Afternoon All,
I started out with the hydrocal walls by spraying them light gray. Afterwards I used wet weathering powders to randomly paint stones then did a heavy (intentional) wash of Tamiya German Gray (grimy black). I want this kit to look very dirty but not falling apart.
And the side walls.
Great looking stone building.....I'll be looking in Curt. :)
I'll be watching, Curt.
This kit looks like it would sit nicely with South River Modelworks Thonedike mills.
Cheers, Mark.
Looks cool!
When you say, "FOS Hendrix Style Foundry"... Have you got an Ed Fulasz "Old Stone Warehouse"?
--Rich
Greg, Mark and Rich thank you.
Rich- Actually you are correct. The instructions talk about him. The kit has wooden add on walls and rooms along with a bunch of stuff on the roof.
Great start Curt. I really like the looks of this kit. It'll be fun to follow along with your build. The hydrocal cast walls are a nice break from wood every now and then. ;)
Nice looking walls. Did you seal them after using the powders and before the wash?
Jeff
Yep..mighty fine-looking walls, Curt. To me, there's just something special about masonry walls cast in hydrocal.
Hey Curt:
The walls look just beautiful.
Karl
I got this kit but haven't decided where it'll go. So I'm watching this intently. Your stone looks good so far!
dave
Beautiful coloring on the stone!
Jerry
Thank you Bob, Jeff, Vince, Karl, Dave, and Jerry for your kind words.
Jeff- I did not seal the colors because they were very bright compared to the gray base coat. A lot of the color washed out but I was afraid of it looking cartoony.
I did spend several hours on the build today but no pictures so I'll do a update in the next couple of days.
Curt, the color on those walls look super in close ups. I'll be interested in how well those interlocking joints fit together. That is a lot of engineering to get around those corner joints, but looks like it will be worth the trouble.
--Opa George
Thank you George.
Over the last couple of days I put in the windows and "glass" in the hydrocal walls. I took the plunge and put the walls together busting off 2 of the "fingers". They were easily glued in place after the fact. The prep trimming wasn't bad but it's a really tight fit. I shingled the roof and built the upper structure (on roof), shingled it and weathered the roof. The roof structure isn't centered because of a billboard that goes on the roof.
I don't know if I mentioned before I found a stone ramp missing from the kit and I notified Doug about it via Email. Today I discovered a roof card missing but I made my own.

And finally.
Crap on a cracker.....you've blown past "Greg Speed" and have hit "Warp Speed". :o Great work Curt..... 8)
Awesome looking stone walls.
what Jan said, well done!
Mike :)
Very impressive I love those walls. Wonderful job.
Jerry
When you say, "FOS Hendrix Style Foundry"... Have you got an Ed Fulasz "Old Stone Warehouse"?
--Rich
when Ed Fulasz retired, the rights to his kits were obtained by Jimmy Deignan who produced them for a number of years. When he decided to stop production, the rights, and I assume, molds, were transferred to Doug Foscale. That's why you see some "Fulasz style" hydrocal show up from time to time in a few of Doug's kits.
Anyway, nice job Kurt.
geo2rge aka timbob60
Hey Curt:
beautiful job on that one. Love your stone work.
Karl
Thank you Greg, Jan, Mike, Jerry, Timbob60, and Karl for your kind words.
Today I added the details to the stone building. I still need to decide whether to put a exterior light over the yet to be built loading dock. I don't like the idea of making that large a hole in the hydrocal. There are several wood add on rooms that are next up on the agenda.
Today after spraying a couple of parts I accidently left them in the garage and after searching the house, garage, inside garbage, outdoor garbage I finally found them in the recycling. I most of folded them up in the newspaper I was recycling ::)
The billboard legs are very fragile (I busted one) and I had to shorten the 2 inside legs. This is probably due to the roof not being perfectly applied...oh well.
Curt,
I just took a few minutes to catch up on this thread. I want to echo the comments you have already received. Looks great, nice fit and finish, and very realistic coloring on the walls.
Great job Curt! The stone work is fabulous. This will be a really nice addition to the new layout. :D
Curt
Very nice work - love the stonework.
Curt,
I agree with the others, the stone work looks great and natural.
Well done.
Tom ;D
Thank you Jerry, Bob, John, and Tom for your kind words.
Today I was doing prep work on the wooden walls. I still need to add glass, shades, and weather the walls before assembly. No pictures. We have all seen these steps many times.
Curt,
Good looking build. Glad to see someone bought, and is building the kit named in my honor.....
Loren....
Hey Curt:
Beautiful job on the stonework. Like the roof top billboard also. Great job on the model.
Karl
Curt,
Nice coloring work on this plaster structure.
Tommy
Afternoon All,
Thank you Loren (don't be a stranger), Karl, and Tommy for your kind words.
Today I built the 3 add on wood structures. The one on the left has the loading dock built around it. The center is the entrance to the office and the right one goes on the left end of the hydrocal building. It has small gaps when put together so I have to decide to add trim pieces or make it a stand alone building (requires a rear wall)...I haven't decided yet.
Afternoon,
Today I finished the kit until it goes on a layout. I built the platform and ramp (what a pain). In the directions Doug said he made his legs for the platform 5/8" depending on scenery. Since mine will be flat I went with his length to discover that the legs were 1/4" too long for the doors that the platform wraps around. I ended up getting a piece of scrap Styrofoam and painting it aged concrete. Another mistake I made was using 2x6 strip wood on top of the platform instead of 1x10. I just misread the directions, but I like the way it came out and luckily I had enough in my wood strip drawer to finish the project with 2x6.
I sent a follow up text message to Doug a couple of days ago about the missing stone ramp and he said it was going in the mail so I'm waiting on that. I still have a few details to paint like 55 gallon drums etc.
The wood structure to the right is not attached until placed on the layout.
Missing the stone ramp.
The platform and ramp won't be attached until on the layout. This is the wood structure I had to add Styrofoam to on the bottom.
The wood structure not attached. I decided to put trim on the edges against the stone for a better fit.
Looks good Curt.....now onto the layout. 8)
Greg thanks. I'm working on the last Walthers kit before starting.
Which one?
Red Wing Mill but I put on signage for Centennial Mill.
