Happy birthday Karl
Doug
Hi Tom & Doug:
Thanks for the birthday wishes.Much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Bob C:
Glad to have you along. Hope I can help.
Karl
Karl
Another great kit - I will be following along.
Hey Guys:
Won't be working on this for a few days as I'm having some work done on the house.
Karl
Hey John:
Glad to have you aboard.
Karl
Looking forward to this one!
looking forward to your posts Karl! I started staining my walls and strip wood. this kit is a bit deceiving from the photos,,,, there is a lot going on in building this!
Hey Dave:
Thanks for following along. Appreciate it.
Karl
Hi Bob C:
Glad you are building this along with me. I will be following your build. Just getting back to it today as had plumbers here doing some work. I'm just starting to re3ad the instructions. I'll be checking out what you mean.
Karl
Hey Guys:
I'mn reading the instructions. George say a lot of coal companies were painted gray. I talked to him and asked what he thought of me doing it in gray and he said by all means. So that is what I'm going to do.
Karl
Hey Karl belated "Happy Birthday"! Guess we should have gotten you a cake or something along those lines!! 8)
I'll be following along!
Jerry
Hey Jerry:
Thanks for the birthday wish. Glad to have you following along.
Hey Tom:
Thanks for the birthday wish. Sorry I missed it earlier. Oops saw it above
Karl
Hi Guys:
The directions suggest using Red,Redish Brown or Gray. I called George yesterday and we talked about the wall colors. He suggested that I use gray for something different. So I am using Floquil Driftwood stain. Then an A&I wash dry-brushed with Apple Barrel #20526 Country Gray. I have all the painting done, signs are applied. I am now adding the wall bracing. When finished I will take photos.
Karl
I'm following and very interested to see this one come together. I need a coal yard on my layout and am considering different kits available. This will be very helpful.
--George
Hey George:
Glad to have you along for the ride. I'm finishing up the bunker walls. When done I will take a photo.
Karl
Hi All:
Finished up assembling the walls today. Painted with Floquil Driftwood stain, A&I wash and dry-brushed with Apple Barrel Country Gray. Hope they look OK.
Karl
Hey guys:
Walls are assembled.
Karl
Karl color looks fine to me. Great job.
Jerry
Karl great color and interesting building contours.
As always , great modeling Karl and at the speed of light , you must be feeding those elves in the shop good food ;)
Hi Jerry, Curt and Janbouli:
Thanks for all the great compliments. Much appreciated guys.
Karl
Hey Guys:
I had to figure out a way to install the rafter tails on this side of the loft roof as I could not see the tick marks on the roof. So here's what I came up with if anyone else build this kit. It works pretty well. I straightened out the crooked ones.
Karl
Someone (Motrak Models?) makes a jig for rafters. One side is 18" centers, the other is 24" centers. Same idea, but with the appropriate notch.
dave
Karl, walls look beautiful. I really like the shade of gray you used.
--George
Karl,
Moving right along, and looking great my friend.
Tom ;D
Hey Dave:
Thanks I will have to check that out.
Karl
Hey George:
thanks for the compliment. Walls are Floquil Driftwood stain, A&I Wash and dry-brushed with Apple Barrel Country Gray.
Karl
Hey Tom:
thanks buddy appreciate the compliment.
Karl
Looking very, very good Karl! I have a soft spot for coal company's and FSM kits. ;)
Hey Bob:
Thanks glad you like it.

dave
Hey Dave:
Thanks for the post.
Karl
Hi All:
Finished the main roof. As I said I went with rolled roofing as I think it looks more industrial. Here's a photo. Hope it looks ok.
Karl
Nice looking roof Karl.
Karl, very good choice on the roof--it looks more than ok. It really looks like it belongs. Nice job.
--George
Neat roof Karl. I'm a sucker for punishment so I'm going to use the Campbell's on mine ! I see you roofed before the chutes are installed,,,, I'm debating on doing my roof after the chutes so I can butt up against them with the shingles,,,,,looking forward on seeing more of your progress!
Hey Curt:
Thanks appreciate the compliment.
Karl
Hey George:
Thanks much appreciate the comment.
Karl
Hey Bob C:
you might want to think about installing the chutes first as it may be difficult to get those Campbell shingles on straight working between those chutes. I think the detailing the roof instruction will work out well. Let me know what you think. Did you start the kit yet?
Karl
Beautiful work Karl! The red weathered roof offsets the driftwood walls very nicely.
John
yeah Karl, I did start mine,,,, I think I will build the chutes and see how I feel as I shingle the roof and get close to the chutes..... thanks for the input!
Hi Bob:
Yeah I hear what you are saying. I decided to build one roof chute complete and install it and see how it came out. Here's A photo let me know what you think OK.
Karl
Looks great Karl! I'm going to tackle mine this week, maybe draw lines and shingles to the lines,,,, modeling is an adventure!
