While taking a break from the Atlantic and Southern RR. I came across an old CD with very old F&SM photos. The CD is dated 1988 and I have no idea where I got it or from whom.
I didn't take any of the 271 photos on the CD but I'll try to clean the color if possible.
Some may be repeats of what John and I posted to the official F&SM thread, I don't know for sure. However, many are of different angles or of areas and structures no longer on the F&SM layout.
I'll post them in the order they come on the CD.

What a great find. We know they are from before the center mountain by the roundhouse came down. Thank you for posting them.
Thanks for sharing these, Tom. What a great find.
If I'm not mistaken, the Emporium Seafood kit was released around 1996? I wonder how long the pilot model was on the layout for before the kit went out?
Tom, I agree perfect find's. :)

Craig,
You may be out of surgery by the time you get to my response. I agree, I don't think Emporium was done back in the late 80's and then released as a kit in 1996. The 1988 date is on the plastic cover of the CD so I guess we may find some recent kits. Just don't have any info on where this came from or how it ended up in my stash.
I also have a file on the CD with all the kit information but can't seem to get it open to view.
Get well soon.

Great Pics, I love the older F&SM pictures. So many changes George has made.
I don't think these are from 88 though. That Silvercup rooftop billboard looks like a laser cut similar to Bar Mills. I don't think lasers were widely adopted in 88 yet.

Steve,
You and Craig are correct in the 1988 issue. I think it was just on the plastic cover so I assumed it was from then. In viewing the rest of the photos, it appears to be more like the late 90's into early 2000s.
Thanks for the comment.

John Siekirk and I took over 3000+ photos of the F&SM and they all can be viewed on the regular F&SM thread if you haven't already done so.
I didn't take any of the photos list here and some of the photo were beyond repair.

Is there any articles on when he started this layout? I did see some articles way back in the model magazines but nothing extensive. It seemed like he just pop on to the modeling scene.

Bernd,
Thank you. The drawbridge photos were mixed in the file and are not old photos. These were taken a few years ago and should not have been included. However, I'm going to leave them for now.
I believe George started building the F&SM in 1983 or 1986, can't remember. Allen Keller did three VHS tapes of the F&SM. George has been on the modeling scene for some 40 years.

Karl
Thanks for posting these Tom...I could look at a million FSM photos and just keep finding more details and ideas about coloring and scene designs. It's just beyond belief. There's always more. I admire many layouts, but there's just nothing like the F&SM. George is from another planet ;) I don't care how many hours and years have gone into it-it's still hard to comprehend the level of appropriate, interesting, clever detail in every square inch of this layout. In my opinion, there are many GREAT layouts, but nothing else in the same category as George's. I don't mean it like a sports team bias, just that no other layout I've studied resembles the level of detail.

Karl,

I'm still going through the old F&SM photos. I also want to mention again that I didn't take these. I've tried my best to clean them so they show the F&SM how it should be seen from the eye of the camera.
However, some were beyond my ability to fix. Many were very much out of focus or the color was to washed out to be able to use the photos.
I believe it is a disservice to George's craftsmanship to show photos that are out of focus or not reflective of his work.
Some of these appear to be the same photo but if you look closely, they are at a very slight different angle.

I came close to dumping this photo but this is an example of a photo that is washed out. I cleaned it the best to show the side of the structure over Cooper's Garage.

Boy, I'm glad you didn't dump it. Shots of that long sold Fenstermacher building are rare!
Tom
Great old photographs - I'm always amazed at how many times George has moved some of the structures on the layout. Thank you again for taking the time to share them with us.

I spotted this building in the last Allen Keller video he did. Thanks for the side shot Tom!
Hey Tom:
Thanks for all the great FSM photos.
