detailing bench and I colored the stones with pan pastels. I actually, painted them on by adding alcohol. For the stonework I used Raw Umber with a Yellow Ocher Extra Dark. The Raw Umber was applied tenth Yellow Ocher was applied by dabbing the brush in a random pattern.

Painted the brick portions of the wall brick red and then followed up with a raw umber tint which was removed from the faces of the bricks with an eraser. I painted the vent fans a dark green.

I decided not to use mortar on this build. This is a foundry located in a industrial yard with Steam Engines. The mortar would be very dark.
The highlights of the stonework will be redone once the model is in place on the layout. I don't want to use a fixative and the handling durning the build process will take some of the highlights off.
I also did a final planning session on the structure placement on the layout. The white piece of paper is the footprint of the structure. The track gauges show how the position of the siding that will feed the foundry and a number of other businesses down the line.

Nice work Dave.
This is one of the older "before lasers" FSM kits where George cut out the window and door openings with a saw. The modeler had to do the cross cuts and glue upper and lower sections of walls together. It is amazing how much labor George put into each on of these kits.

Lots of interior bracking work to report today. Nothing worthy of a picture. Next step, is the assembly of building C.
John...sent you a PM.
Great thread, as yours always are. Those wall castings are gorgeous. I believe George hand-carved the masters, or did them stone-by-stone. The hidden details...like the cinder block embedded among the stones, are beautiful.
Thanks for the detailed tutorials!

George did most of the masters stone by stone. George told me that most of the originals were used on the F&SM.
Thank you for checking my spelling and sending me the PM. I had Tom's name spelled wrong on my sign. I want to say it was spell checkers fault - I just don't pay attention to spelling. I just printed a new sign and will correct the post above with the wrong spelling so someone doesn't see it and make the same mistake. Thanks for your help Dave.

Thank you for following along. You are right, building a layout is about putting many puzzle pieces together.
I'm behind the build with my thread updates. I have been taking pictures and will try to get this thread caught up today.
The main building for this kit consists of three structures that George calls building A, B, and C. I will use his designations as I proceed so it is the same as the instructions for the kit. So when I left off I was assembling building B. The wall assemble for building B and see are straight forward using the template cards George provides. I'm building the structures before I paint the walls, as I mentioned this is my new preferred way of doing it. I will be coloring the walls for building B and C with Hunterline Driftwood stain.
Building B is on the left in this picture, the walls for building C are on the right.

I painted on the window shades in build A.

The paint wasn't completely dry when I took this picture. I added a second coat to the windows to get the coverage I was looking for.
A little A&I and those window shades will look like there in a foundry.
I painted the interior Grimmy Black. There is no interior detail in building A and Gimmy Black is the appropriate color for the interior of a foundry. Trust me, I've seen a few of them.

Jan (aka Janbouli here on the forum) posted some pictures of one of his builds where he was using them, when he saw the way I used to do it with about 20 different weights. The sand puts the weight right were you need it. As I said it just works. Thank you for following along.

Thanks for following along. I love doing them. My next four our five builds will be mostly wood.
Today, I made some more progress on this build. The buildings B and C got a coat of Hunterline Driftwood.

As soon a I get the rafter ends installed (not my favorite part of the build) on the main building, it will be time to start gluing the structures to the baseboard. I spent some time getting the baseboard read, including finding a wall casting for the other side of the pit area. I will need to do some cutting but I found one in my castings box that will match the one supplied by George with the Fox Run kit. I just have to cut it to size and paint it the same way I did for the Fox Run Casting. The part that I have to cut off to get the right height will work to extend it the length of the pit. It headed for the ban saw.

Everything is looking great, John. I really like the way you do your masonry walls, and the wooden walls look good with the Hunterline stain. I've been hearing so much about that line that I searched out some at a local show. Since then I've used it quite a bit. Really useful product that gives reliable results.

Thank you for following along and the kind words. This is my first build using the Hunterline stain - so far I like it. I believe it is alcohol and shoe die which is a combination I have used for years. My own formula. I bought it on the recommendation of Bob Butts at the Expo two years ago. I bought the driftwood and cement for my first test and like the color of both. I put it on with a brush and as I said so far very good stuff.
On the building with the bricks low: Shouldn't the wood overhang, the bricks, rather than the bricks sticking out below the wood?

The short answer is yes for proper drainage - but the dozen or so builds that I have in my library off the internet and from layout visits built it like I did. The stack-up of the walls would require some trimming to the walls to make this happen.
Dave
Thanks for pointing it out - I'm not going to change it because it will never be seen on the layout. It will be on the back side of the building under the loading dock.