Hey Bob:
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Karl real nice job.
Jerry
The building looks great.
Great progress Karl.....impressive structure. :)
Hey Jerry, Curt & Gregory:
Thanks for the great compliments. Much appreciated. This is A tough kit. The steps take quite A while to complete.
Karl
Karl
Hi All:
The smaller roof is finished. On to the other side.
Karl
Tremendous work, Karl. The detailed wood framing is wonderfully done and gives the impression of a very substantial industrial building. I also like the roof colors.
--George
I agree with George, very nice.
Hey George & Curt:
Thanks for the great compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
The roof is finished. I took a while to build the 4 roof shoot as they contain almost 60 parts. Anyway here's a photo.
Karl
Really nice job Karl. The birds are a nice touch.
Hey Curt:
Thanks much appreciate the compliment. The pigeons come with the kit. Glad you like em.
Karl
Hi All:
Finished the stairs today. I did them differently than in the kit. I used A template from another FSM kit as I wanted my guard rails on the outside posts and my banisters on top of the posts. Hope it looks OK.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Next is to assemble the coal pit and install it into the base.
Karl
Tremendous Karl , your bar is set so high and yet you achieve it every time.
looks awesome Karl! stair railings are challenging to be sure!
Karl, stairs look great. I had to zoom in on the cool door at the top of the stairs for a better look. Very nice--is that a metal casting or wood?
--George
its a metal casting George,,,, (building the same kit,, following closely behind Karl!!!!)
Karl,
Gee...that gray color sure makes this one look different !
Another great model by a great builder.
Tommy
Hi Jam, Bob C., George & Tommy:
Wow guys thanks for all the great compliments. Very much appreciated. The Stairs are a metal casting.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Have the supports built for under the bunker. Also built the coal bin and laid the track.
Karl
Hi All:
Coal bin is finsihed, tr4ack is laid and the supports for under the bunker are built and glued in place.
Karl
It's interesting that you glued the frame to the base, rather than to the structure. I glued the frame to the structure, figuring it was easier to fudge any gaps/misalignments with scenery.
Of course, if you're sufficiently precise, this is not an issue. ;D
dave
Hey Dave:
I did it this way according to the instructions so it would be easy to add the scenery under the structures. According to the instructions this is the easiest way to take care of the gaps and etc. I checked the fit and it seem fine.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Scenery has been added under the bunker and it has been glued in place. On to finishing the converyor.
Karl
Very nice so far Karl.
This is not an April Fools Joke!! :)
A beautiful job on this one Carl.
Jerry
Hey Curt and Jerry:
Thanks for the great compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
I got the coal conveyor done this morning. Lots of parts to cut. All outside boards are individual pieces. Started the Hoist house this afternoon.
Karl
Looking good Karl!
I like the overall look. The grey wood looks better on-site than I thought it looked on the workbench.
dave
Hi Dave:
Thanks. Yeah I just talked with George. He said he really likes the gray color also. I also like the gray better than the red.
Karl
Hi All:
George called me this morning to tell me he liked the gray color better than the red and he likes how the kit is coming out. I'm currently working on the hoist house.
Karl
Hey guys:
Been working on the hoist house. It is not glued down as I still some work to do. Detailing and the like. Here's a photo.
karl
Hey Guys:
Here's another photo.
Karl
Looking real fine Karl..... 8)
Hey Greg:
thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
Hi Karl,
The project is coming along gret. I agree with George Selious and maybe you could tone it down somewhat.
That sir........... is cool
thanx
Bob
Hey Steve:
Thanks for the compliment. Not sure I know what you mean by tone it down.
Karl.
Hey Bob:
Thanks appreciate the compliment.
Karl
Karl,
Tone down the red on the roof so bright
That is really, really nice.
Hi Steve:
I see what you are saying. The funny thing is that it looks much brighter in the photos than in person. So I probably won't do anything to it. Thanks for your input. However just out of curiosity what would you do to it>
Karl
Hi Bob:
Thanks appreciate the compliment. Glad you like it.
Karl
Your build is coming along nicely Karl. I found the most problematic are the chutes and ended up trimming them out around the edges. In the instructions it looks like George "tarred" the space at the roof. I'm doing the red color, your gray looks fantastic. Next up for me is the pit. Did you have any issues building it?
Bob C
Hey Bob:
Thanks for the compliment. No I didn't have any problems with the pit. It went together fine. Are you posting photos on here. If so where as I haven't seen your build yet.
Karl
H Karl, I would first try using some pastels as a powder only. I have done that before and it works pretty well.
Karl,
Another great build sir. I love these builds of yours and I'm behind in getting all the photos into my "Karl S." file.
Fantastic build, just wonderful.
Tom ;D
Hey Tom:
Thanks buddy you know how much I appreciate you compliments. Thanks you sir.
Karl
Hey Steve:
What color powdered pastels do you suggest?
