Title: Bar Mills - The Barn At Jackson Corners
Post by: Larry.h on May 15, 2020, 11:58:52 AM
My old western town will need a carriage / blacksmith shop. The Barn At Jackson Corners should be a good starting point. I want a building that has been in service for a couple of decades, but was never painted.

After coloring the walls with Prismacolor markers, I found that the doors in the kit did not look like I wanted, so I scratch built some to suit.

Larry, really nice weathering to start that build.  I like your technique for making it look like individual board construction.  The difference in weathering from the top of the wall to the bottom is also very convincing.

Looks great, Larry.

I agree - the weathering looks very nice.  Its also a refreshing colouring with the red tinge.

Cheers, Mark.

GP, PRR modeler and Mark , glad you could join. Appreciate the compliments.

The walls are test fit in this picture. All the walls are going together as planned.  I added more bracing than the plans call for.

Looks really nice. Do you have a old west layout?

Carl,
I belong to an HOn3 module group here in Denver. I'm building the Cimarron, Colorado helper yard in 1886. So far there are twenty two structures on the module set. A mix of kit and scratch built. Once the scenery is complete, I'll be building another module set that represents a Colorado mountain mining town.

After a few days away from the bench, I was able to get back to the barn. Here we have the barn walls glued together and the roofs test fit.

I finally got time to get back to the barn. The roof is done and a few of the details have been added. I built the diorama base from masonite. Signs, weathering and more details in the near future.

Larry,

Looks great.  I really like the "damage" to the bottom of the walls along the eaves.  Excellent modeling!

I'm going to have to give that marker technique a shot.  It turned out very nice.

I endorse the use of markers. From Sharpie extra fine to the high end ones. The color selection is endless. Very useful even on stained wood after cutting and you are left with a white end. Touch up, highlighting. Many uses. To achieve the bottom dirt look, just press and let the stain up up the board. Or down. Last forever. Most have a fat and narrow tip.

Nice work, Larry.  I like the horseshoe above the door--my parents always had one nailed above their house door for luck (turned up so the luck doesn't run out).
