EXPO 2015 Steams into Scranton.
The next EXPO will be a must attend event. The 2013 Expo is now a recent memory. A great time was had by almost 400 modelers, clinicians and vendors some of which came from as far as India, Indonesia and Greece!
The next Expo is already in the works, and as some of you may know we have rethought the timing of the show so as to not conflict with other fall shows, lower the costs of travel due to the time of year and not have to compete for venue space in a busy fall season of weddings and other events. Given the new date, there will be no Expo until March 2015.
So we are very excited to announce the time and place of the 2015 Expo! It will be held in Scranton, Pennsylvania and the Hilton Hotel just down the block from Steamtown National Park, March 26, 27, 28! It's a fantastic location packed with inspiration for modelers. Steamtown has a vast collection of rolling stock including a large roundhouse and working turntable. Just next door is the Trolley Museum. And both Steamtown and the trolley museum will be offering excursions.
By late January we will begin registration at the Amherst Railway Show in Springfield. We'll also be making some exciting announcements about some well known modeler clinicians never before at the Expo!
We are working on tons of new clinics, great tours and of course World Class Structure Modeling.
Stay Tuned!!!

Scramblin' to Scranton
Though it's 15 months away, we'll be spending all that time to make it the best Expo yet. We've got lots of things in the works so check back here often to get the latest Expo news.

Jimmy told me about this last week at Marlboro. The hotel is in great spot downtown within walking distance to Steamtown or it's just a short drive down the street. Should I place my dessert order now for it to be ready in 15 months. ;D Dan R.
Does Scranton have an airport that Raymo can find to pick me up?

Mike, Scranton airport is a small one but Delta ought to fly a regional jet there. I believe it is Wilkes Barre airport.

Did you hear the news Emma. What's that Will. Those train modeling people are coming again.
Let's pray they stay in their hotel this time...Last time one showed up measuring buildings, taking photos and drawing pictures and stuff....what's that all about.
Someone should show them train modeling people this is how to build a structure, not with sticks, paper and glue!
Doug
NO Amish in this part of PA I think!!!
But there is plenty of Train related stuff
Steam-town is 2 blocks away
And on their property ti the Lackawanna County ( Electric City) Trolley Museum
Also near by is a coal museum w/ a decent into a old coal shaft
I suppose I'll go. If I have to. :)

It's going to be an early 65th birthday present to me, my wife has agreed. All I need to do now is find a hotel that takes dogs and allows me to leave her in the room. (STARR! my white German Shepherd...not Colleen I know how some of you think...)
I believe the hotel is pet friendly. I checked.

Robert- You are the best contest chairman I've seen in forty years or so of entering them, but I have a request. Even though EXPO 2015 seems forever and a day away, for those planning dioramas etc., it would be nice to know what the model contest categories will be- 4x4, 8x8, 12x12......? Also, what dimensions/ limits for big and little dioramas, rolling stock categories? Maybe at one of your next planning meetings and let us know here. Thanks, you guys are really getting the hang of this convention thing!
While I will miss attending this, (especially when it's closer) the new show dates will preclude me from ever attending due to work related demands. But I will be there in spirit.

Te only changes as of right now will be:
Drop/Eliminate Module Category
Drop/ Eliminate Photo Contest
Size Limit on Big Dio either 24"X 36"" or 36"x 36"
Please give me input here on the ForumThanks and Merry Christmas
It's too bad the module category is gone. But given there were no entries in 2013 I can understand.
It's difficult to do a photo category for a show the size of Expo. I don't recall ever being more than a dozen entries at any of the CSS shows nor Expo. On the other hand, at the National Narrow Gauge Convention there can be well over 50 entries.
Limiting the big diorama category to a certain size will be a sore spot with some. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I like seeing all the great work brought to the shows. Perhaps modelers can be limited to a total square footage of all their diorama entries. You know, something like 150 square inches total when all their diorama entries are totaled up:
- 4 x 4 = 16
- 10 x 10 = 100
- grand total of 116 so modeler is within limits
Jaime
How about a "Quickest Waitstaff" category? Winner gets better tips. :)

Good to know. Tom and I were planning on building a module to bring with us. I guess we'll shift our attention elsewhere. :D I have an idea for a Big Dio but I'm still in the research phase so I'll be keeping an eye out for the final rules as they pertain to the size.

