Off we go.
As of today, I'm starting up my 2021 Winter Build Challenge.
It's Gordon Novelty Co from FOS Scale.
This building is becoming a seafood restaurant on my Rocky Point Harbor F&SM tribute.
It will stand in place of the "Izzy Fish Co" building, with this kit being chosen as it somewhat resembles that structure.
I have big plans for this kit, so I can't wait to get started on my first build challenge!
More soon.
EDIT: uploading two of John/Tom's photos of Izzy Fish for reference.
Great kit, Craig!
I have a very similar five story structure to scratchbuild based on an existing building in Wellington. The bottom street front is either a butcher or barber, depending on the year.
I'll be watching on as you progress with this one.
Cheers, Mark.
Groovy!
Who doesn't love a FOS kit ?!
Jaime
Nice pick!
Thanks all! Doug makes great kits and this has always been one of those stand outs for me.
I'll be following.
Got a whole bunch done last night.
I got my walls braced, 1/16 trim stained and walls also. I'm using Hunterline Blue Grey and a tiny hint of Driftwood (especially on edges). The covered stairway wall is pure Driftwood with "Golden Brown" stain on its edges.
I left them overnight under weights to dry flat (this morning they were).
As they were drying I still had some time on my clock, so I pulled out my mini-lathe and started work on a little detail that I shall reveal later...
More soon!
Nice coloring your off to a good start.
Jerry
Thanks Jerry. Trying to match Izzy Fish Co color as much as possible (as seen in original post)
I think that's enough of the stain for now and maybe some pastel chalks...
Good start! Great choice for the build challenge too. ;D
Thanks for following along Bob! Can't wait to keep progressing with this one.
Great start Craig! Nice choice of stains.
Thanks Mark!
Got a bunch more done last night, including adding trim, signs and some laser board details. Windows and additional weathering tonight!
Hey Rusty:
Looking just great so far. I scratch buil I scratch built the Izzy Fish Co. years ago.
Oh, I'd love to see that! Do you have any photos you could share — even if by email?
Craig,
I'm in on this journey as well.
I've never thought of changing A&I for the edges of structures. Thanks for the tip and I look forward to trying in on one of my builds.
Tom ;D
Thanks for following along, Tom.
Changing out the stains for the edges is a nice contrast/wood rotting outside in effect. Hope it helps!
I'm along for the ride Craig.....neat looking kit. :)
Okay, update time!
After staining the walls, I painted all the windows and doors with an airbrush, utilizing a flat grey base coat, followed by layers of beige and off-whites.
I added the 1/16 corner trim (also stained with the Blue Grey) and then dressed the windows using my easy hack I recently posted. Some windows were left to be dressed for real, deepening the illusion.
Next up, I made a small push-out structure, similar to the one found on Izzy Fish.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fkeepitrusty.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2021%2F01%2Fimg_4501.jpg&hash=5c8c6e13fc7443a14db1767b118e516cf470fb14)
This will overhang onto the Saulenas' roof, so I pulled it off the shelf and made sure to glue everything accordingly.
Before I assembled the walls, I decided to scrap the included dormer in favor of scratch building a larger, flat roof design (also in line with Izzy Fish). I used clapboard from Northeastern Scale Lumber and a Tichy window. The shingles were from a roll, like found in FSM kits.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fkeepitrusty.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2021%2F01%2Fimg_4505.jpg&hash=142f69eae262961942f385556fb061f6de67568e)
One last thing I did was design new signs! My building was to become "Siekirk's Seafood" — in tribute to another great modeler ;) I used an old "Prunier" poster and re-made it for my own world (see below)
With the walls all prepared, I began assembling!
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fkeepitrusty.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2021%2F01%2Fimg_4513.jpg&hash=b1cd76d50a1c309935f147a4acfb54246816cc44)
The undressed windows seen here have been left this way as Saulenas' will cover them completely.
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fkeepitrusty.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2021%2F01%2Fimg_4512.jpg&hash=e91b504a127f443ca6169f0c5eadd874d97583d9)
(https://modelersforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fkeepitrusty.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2021%2F01%2Fimg_4511.jpg&hash=7c8504fe40235fff8d14c529fbec3a37eeef167d)
The main roofing was also shingled using Shake Shingles from KC's workshop. Scale 2×6 was used to add trim around the roof's edge. I added my own capping on the second floor roof, the same lumber I used for Saulenas' cap.
This has put me around 70% done. I've still got a number of things to do, including finishing the structure, weathering, detailing, adding signs, organic growth, placing Preisers etc etc.
More soon.
Awesome! :o
I don't know what else to say. You left me practically speechless with this one. :P
Fantastic work, Craig. Detailing is well done. That restaurant billboard on the side is wonderful. You can't beat that log: "Where seafood dies but you go to heaven." Brilliant.
The rotting wood effect at ground level is particularly nice. I seldom go that "heavy" on the effect for fear I will overdo it, but you have pulled it off very well.

