Hi folks time to start the I'm Dunn build , looking forward to suggestions, criticism and pretty much anything the evolves my building abilities.
I started first off by giving the castings a coat of Krylon Camouflage Khaki and will let them rest a bit.
I cut a 3/4" plywood for the base and at the same time as spraying the castings did the same to the diorama perimeter pieces and then used Aileens tacky to fix them in place.
Hey Lynn:
Looks good so far.
Karl
Moving forward a bit , I made up the 5 bents and added the nbw's and spaced them apart 1-5/8 with measured paper placed on the base between the retaining walls. There is also a piece of stock for the coal ramp that's a spacer and then back to 1-5/8 .
Looking good Lynn.
Looking forward to seeing this build come together Lynn.....I'll be looking in. :)
Should be an interesting build--I'll be tagging along, Lynn.
--Opa George
Thanks guys hope I don't disappoint. Don't expect the speed building like Karl :)
I gotta make one of those egg carton strip wood organizers before I go much further.
Moving forward a bit , found one of Ensigns ( Greg) old post from his build at the RRL and made the egg carton stripwood organizers .
I started picking and colouring the wood , I'll be using Hunterline Driftwood. I had this bottle and a couple others on the shelf for a while.
There is a front wall that the ramp slopes down onto.
I got the ramp that's under the rail and between the bents installed.
Great beginnings here! Loving that homemade stripwood holder! Consider it stolen... again.
Will be following along for the journey.
Thanks Craig , definitely of my idea, should have made the 18 egg carton. :)
I got the 4 wooden floors done and the road ramp in. I had to order some Durhams water putty as per the instructions, I was just going to use plaster but decided to stick to the kit plan.
Coming along very nicely Lynn !!

Great SBS pictures. Nice job on the beginnings of the kit.
I'll be following along.

Nice start on this one!

Count me in as a follower on this one Lynn! You're off to a great start. This one's on the shelf but I don't when I'll ever get to it. It'll be fun to see what you do with it. ;)
Thanks guys for following .
Bob there sure isn't too many builds that I could find of the I'm Dunn
Lynn,
Will follow along on your build.
Great start...we all like coal yards...
Tommy
Got a start on the stringers , posting a pic of the instructions paint formula , Raw Sienna and A/I.
I already cut the stringers to correct length edge to edge on the retaining walls.

Hi Tom yes we gotta have coal. :)
Lynn,
Getting caught up on all the threads. Very nice start to Dunn's. I'll be following along as well.
Tom ;D
Thanks Tom, I know what you mean about catching up. :)
Hey Lynn:
I test fit this kit for George when it first came out. It' s A great kit. Enjoy it.
Karl
Thanks Karl , it is a nice kit , railings on the trestle almost got the best of me.
Let's get an update in, I got the railings installing on the trestle.
Got the Durhams Water Putty down on the roads .
Got the concrete painted and weathered as well the stone walls on the shack.
I used I think 6 colours on the stone building walls doing washes , let dry then have a watered down black wash.
I also started the wood ramp and the open shed framing.
As usual I appreciate criticism and suggestions, can't say I enjoyed weathered the concrete and I may still do more to it
Everything looks great Lynn. I think your coloring of materials is spot on.
I wasn't happy with the concrete on the base so I've been playing around a bit more , I think it's better but it's still not there. Thoughts ?
Lynn, You may want to try a craft paint from Ceramcoat called "Mudstone".

That's a good color for weathering and drybrushing, too.
dave
I still have mud in floquil, I think I may be just about there . I'm going to let it completely dry and try some light coloured chalks to see if I can blend in the oil stains and ramp area a bit .
Ok I think I have it done.
Love the look of your concrete. Could you detail the process, colors used etc. Thanks, Mark
I think it looks good already. As you said, a little bit of chalk weathering...perhaps including some tans...and maybe a few weeds in the cracks?
Hi Mark ok let me see if I can sort this out how I did it , let's get passed where I didn't like the results and pretty much my drizzle grey full strength and using the sponge dabbed into the grey and onto paper towel and then start dabbing , I did this until the dark colour was pretty much eliminated ( you can look back and see the dark colour previous post. Now I found it too grey so I shaded the grey using a couple drops of black and did the same with the sponge never hitting the same spot I just dabbed, that helped but still too greyish, I then went to a tan colour Suede , same idea tint and shade the colour alternating, now found too dark so went back to my light antique white only this time I used my bristle brush , into paint , onto paper or even the wood base as you can see the colours there, and just started alternating around so it wasn't a uniform colour pattern , I would sometimes use light antique white and sometimes Suede and sometimes even the tinted grey. Just kept going until it looked like a photo of aged concrete. I finished off with a bit of chocks taking some grey and black blended on the ramp and just moving it around a bit. I think I have a large casting I may try it on again on the smooth backside , honestly I'm no artist and it was strictly trying to paint what I seen in the photo. Hope this helps, just try it and ask questions if need be.
With concrete looking the way I like it I switched my attention back to build the structures, the crane support and stone building as well I thought I'd tackle the metal roof.
Thanks Lynn, for your response on the concrete color. I like what you've got going there. I find concrete tough to replicate. I can't find a simple mix that makes it right, and I'm beginning to believe that it's multiple colors, layered, with hints of many colors, and that this 'concrete issue' will never be solved by single color, or a few colors. Loving the progress on this kit. Mark
You are quite right Mark , I think concrete is a multitude of layers of colours especially if it's old concrete.
Bouncing all around , I got the stone building put together . This is one of those kits that I need to get the scenery and ground figured out before I can put all the buildings and crane in place or I'll be bumping into them.
A few more random pics , it's funny how one step not done stalls other areas.
Coming together quickly. Looking great.
Wow. Moving right along! I like the little stone building. The stone colors look great.
The previous discussion nailed it on concrete colors - layers upon layers. I noticed inconsistencies in the coloring of the sidewalks around my neighborhood yesterday even though they were all put down pretty much at the same time. Weathering, pressure washing (which I'm sure wouldn't happen at I'M DUNN), etc. tend to alter the appearance. Having coal around in large quantities would definitely dirty it up a bit. :D
Looking very good, Lynn. The stone building (scale house maybe?) looks phenomenal. It genuinely has the appearance of being built from individual blocks.
--Opa George
Thanks guys , it is coming together nicely, I'm hoping to get things in place over the weekend , still have to do the flat roofs and paint and weather the metal roof. I'm actually a bit surprised at the lack of castings in this kit, guess George really was Dunn.
I wish I had Bob's patience for documenting, I've learned so much from your well documented builds Bob, along with everyone else's of course. :)
I think I'm about Dunn.
