Hey Guys:
Was going to build A lighthouse kit but decided to finish up The FSM kits I have for my friend. This one looks like quite A job also but it will be fun. Hope you enjoy. Will post pics shortly.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Here's pics of the box.
Karl
Of course I'll be following.
Me too.
I love seeing these old kits....$9.95. Hehe.
Count me in!
--Opa George
If all these FSM builds keep up, Jimmy might have to rename the forum.....I'll be looking in Karl. :)
Hey Guys:
thanks for following along. Here's a few progress pics. the unfinished end walls and one that I have finished. Colors Are Floquil Depot Buff and Ace hardware Red Oxide Primer.
Karl
Oooo. I like the stone work. Is that what came with the kit? I thought I remembered seeing pictures where the masonry was something that looked more like pea gravel. Or maybe I'm thinking of the John Allen special.....
Great color combination and, like Vince, I'm curious about the stonework as well. That looks like an upgrade.
Great colors. I especially like the round window. It says early 1900's to me.
Nicely done. I never liked those little rounded stones that were included. I opted for Holgate & Reynolds stone sheet instead.
Hey Guys:
Thanks for all the great compliments. No that stone does not come with the kit. It's something I found in my pile of stuff that I bought somewhere along the line. Not sure who makes it.
Karl
Looking' Good! I'm going to have to hunt down a FSM Kit, they look like a ton of fun. Looking forward to the progress on this build.
-Steven
Hey Steven:
Thanks for the great compliment. Much appreciated.
Karl
Hi All:
Just finished up the walls today. Here's A pic. Hope you like how they turned out.
Karl
Looks good Karl.....the stone looks much better than the pebbles that come with the kit, but I have yet to figure out why the stone is on the side of the building in the first place.
Look great Karl.
Hey Greg:
I will assume the stone is the foundation.
Karl
Hey Curt:
Thanks very much appreciated.

That's what I though years ago when I built mine, but after some years in the business I've learned different. The only explanation I can come up with is that it is supposed to represent a decorative veneer. That doesn't make much sense, given the fact that most railroads would not spend money on unnecessary decorative stuff for their utility type structures. Oh well.....who knows? ???
Hey Greg:
You may be right. Who know lots of RR's in this country. We sure don't know what they all did. Anything is possible.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Here's A few progress pics. Walls are assembled, rails and wood floor are laid.
Karl
Hi All:
A friend of mine laser cut new skylights for me. Here's A photo of the parts and the bottom right of an assemble one. I think they are pretty cool.
Karl
Hi Guys:
Here are the 4 skylights assembled. Took me about 1/2 an hour.
Karl
Hi All:
Working on the rear set of doors to be added to the engine house Maybe pics later this afternoon.
Karl
Hi All:
Here's A few progress pics. Added the wooden column between the 2 front doors and engine house doors to the rear door. Here's A few pics. I guess I'll work on the interior next.
Karl
Karl,
As usual, beautiful modeling. And, seems like I say this every time, love your color choices.
Beautiful color choice and modeling.
Hey Jerry and Curt:
Thanks much for the great compliments. Much appreciated. Next is the interior. I'm building the work benches. Not many castings with this one so I will have to supply my own. Not A problem as I have lots of them.
Karl
Very nice, Karl. Curt and Jerry are right about your color choices. It just looks so good. You are the champion on that level.
--Opa George
Hey George:
thank you very much. Your comments are very much appreciated.
Karl
I missed this one Karl.
Your usual standard of fine modeling. And those perfect color choices!
Jerry
HeyJerry:
Thanks for the great compliment. Much appreciated as always.
Karl
Hey Guys:
got a little more work done today. Added the work Benches, signs and vines to the outside of the walls. Hope it looks OK.
Karl
Looks great Karl.
The vines look great, it reminded me that I need to add some to my J. Keen build.
-Steven
Hey Curt & Steven:
Hey Guys thanks for the great compliments. Much appreciated. Glad you like the vines Steven.
Thanks much you two:
Karl
Hey Guys:
Got a fair amount of work done today with it's Laser cut skylights. Got the Main, cupola and cupola roof installed today. Roof is painted with Rust-Oleum green primer. Cupola is stained with A&I. Rain gutters are painted with Ace hardware Red Oxide Primer as is the rest of the red trim. Roof is dry-brushed with Apple Barrel #20526 Country Grey. Hope it looks OK.
Karl
Roofing paper looks great! I'll probably steal that approach for the roof on my little roundhouse.
dave
Karl....... great build.......... cool colors.
I only used aniline dye on mine. I too was a 9.95 buyer in 1969. In fact I was still in Viet Nam and a friend was kit collecting for me while I was gone. Ten bux for a kit ! ! ! ! ! Holy comoly ! ! ! What we know now ! ! !
When I first built this (40 years ago) I was never really happy with the roof as it was too much of one color and yelled really loud. Also I moved about 30 years ago to creating scenes on my railroad so this was a no brainer.
Those boys have been working on that roof for 30 years. Must not be a union job.
Again Karl...... pretty cool build.
see ya

Another great build by you Karl.
Hey Dave & Bob:

Karl
Karl,
The engine house looks fantastic. Even the older FSM kits still look great when built.
Tom ;D
Hey Tom:
Thanks buddy much appreciated.
Karl
He Guys:
Oh well as the say in Germany Es ist fertig. It is finished.
Karl
Looks nice,
BTW, how did you attach the doors to the engine house? Do they operate or are they just stationary ??
Asking for a friend ;)
--Paul
Hey Paul:
Thanks. The doors are glued to the door openings.
Karl
Hey Guys:
Ok it wasn't quite finished. Wasn't going to add the base and the outside service pit but changed my mind as it really adds to the structure.
Karl
Great job , as usual , you make modeling look so easy.
What a jewel. Good as always.
Excellent final results, Karl.
--Opa George
Hey Jan, Bob & George:
Thanks for the great compliments. So much appreciated.
Great job Karl.....enjoyed the build. 8)
Karl............ Great finish to the engine house.
But have you considered an interior.
Below is one that I put in mine about 30 years ago. The original house is a complete lift off so I had to put a secondary structure inside that represents the beam structure of the house when put back on.