Today, I added the shingles to the dormers and the extension boards to the center dormer. These extension boards will be covered with metal roofing to make it look like a repair. I tarred this up like the repair nightmare that this roof would be. I also modeled it with the roof sagging in the middle from the weight of all the dormers.
Looks great John.
I added the metal roofing at the top of the dormer, built the front dock, added the window and door castings to building B, and did a test fit between structure A and B. I did a little work on the belt sander to get the fit I wanted between the two structures. Structure C is in the background all clamped up. I decided not to make the roof removable as George does in the kit. Mine will have LED lighting to show off the interior detail in building C. I will also be adding some gooseneck outside lights.
I also added the first of about a half dozen smoke stacks to the roof. I will be doing a lot of weathering to this build once it is in place on the baseboard and again when it is mounted in place on the layout.
Looking good John!
John,
That is really coming together nicely!
What a great looking structure! I love all the build threads because, as a relative newcomer to FSM kits, I've seen most of them in pics, but not as "intimately" as you get through a build thread. This is really nice. I'm looking forward to the weathering blast! Nice work!
John
As usual, the stone work and shingling look especially good.

John, I am really enjoying your build. Very clean work.
Question: In the last pic what is going on with the window frame in the lower left corner of the building? Is that meant to be a rotted out window?
Keep up the great work as usual! O and by the way, you picture lighting is always fantastic.

Thank you for following along and the kind words. Yes, the window casting that comes with the kit is a rotted out broken window and that is what I used. It will take some work with the weathering to get this just right. This is a working foundry that needs some repairs.
Thank you for the comment on the lighting. I have three LED spot lights above my workbench that are identical to the lights in my valiance on the layout. I have to be careful, I sometimes put me and or the camera between the lights and the model when I take pictures and we end up with a big shadow across the model. You can see the shadow on the workbench but not on the model in some of the photographs on the last page of this thread.
I have completed as much of the detailing on build A and B as I can without mounting them to the baseboard. As soon as I add the shingles and rafter ends to building C it will be time to glue them to the baseboard.

This structure will be weathered heavily since I have never seen a clean foundry and it's located in the center of a yard full of steam locomotives. Once this is mounted to the base board the chalk dust will be flying.
John, looking very good in all the details. The shingles are a standout for me. Beautiful!

Really, George Sellios? A stone overhang? There'd have to be some heavy duty framing underneath that. (I remember discussing overhangs with Jim Mooney of Bar Mills. I have the Cundy hotel and I said I wanted to replace the wood siding with brick, more in keeping with my city. Jim said, "How will you do the overhang? There'd be a lot of weight underneath all those bricks." I'm still pondering that.)
Coloring looks great!

Someone slipped the building inspector some C notes on this one, but it sure does look good. I just corrected two of them and in my mind added 8 inch I beams under the overhang and then covered them with wood. ;)
The two I corrected where with the dormer. The roof was flat or slightly running back against the slope of the main roof - I recut it and gave it some slope. The other was George had the metal roofing that was there, because of the leak caused by issue one, running horizontally. My metal roofing runs with the slope of the roof. George is an artist - and usually he is modeling something he saw. Sometimes it's something the building inspector missed. I know George, with his later kits, would have people look at his kits and "make sure I didn't do something wrong with the mechanical stuff". Probably because someone let him have it on some of these earlier kits.
When building an older FSM kit (#100, Jacob's Fuel), I was struck by what a great draftsman George is. But I'm sure my father would point out that being a good draftsman doesn't necessarily qualify you as a structural engineer :-)
(And on the Cundy Hotel, I'm thinking about a brick barrel vault and stone pillars. That probably has enough strength.)

This overhang is on stone pillars - to be added once it's mounted on the base board. It would still need steel reinforcement.
Update: The structures are being moved to the baseboard, today. The rest of the detailing needs to be done in place on the baseboard.
Here are a few pictures of the Three main structures along with the loading docks mounted on the baseboard. Let the detailing begin.

Thank you for the kind words and for following along. This is a fun kit to build.
A few comments for those that have built this kit. I'm doing a few things different. First, the foundry and the Fox Run Milling are next to each other and share the same coal drop pit. I have added another loading dock the will support a crane that will move the coal up to the foundry. The big crane that comes with the kit was sold to the S&S RR for their Locomotive Works. I made a few minor changes to the structures that was discussed above. I'm sure there will be a few more changes as I go through the detailing process.
Tonight, I will start documenting some of the changes that I'm making to the original kit for this build. I mentioned earlier that I'm not going to use the big crane that George had in the foreground. If fact I used that crane for my Locomotive Works build last year. In it's place I'm creating an out door work area where the molds can cool and be removed from the wood frame that holds the sand mold. To start with, I scratch built this little shed for the scene.

A little rust for the metal roof panels and this will be ready to add to the baseboard. You can also see the detail castings for this build scattered around the workbench in various stages of the painting process. More on this latter.

Thank you for the kind words. I like to have enough detail so the viewer can find something new every time they look at the scene. We all know where I got that from. Thank you Jan. The figures are probably from Prieser. I did some detail painting on them - and have some more work to do before I will be satisfied. I attended one of Dave Ravella's clinics on figure painting a couple years ago and I can't just put a figure on a build without some detailing. . I say probably Prieser because I have drawers full of figures that I have collected over the years and most of them are no longer in the original boxes.
