I now have the base painted for the color of the harbor water, not sure if I like it yet, so I'm asking what do you all think of the color?

I've had really good results with splotches of color over the base coat as demonstrated by King Frary (I guess on his website)...where is that? "Building an Expo module" maybe on YouTube?

It looks a little messy, but when the Mod Podge (or whatever gloss & texture coating you're using) is applied, it looks great. I think a single consistent color might look too uniform.

BTW, I love your concept, nothing beats a crowded, irregular, little waterfront scene.

I agree, that is only the base coat, I just want to make sure  I like it enough before I add different shades of color along the shore line and under the docks.

Thanks for your thoughts

I think it will work well for a base coat.  Looking forward to watching the build.

I decided to stay with that color as the base coat, but before I add different shades & shadows of other colors, I have to build my docks. The docks will be odd shapes. You can see the rough outlines of where the docks are going to be placed from the first photo. The docks are going to take a while to build because, I am building them, plank by plank. I could speed up building the docks by using scribed sheet stock, but I think plank by plank will be more realistic, and be well worth it, in the end.  Stay tuned for more photos, coming soon.

I worked about 2&1/2 to 3 hours last night, working on the first dock.  This is going to be the smaller of the two docks which will be placed in the lower right side, just before the river inlet.

I just finished the smaller dock and it fits nicely in it's location. I now have to add the dock supports,  pilings, and a lot of dock details before I can start on the larger dock. and then after that I will go onto the dry dock.

Your water definitely wants to be darker in the middle at deeper depths.
I know you said you were going to add color splotches later.

Your right, I do need to work on the water's color.  I made some color samples for the water, and I came up with something I really like, but I don't want to paint it on yet in fear of messing it up while working on ground cover, dirt roads and such. That will be down the road quite a ways.

as you can see a lot more work to do.  I need to add the roller tracks for the cradle to ride up on, also an overhead crane, and of course a hoist house, and work shop, all which have to be scratch built.  I'll post pictures  " better ones hopefully" when that section is done.

Very nice Sam.  I saw a post here in your thread where someone said they had never used or seen foam used like this.  To that follower I will tell you this.  Foam makes for a very solid base as well as very light construction.   Beats plywood all to heck.   It is really easy to work with.
All my module construction is done with this medium.  It can also be enclosed with framing for an entire layout.

Thanks Dave,
That poster would be  "bparrish---Bob"    I thought he was just kidding because I know he is a master modeler, I have seen some of his work so that's how I rate him.
The diorama base is gator foam, and all the land forms is 1" extruded foam and a little 2" foam in the top left corner.  Foam is very easy to work with, cuts easy, shapes easy It's a great product to model with.  So Bob, if you really never tried it, give it a shot. You'll like it.

Sam.

Thanx for the compliment regarding the master thing.

True confessions.     I completed my MMR about four years ago. It is something all modelers should consider; regardless of the horror stories that are flying around.

I was not kidding about the foam.  It has not found its way to downtown idaho yet.

I am a part of a two person group of trolley modelers. Me and him. We are considering adding some additional sections. I'll consider making stuff from foam.

Thanx

Bob, if you have a Home Depot or Lowes nearby, they should have it available or at least
order it!  Also, any building supply store, as it's used for home insulation.

It comes in 4 x 8 sheets with different thicknesses available, so plenty for scenery modeling!
Generally in pink or blue, depending on where you get it.
The 1 inch thick sheets are normally around $20.00.

Google is your friend here!!  ;D ;D ;D

Along the right side where the green car, and the bridge is I'll need to add a backdrop, along with a few more details.
Thanks again

Thank you John,
I now have the lighthouse done and in place, so I'm moving right along. Perhaps moving a little to quickly.  I now have to get the lighthouse wired up for the beacon. Also need to landscape.

Good morning all.  Now I'm undecided if I should scratch build a building for the main dock, or build a kit. I can't seem to come up with a design of a structure to scratch build.  So I will ask for help from all the forum members.  I would like to get suggestions from all you great modelers out there of any kit that might fit the location on the main dock. Working in HO scale, the foot print can not  be any larger than 4"x 7"  I welcome all suggestions.
  Thank you

Sam, Workman's is based on this building outside the center of Georgetown Mass. the footprint of the model is 5 3/8ths x 2''. The loading docks add about an inch  to width. Let me know if your interested and I'll drop one off tomorrow and you can replace it later. Jeff did a build thread under the "New Structure Kits" sub heading. Thank you guys I appreciate all comments, and Dan, thanks for the  info on the Workman and Sons kit, that's a nice looking kit. I think I'm going to use an old I H C plastic kit that I am highly modifying to make a brick building into shake shingles building. still have to shingle the dormer roof, and then it will be ready to place on the diorama. I'll have a picture of it coming up very soon.

