Stangel (www.stangel.pl) offers a range of HO and O gauge models of mainly germanic structures. I bought four kits at a recent show in Utrecht to build for my new "Norge" layout. The beautiful norwegian town of Alesund has some stunning Art Deco architecture. These kits remind me of some of those buildings, so here goes..............
The kit comprises of cardboard laser cut parts. some thick acrylic for window glass and some paper tiles for the roof.

I have painted the main walls of the structure. I used full strength acrylic paints to cut down on moisture and painted both sides of each part to avoid any warping.
Mike
Looks great. You do wonderful work with paper products.
Following along Mike , I bought a few N-scale kits from them at Utrecht show.
Neat looking structure Mike.....I'll be looking in. :)
Thanks for your very kind comments Curt.
Mike
Hi Jan,
Long time no speak. Yes I forgot that they also offered them in N. They are pretty fragile in HO so good luck.
Mike
Thanks for following Greg. I think they are cute.

The doors are made up of two elements. The paper used is very shiny so I had to give them three coats of paint.
The roof for the tower is a bit of a problem. The parts were too thick to fit properly and the holes for the parts were the wrong size and shape.
I cut off the tabs and finagled instead.................
The windows are very fragile. So I decided to spray the parts with a white primer. This has the effect of giving the mullions a little more strength. I discarded the kit's piece of acetate. IMHO it is too thick and I think it would be touch and go if there is enough to actually cover the windows. I used some thinner stuff that I had in stock.
The first part of the window frame is peel and stick. This can delaminate and I needed to use canopy glue on a frame or two.The second part of the frame is just card and needs to be glued with PVA.
Mike
Unique (for this side of the pond) looking structure Mike. I really enjoy following along with your builds of these kits. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Bob I'm learing as I go..................
The kit instructions are in German - not my first langauge. However they do not seem that encompassing. There is no step by step.
So the first wall shown was assembled wrongly. I glued the windows in first and then hit some snags.................
Here is second wall for the parts to be fitted.
The correct step is fit the window sill first. It has a little nick in the centre which will fit to the window frame. Then add the outside decoration which will add strength to the sill. Then add the window from behind centreing on the nick in the sill. Voila............
Mike
The shop has three floors, most of which are visible through the large windows. I decided to look ahead and use the Scalescenes interior detail kit to dress up the interior.Carpets for the floors and a few bookcases....
Mike
The tower roof was a trial. The four pieces of card to form the roof were much too thick and would not be coaxed into being glued to the wooden frame even with super glue. In the end I formed new pieces on thinner card and eventually was able to glue it together
Here is a picture of the walls erected..............
Then I tried to offer up the tower roof to the top of the tower but the main roof does not allow this..............I have decided to suspend the build for now so I can figure out a solution. Also the tower roof is too big for the tower.................oooh!
Mike
Really nice job on the walls Mike.
Thanks Curt, I think the walls look great but I have just got to figure out the problems with the roof.
Here is one I made earlier. I have another two to make so I will press on while I am cogitating..............
Mike
They look great , very neat kits.
Hey Mike:
All is looking well.
Karl
Thanks Jan & Karl for your kind comments. The kits are very nice but there are a few little issues. But nothing major..........
Mike
Hey Mike:
You are quite welcome. I love following your builds.
Karl
Moving on to the third building.....................
Mike
Mike,
Those are some very nice looking buildings. Well done my friend, well done.
Tom ;D
Not me Tom. The kit manufacturer is very good. They really look like the structures I am trying to replicate.
Mike
The shops/houses have been built. The tower was a pain. The part should have been 4.5 ft square. As supplied it was 7.5 ft square and much too large to fit on top of the tower. I eventually cut it down to the correct size. In doing so I ended with a card mess which would have been impossible to shingle. So I added red DAS clay to the what I had left and the scribed some horizontal lines in before painting it acrylic. The main roof had to be cut to accomodate the tower. I used Northeastern fishscale shingles on three of the structures as they are very common in Alesund, Norway.
These kits are very nice but because of the paucity of instructions and drawings which show where the parts go but not in what order, they are not for the beginner. What I have learnt is the following:
a) Leave parts in the sheets until you need them. Some parts are not needed as some of the sheets appear to be generic.b) Fit the window sills before adding the windows as it helps to line them up correctly.c) The roofs are supplied invariably too large and need to be trimmed to fit.d) The doors need to be glued in higher than ground level in order to leave room for the steps.
Mike
Nice looking street of structures.
Jeff
Nice kits nicely done, Mike. Persist! ~mike c
Thanks Jeff and Miike C for your comments, it is much appreciated.
Mike :) :) :) :)