Difficult as in only 2 or 3 people ever enter. And, they enter the same photos each year.
Jaime
Robert- You guys are way out front again! My two cents worth- I think the limit on size is a good one, and 2 ft x 3 ft is probably good for the large diorama category. The NNGC went to this last year, and though initially I didn't like it I found it made a lot of sense as most hotel display tables are two ft wide. Larger dioramas would have to get their own display table and perhaps more access. Also, larger than 2x3 would preclude any entries other than those that could be driven to the contest.
Also, since there is no module category, if the Florida guys bring the Sundance Central, could it be entered as a "big diorama" if there is no limit?
And my last input- I'd like to see the return of the 12x12, probably in place of the 8x8. I think there were only a few entries in 8x8, and as I recall the 12x12 was a popular category in Lancaster. 12x12 would also allow the O scale and larger folks a chance.

That's why others don't ...same entries, same winners, every year. As I said before the EXPO in Lancaster in 2012, winners should not be able to enter the same ol', same 'ol, year after year. New and fresh, give us beginners a chance to compete.
I believe anyone could have competed with the past Expo photo contest entries. But I understand where you're coming from.
What I see as difficult for the photo contest is to get enough BUILDERS interested in NOT building and instead taking photos. The Expo draws builders more than any other crowd. At the NMRA and NNGC there are as many prototype rail fans as there are modelers. And rail fans take LOTS of pictures.
That is what I meant by difficult.
I'm about to express unpopular opinion so be warned.
Why should the best builders in the hobby step out of a contest so a "beginner" can "compete"? I go to Expo to view the best of the best in the contest room. I mean, who would go to the Super Bowl to watch their church league football teams compete?

I understand your concerns.
And that is why I keep adjusting rules & categorizes
We have a rule now that states if any entry takes 1, 2 or 3 place they CAN NOT enter it in the contest again.
I can tell you this no enter won this year that placed at last years EXPO.
We had someone that enter a similar photo that placed last year , but it was a new photo taken from a different angle.
Technically it is a different enter. ( Really a loop hole in the rules)
Now I would not do that and neither would you probably.
So if you have a specific entry you know about please bring it to my attention.
Also lets remember this is a Hobby and we are to enjoy it.
Thanks

I'm not the competitive type. But, if I were to enter a contest I'd do it to see how well could I placed against the best of the best. And if I returned in subsequent years I'd want to bring an entry that was better than my last. But that is just me. I'm sure there are many that enter because they love collecting trophies. Also, the $1,000 prize is an incentive.
It was mentioned earlier elsewhere that maybe there ought to be a section for display only. Entries not wishing to be judged but wishing to be seen. Maybe one of those can be added to the contest room or show floor. I could bring some of my late buddy Pieczyk's models to display.
Jaime
I like Jaime's idea of a "display area"....and maybe as a little incentive for folks to bring items, maybe a simple "Honorable Mention" award by popular vote.....

At our Logging show any model that won a trophy in years past is not allowed to take a prize again. So we always have new models.
We average around 80 models entered in the contest and only have 150 people register for the show. And these are not your average models, one of the guys took 5 firsts and a second in the seven classes he entered at the Seattle Narrow Gauge convention. He bring in new models every year.

Jaime, How big was the biggest dio? I was planing to get a 4 ft x 3 ft. piece. Was it bigger than that ? I can only go as big as what I can fit in my car, to transport.

Real nice work. Can't wait to see the next stage of this project.

Thanks Jerry. I'm already working on a few things like docks & boats, I might even use some of the structures I have left over from the old layout. Now I just have to wait for the W. Springfield show to pick up some Gator board for the base, not sure what size to get though. Anyone have any suggestions?

It was almost as large as a module. And it was very tall. I'd say 4 by 3 is plenty big.