Ok guys I think I got it. This is the I H C plastic building that I am going to use as the seafood processing plant that will be on the main dock. This kit was a brick structure that I covered with Campbell shingles, I think it came out fairly well, so I'm going with it.

Good morning everyone,
Sorry for the delay of pictures, but I have been working on making a surf crashing on the rocks at the light house.   I made three attempts at it so far but none of them looked convincing enough for me.  I'm getting closer to what I want and hopefully I'll get pictures of it up soon. Stay tuned.

Nicely done on the lighthouse.

Just a thought here.  I have seen fiberglass fibers used with the catalyst, to make crashing waves.  Also used as waterfall bases.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1228.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee460%2FSam_Novello%2FContestphotos008-1.jpg&hash=aa19e5d0d7788da3918deb1372894898aa6ebaa2) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/Sam_Novello/media/Contestphotos008-1.jpg.html)
This is a great time to get some of this stuff because it's the stuff people use to decorate their house for Halloween, to make it look like it's covered with spiderwebs.  I think the waterfall came out pretty well.   So when I get the crashing surf done, I will surely post pictures
If anyone is  interested in how I made the waterfall just let me know, and I'll write up some instructions and post them here.
  Thanks

Now for something different.  I live in Seattle, so there are no shortages of sea gulls!  Everywhere you want to walk, a seagull has already been there and left its mark.
I really like your harbor scene.
I have seen very few, model bird poo.  As a matter of fact, ONCE!  It was, actually, very effective.  Your harbor scene, will definitely need some. :) ;) ::)!!  But, as the younger generation says...NOT! :) :)

Thanks Dave,
From the far Northwest to the far Northeast,  Your sooo right. There is no shortage of of seagulls.  I am using one building from my old layout on this project, and as you can see there is B-D on the roof.  The new kits I'm building, or built, are not fully weathered yet, but you can bet your bottom dollar there will be Do-Do.   This is New England after-all.  Thanks for picking-up on that.

The wind is just starting to pick up.   Another words I just started to build the surf crashing on the rocks at the light house.    Next I will use Mod Podge gloss over the foam surf material and tease it up some, and after that dries I will finish it off with Invirotex .  I did a few test for this, and this seems to be the best method and looks more realistic.  I'll post the finished scene in a day or two.

Hi Sam.

Just to come in with a slightly different tack.  I like the new wharf a lot.  It adds business and interest.  I like the smaller structure on it, but the larger shed hides a great view of the raised structure behind, which is a very strong visual point.  Can the larger structure be removed, or replaced with something the size of the smaller one, or the smaller one moved to where the bigger one presently is?

Really enjoying your thread, Sam.  That spider web stuff is working a treat for your breaking waves!

Cheers, Mark.

Mark, thank you for your comments,   let me try to explain the scene.    The raised structure is in the foreground, which is the draw bridge tender's station. The new dock would be in the rear of that, so as you look at this scene, you are seeing it from the back side of the diorama.

Good afternoon all,  I made my last application on the breakers to the lighthouse.

Here is where I started.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1228.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee460%2FSam_Novello%2Fwindjuststartedtopickup001.jpg&hash=ac96fb12f1bf4e90aecfd57a66d5f4d0801e7b6a) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/Sam_Novello/media/windjuststartedtopickup001.jpg.html)

Then went to here.

(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1228.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee460%2FSam_Novello%2Fsurfup002.jpg&hash=96584822fdc4f4b677e0f0b2db54e96273a114b7) (http://s1228.photobucket.com/user/Sam_Novello/media/surfup002.jpg.html)

and this is the end result.

The Invirotex hasn't fully cured yet,  as it cures I will be teasing the fibers more until I can get it in a more convincing shape, and have the waves stand more upright.

The waves against the rocks are very convincing! I have a BIS Tidewater Wharf kit which I will add to a corner module for the Hub Division Railroad Club (see www.hubdiv.org) I believe the rock casting was an extra which I have now. When I am ready, I will definitely use your technique for breaking the waves onto the rocks. I am really enjoying your attention to every last detail, including the seagulls and do do.. I cannot wait to see the completed project.
Title: Re: Snug Harbor
Post by: ollevon on December 01, 2014, 06:39:29 PM
Thank you Andy,
That technique is not very hard to do but you  just have to wait until the Invirstex is getting stiff, which will take 6 to 8 hours.  I suggest you  glue down the webbing the night before. The webbing is like micro fiber but really not same. The next MORNING wet it down with Invirotex, wait until that evening  to start teasing it up, using two tweezers one in each hand.
I did mine in two layers, meaning one in front of the other.  So if you wish to do two layers you will need to do one get it done let it cure then do the other.
   Good luck,
  Sam

