Hi All:
Well this is where we find out if I'm any good at this or not. This is George's 2nd kit. The brick walls are on blotter paper which is warped so I'm gonna have to make new walls and roof parts. We shall see how it goes.
Karl
This should be fun! ;)
$4.95. Ah the good old days. ;D
Karl,
You should get yourself some Monster Modelworks brick sheets and use those instead. :D
Frank
Hey Bob:
Glad to have you along.
Karl
Hey Frank:
I have some prety nice brick sheet I'm using. Not sure who made them. Should have my first wall done sone and will post A photo.
Karl
I'll be following.
Talk about a moldy oldie.....i'll be looking in Karl. :)
Hey Curt And Greg:
thanks for following along.
Karl
Hey Guys:
here's my new brick walls.
Karl
Very nice colorations. Did you use the paper?
Hey Curt:
Thank. Yes it is paper brick paper. Don't know who makes it as it had no company name on it. Glad you like it.
Karl
Karl
Thanks for posting this. Since the first time I saw these on the F&SM I wondered how George got that texture.
And as always I like what you're doing here.
--Rich
Hey Rich:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.
Thanks:
Karl
Hi All:
The first floor is finished. When I looked at these photos I said wow I have to do the windows over. However they look just fine except for the pics. Maybe I'll try photographing them again.
Karl
Hey Guys:
PS: George Sellios called me today and said how much he liked what I'm doing with this kit.
Karl
Hi All:
Here's A few progress shots. Hope it looks ok. Does this look OK? I don't know why the windows look so black from the A&I. They don't show up at all like that in person. Neither does the door.
Karl
Very nice Karl and a nice compliment.
Hey Curt:
Thanks much appreciated.
Karl
That brick stuff looks quite good. Can't wait to see the rest of this come together.
dave
Karl,
Very nice job for sure.
Tom ;D
Hey Dave and tom:
Thanks guys much appreciated and glad to have you along.
Karl
Hey guys:
started working on the upper floor part of the structure only to find out one of the walls was wrong. It should have 1 window & 1 door. Had to make A new one. Here's A photo.
Karl
Karl,
What a classic kit. Like your new brickwork.
Still have a B/W photo someplace here of that kit build from almost 50 years ago...
Tommy
Hey Tommy:
Thanks for the compliment. Post the B&W photo here if you'd like. Here's A few progress photos.
Karl
hey guys:
Here;s another pic. Lighting has also been added.
Karl
Very nice Karl. The green goes well with the bricks.
Karl,
As usual, it looks great.
Regarding your comment about the A/I looking dark on the windows. In my experience the camera is very sensitive to reflected light. A friend gave me a small station that he had scratch built that had been damaged in storage. None of the Floquil I had was even close to matching the original color. I mixed some acrylics and touched everything up. To the naked eye the building looked like the paint was all original. I took a couple photos and they looked like the paint was ring streaked and speckled. After a little research I learned it most likely was due to the reflected light reacting differently to the two types of paint. My guess is that is what happened with the windows.
Your usual high standards.
Jerry
Hey Curt:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Jerry beach:
Very interesting. Thanks much.
Karl
Hey Jerry:
Thanks much appreciated.
Karl
Karl,
I missed the beginning of this thread and am catching up. I love seeing the old kits come to life. The brick treatment you used is beautiful. Second story also looking excellent.
--Opa George
Hey George:
thanks buddy the compliment is very much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
Here's A progress shot. I finished up the roof and added the tool box. As can be seen I don't use folded paper over the ridged. I use separate cap shingles. Lots of them on this kit. Over a 100. I don't know whose shingles they are as there is no label on them. Hope it looks OK.
Karl
When I just saw the title and FSM kit 30 your going to build it, I thought , this is going to be an adventure, why don't I read this to see what the maestro Karl comes up with.
Well I have to say, you made it seriously better and those shingles , whoever produced them BIS ? really finish the structure off.
Great job
mike lynch............HAIRBALL
Hey Mike:
thanks for the great compliment. The rain gutters are now being cut and installed.
Karl
Karl, I recognize those shingles. They're from "Northeastern Scale Models", a spin-off from Northeastern Scale Lumber. NESM was eventually bought out by NESL, who I think still uses some of this paper for their pre-assembled shingle sheets. (I used to buy unassembled 8 1/2 x 11 sheets from NESM.) They found this construction paper that had an unique pattern that looks pretty good as slate shingles, with a bit of weathering. I've used them on several large mill projects on my previous layout. Suggest weathering them by stippling/scrubbing various pastels/chalks.
dave
Looks great as usual Karl.
Fantastic as always. I also love the individual ridge cap shingles.
Looks great, Karl!
Cheers, Mark.
Hey Dave:
I couldn't tell you. But thanks for the info. I kinda like them the way they are.
Karl
Hey Curt, Bob D and Mark:
Thanks for the great compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Did A little more work today. Chimney, Smoke stack, and rain gutters are added to the roof. Also added oil tank and the vines to the walls. Oil tank is on front wall. you can just about see it in the photo.
Karl
Looks awesome Karl.
nailed it, crushed it like a Barlinka grape , spiked the build. !!! Vines and signs just right.
Am surprised George never did an update on this as a newer kit with his new techniques and lead brick walls, laser cut wood walls.
I would like to scratch build this in O and use " trains of texas " brick walls heavily distressed & warped and builders in scale real copper raised seam roofing.
mike..........HAIRBALL
Hey Curt and Hairball:
Thanks for the great compliments. Much appreciated. I'm working on the stars now. It's probably the most difficult part of the kit.
Karl
Looks great Karl! Brings back some fond memories of being amazed by the ads for these older FSM kits when they ran in MRR and/or RMC.
Hey Bob:
Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl.
Hey All:
As they say in Germany Es ist fertig (it is finished). This kit was quite A job but I like how it came out. I did not follow the kit instructions for the stairs. I used stair template drawing from another FSM kit. Here's a picture. Hope you guys like how it turned out.
Karl
Very nice, Karl. I love the detail -- not just the stairs but the individual shingles for the roof corners, the meter, the gutter, coloring of the brick work, the vines. A seemingly simple building but so much to look at.
Beautiful modeling Karl. I love the stairs.
Great job Karl.....the finished kit looks great. 8)
Hey Vince, Curt and Greg:
Wow guys thanks for all the great compliments. Very much appreciated.
Karl
Agreed. Karl, this looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing this vintage gem and showing what great results are possible with old kits.
--Opa George
Karl,
You took that original kit to the 2020's with the new brick and the shingle work...think you earned some forever stamps too !
Tommy
Hey George & Tommy:
Thanks so much fro the great compliments. Much appreciated.
Karl
This came out really nicely, Karl.
I especially like the hip and ridge tiles.
Cheers, Mark.
Karl
It looks great. It has been awhile since I've seen one of these built.
Nice looking tower, Karl. Good to see these vintage FSM kits built up and improved as you have done.
Jeff
Hey Mark, John and Jeff:
thanks for the great compliments guys. Much appreciated. Yeah it was A challenge due to having to make all new parts for the bottom walls and the roof.
Karl
