Title: Friday August 2, 2024
Post by: Jim Donovan on August 01, 2024, 08:58:29 PM
I thought I would get a jump on the day by starting the night before because I wanted to share something. I am on a mailing list from a China company called AliExpress. They sell a whole lot of odds and ends, I suspect from manufacturers looking to offload overruns or discontinued items originally made for other OEM (Brand) exporters. The prices are often head turning but I had heard buying direct from China firms can be hazardous given identity theft so I use my PayPal account that has a second charge card I only use with PayPal. Anyway, often they have various electronic items such as bi-directional 3 voit slow turning geared motors for $1.80 each (I bought five!). They recently offered some very interesting trees that are made with coated wire armitures. Cost from $.85 each to $2.00 for largest (three sizes available). As I am looking at ways to add trees that have a realistic trunk I ordered some in. I was blown away with the quality. Sorry about the photo quality but you get a pretty good idea what I mean. The tree on the left is how they come out of the bag, the others I have 'fluffed' some. The wire is easy to adjust and the coating on the trunk looks natural. With a little color adjustment these will be the basis for my Cypress tree scene eventually.

Have a great day.

Jim

Morning Jim and others,

The trees are nice looking. I hope all is back to normal at the Donovan house.

I'm working on the layout today.

Have a great day everyone.

Morning all.

Those are nice looking trees, Jim.

Need to clean up the place and make sure the trains work as my daughter and grandkids will be coming Sunday.

Here's a Huey from the airshow.

Most of my passenger hours are in Hueys, a couple flights in Chinooks and one miserable experience in an OH-58B (underpowered piece of fertilizer!)  Although I had a bit role in fielding the Blackhawk, I never got to ride in one.  But I definitely have some good memories from Slicks...

The cobblestones are all glued down, now to color the vinyl sheets to match the (Faller) paper cobblestones next to Tull Brickworks office.  You can see how I handled the outside corner.

Good morning.

Lots of interesting photos to start of the day.  Nothing new here, hot, hazy, and humid.  Apparently the heat broke the National Weather Service thermometer, as there have been no official temperatures recorded for a couple days.  I'll be doing my best to stay reasonably cool today.

I hope everyone has a safe, rewarding, and comfortable (temperature-wise) day.

Good morning,

Jim, Trees! Pretty darn good looking.

I've had those "whooshing" sounds in my ears lately, maybe I should get it seen to?

Marty,
I have that same problem when the wind is blowing: in one ear and out the other with nothing in between.

Morning all,

I was sorry to read about your Jorden's sudden disassembly yesterday, Jim. :( Those are rather finicky to build.  So much so, that I gave all but one of mine to Tom (ACL1504).  I was never going to get around building them.

Nice progress on the layout, Dave!

Back to work on the 'lab' this afternoon.  I'm almost ready to start working on the mobile home I'm going to put it in.  Just a few more things to assemble and some final painting on the Walt and Jesse figures and the details will be finished.

Have a great one!

I sponge-painted the vinyl cobblestones with Unbleached Titanium Buff.  Looks pretty good, but I'll do a second coat tomorrow, after I do a wash to fill in the cracks where I patched the joints.