Karl
Karl,
I would try a light shade of burnt umber or grey. I would experiment first on a small section before you do the whole roof.
Hey Steve:
Ok thanks for the info. I try it on a scap made up roof and see if I like it.
Karl
Hi All:
Hoist house is built, detailed and installed as is the scenery around it and the back of the bunker.
Karl
Really nice build Karl.
Hey Curt:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
HI Karl--very impressive all around. Enjoying seeing this come together.
--Opa George
Hey Opa George:
Hey thanks fro the compliment. Very much appreciated.
Karl
Outstanding work, Karl...really top-notch!
John
Karl
The more you do the better it gets. The weathering is really the show case on this one.
Jerry
Hi John & Jerry:
Thanks for the great compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl
Beautiful job.
Outstanding as usual. The colors and rusty roof colors are fab!
Hey Karl, did you leave the back of the coal chute the bare wood? Like the instructions say,,,, can you notice the back? I'm thinking of putting the strip wood on the back like on the front,,,,
Hey Dennis, Darryl
Hey Dennis and darryl Thanks for the great compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Bob C.
No It is not bare wood. painted it to match the rest of the coal shute. It is very difficult to see. Just paint it and you will be fine.
Karl
Thanks Karl, !!that's what I was meaning,,,, if you had just painted it or put strip wood. So far the biggest pain was those coal chutes! Love how yours is coming out,,, I went for the red stain,,, it's definitely an unusual kit to build
Hey Bob C:
You mean the ones on the roof. Yeah I actually counted the parts. If I remember there were over 70 parts between the four of them. Where are you posting your photos?
Karl
in the daily section,,,, thinking about consolidating them into one thread!
Hey Bob:
Where is the daily section? I never heard of that.
Karl
Hey Bob:
When you build your office the 1/8" spacing on the long walls should be 3/32nd".
Karl
thanks Karl! The instructions called for 6 strips on the conveyor housing but 5 fit on mine,,,, looked at your photos and saw only 5 strips on the side of your conveyor,,,,, guess it was a misprint!
Hi All:
I'm working on the office. I using the same colors with the exception that I have added a color. This is also a George S paint scheme. I thought I'd dress it up A bit.
karl
He Bob:
Could be. Hope you saw my post above about the office spacing of 1/8" that should be 3/32nd. If you want feel free to post photos of your build on here with mine OK
Karl
Looks really nice Karl.
Karl, what spacing are you referring to regarding the office?
Hey Bob C:
Look at figure 15. The 2 long walls have an 1/8th in space at both ends of them. This space need to be reduced to 3/32nds of an inch.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Been working on the office. Walls are assembled and the front platform is added. Decided to go with a tar and gravel roof.
Karl
Karl,
As always, you are doing a fantastic job. Love it!
Tom ;D
Hey Tom:
thanks buddy glad you like it.
Karl
Have you thought about adding a scale platform for the coal trucks to drive over?
dave
Really nice Karl.
Hey Dave:
Yes it goes into the concrete in front of the office. Will probably build it tomorrow.
Karl
Hey Curt:
Thanks appreciate the compliment.
Karl
Looking good. !!
Jerry
Karl, really nice scene composition.
--George
Hey Jerry & Opa George:
Thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Guys:
finished up the office and got the parking lot painted and truck scale built. Also added some scenery.
Karl
Looking good Karl.
Great work as usual Karl, is this for someone's layout , you don't have a layout do you?
Hi John:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
Hi Janbouli:
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated. Yes this is for a friend 35 X 45 foot layout. He probably has about 100 kits that I have built over the years. The layout is finally started. You are correct I do not have a layout.
Karl
Karl, what is your method for the concrete driveway?
Hi Bob:
It is 1/16th inch thick task board cut to fit. Then scribed with concrete seams an cracks.
Karl
Karl, are you painting with craft paint or do you have old Polly Scale or such? Mine dried out a long time ago!
Hey Bob:
I used Scalecoat II #F2134 Flat Aged Concrete spray paint. They make other useful colors also ins spry or bottle. Some of the old Floquil colors. I use their rail brown spay on my track.
Karl
Looks great, as do all your builds.
Hey Bob Dye:
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
Diorama is done except for the rear right hand corner. It consists of 1 more small building and A junk bin. Should be done in a day or two.
Karl
Really nice Karl.
Nice job Karl! You are up to your usual standards of work. Very good
That looks spectacular, with the backdrop.
dave
Looks like a home run on this one Karl!!
Jerry
Hey Curt, Steve, Dave, & Jerry:
Thanks for the great compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
It is finished. Talked with George about turning the raised up building, Right Rear, at a 45 degree angle and he liked the idea. Here's the final photos.
Karl
Hi All:
More Pics.
Karl
A really spectacular job Karl.
Hey Curt:
Thanks for the great compliment.