Great modeling Craig. I love the signage.
Damn, that looks good.
Craig can only say one thing. "IMPRESSIVE"!

So pleased you like it. I had fun with these signs. I do have one more to add, but may resist in effort not to go over the top. We will see!
The rotting wood is an effect I really like, and I've contained it to the harbor side only. All that salt water has gotta wreck havoc! Letting the stain wick as opposed to painting it on allows for maximum control — and I recommend you give it a go! Thanks George!

I really like the sign.
Cheers, Mark.
Thanks, Mark.
I always really enjoy creating signs. I've already designed my next building sign as I just couldn't wait!
Great looking structure!

Great modeling! And thank you so much for the tribute. I was catching up on all the posts this week and really studying the way you weathered this structure and then the really cool custom signs. And, as I'm admiring your work I realized it had my name on the sign, I was looking past it at your work. Fantastic work and again thank you.

Relieved you approve, John! My little way of giving back to the community! And thank you for your kind words, they mean so much.
That is some really spectacular coloring...the moisture wicking up the stairwell wall is something I've never seen. As Tom said, the variation in stains around the edges is really a clever and realistic trick as well. Great work and a great re-imagining of Doug's kit!
John
John, thank you for stopping by — and my for your kind words.
I always strive to create structures that look like they are a part of the Earth, as opposed to just sat on top of it. The rotting, wet wood effect is one of those tricks that's a simple as it is great. I'm glad you like it.
More soon!
Hello Craig, really impressive modeling. I like the colors, the signs and the weathering. You've gone to a whole 'nother level with this one. Jeff

Thank you, Jeff! From another modeler tackling an FSM tribute, I really appreciate this!
First of all, let me start off by apologizing for not having any more in-progress photos to show for this build. Time crunches put me on a schedule and any build time was spent doing just that.
Here's what I did between then and now, to bring it across the finish line:
- Finished the small side structure's roof. I followed the instructions, but I used shingles instead of the paper tar roofing. Construction paper flashing was added at the corners to transition the shingles from surface to surface.
- Weathered the entire building with pastel chalks.
- Black pitch added.
- Awning added. Used George Sellios design, adding front decorative elements using scalloped scissors.
- Added detail castings. Some 3D printed (like the pipes, downspout, trash bags), some were from Rusty Rail (trash cans, water tank), some were from the FOS kit itself (chimneys), some were from FSM kits (the sailfish, the pigeons) and some were scratch-built (the fishing rod).
That rod was made using 1.2mm rod tapered to a point. The handle and reel is 1/8″ dowel shaped using a mini-lathe, with brass and copper tubing for the reel handle. The loops and line are all 28GA wire. - Organic growth added using Woodland Scenics foliage.
- Sidewalk added. This was another Bar Mills weathered sidewalk, but to add variation it was cut to a narrower depth and water putty added to the brick surface to vary design. Two Woodland Scenic figures were also added at this stage.
- Small posters added. Also added a cardboard box here too.
- Real leaves (ground up fine) added to rooftops and sidewalk.
- Final pass over entire building, adding more pastel chalks and tying various elements together.
So, here it is, all finished. Per the previous post, the four unfinished windows on the left hand side will be completely covered by Saulenas' Tavern.

Wow, George! Probably the highest compliment I've ever received! Thank you... truly. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. This was a great build and a testament to Doug's wonderful design.
Beautiful work, Craig.
Love the fishing rod attached to the sign! Some really nice details and weathering.
Might I suggest some stain added to the rafter tail ends on that third story extension?
Cheers, Mark.
Absolutely stunning , and the fishing rod is icing on the cake.