Sam,

I went back thru and reviewed your thread. I had a question about the attached picture. Are the rails and the bolts/bolt plates suppose to be red or be "rusty" looking? If they are suppose to be red...then great. But if they are suppose to be rusty looking, I suggest the following:

Goto this website:
http://www.bragdonent.com/smpic/item4.htm

Order the 3 different variations of Rust, 1 soot black, 1 grimy gray, 1 old yeller (yellow), 2 different browns and a white. Its going to cost you about $60 but it will be well worth it...and they will probably last you forever.

To apply these powders, you use a brush. They can be applied dry...but to get the really neat looking shades of rust, you going to want to layer the colors. To do that, youre going to want to dip your brush in water first before applying a color. After its applied, wait a few minutes to let it start to dry...then apply the next color. The same way, dip your brush into the water and then into the container of powder. When the powders dry, they can be brushed off and you can start over again if you don't like the look.

Just an idea...
Alan

Hi Alan,
No, they are not supposed to be red at all.  Thanks for that observation,  and also for the information. I don't have that brand of powders, I have the Bar-Mills powders;  Are the not the same?
I will change it though. I don't want it to be red.  Hopefully it has something to do with the lighting.
  Thanks again,
  Sam

Sam,

Yep, it could just be the lighting. In regards to Bar Mills powders, I would assume they are the same...Ive never used them before. What you're looking for is the various shades of rust.

Alan,
The more I look at it, the more I think your right,  the color I used for rust is a little to consistent.  It's just paint only, maybe I can get more variations by add powders to it in the way you suggested. I'll work on that and then post a photo of it.

Trying to get the rust color to not look so red.

After Alan made the suggestion to use powders over the base coat, here's what I come up with.

Sam...

Consider this...

Start with a base color that is not red....... eg. rail brown.  Then add rust powders to suit.

Also consider that what you see may not match what the camera and posting to this site sees.

see ya

Sam,

Definitely looks better. I would use some Gray or a little Black to tone down the "red/orange" color.

Good afternoon everyone,  Alan had suggested to me to post an update on my diorama. These pictures are all I have of the first coat of Mod Podge so far.  I am now working on the 3rd coat which hasn't dried yet. , I will most likely end out with 10 coats of mod Podge. and then a coat of gloss sealer of some sort.

Thanks for sharing...what type of brush did you use to apply the Modge Podge. Dave Frary recommends using a Mop brush but that always seems to produce bubbles on me.

Alan,  I just been using a cheap china bristle brush.  I didn't get any bubbles at all on the first and second coat, the 3rd coat is still drying. I'll keep you posted.

Good afternoon gang,
I been working on the water trying to get that rough choppy look to the inner harbor, this first picture didn't have the look I was looking for,so I played around with it a while, and the second picture  is lot more of what I want, so I'll stick with that. Now I just need to add a few more details to the diorama and it will be done and ready for the Expo.

Hi Folks, well the diorama is pretty much done, so while I'm waiting for the next two weeks or so for the Expo, I thought I just add a few more details like these seagulls flying around the lighthouse and a few more of the buildings.

Good afternoon all,
I want to give everyone who voted for my diorama, a huge THANK YOU.   I just can't express  how much it means to me.   The other high point of my Expo experience was meeting all you fine craftsman and modelers. I'm just so glad I had that opportunity, I also feel I even made friends with some of you, and I want to thank Mike for the  " Meet & Greet" segment he put together which made that happen:   ( by the way Mike, thanks for the T-shirt )  That was a nice touch.
I want to give a big THANK YOU to Jaime for posting all those great pictures,  and I forgive you for calling me Ron because, I made a mess of your name as well.
I plan on getting some pictures together as to where my diorama will go on my layout and I will post some from time to time as I move along.  You haven't seen the last of Snug Harbor yet.
Now I can say Thank You friends and keep in touch. You too Raymo.

Sam, what a work of art.  I followed the build and I must say,the waves splashing against the rocks look real.  I can almost smell the salt air.  And congratulations for your well deserved award at the Expo.  From what I saw of the pictures posted here, you were up against some pretty stiff competition.  Wish I'd been there to see all of the fine exhibits.  Alas, Colorado is a bit far away.  Maybe I should look into starting a show like that here for the modelers here.

When I first saw it I was transfixed by how much content was in the harbour scene. I took an excessive number of pictures of the diorama to study and try to implement some day.
