Title: Old kit maker - HO Scale New England Structures Co
Post by: CVSNE on August 12, 2014, 08:37:15 AM
At the Greenberg Show this past weekend I found a guy selling his father's collection of unbuilt structure kits. He had several FSM kits, something called "G Willikers" and I think "Chippy Hollow."
I passed on the FSM kits but I bought one structure kit from him, made by "New England Structures." The Chalker Beach Crate & Pallet Co. I paid $50, but (which is what he was asking for it, I don't dicker on kit prices at train shows). I've searched eBay and see there's been a couple of these for sale over the years. I liked it since it looks generic New England enough that it will fit well with the other structures on my layout.
Does anyone know anything about this manufacturer? I know they're long out of business but curious if they did any other kits or were they a "one hit wonder?"

Hi CVSNE:

I've heard of them and I've heard of this kit. However, I forget what it looks like. I think it was pretty neat as I remember. Could you post a photo of it. I'm pretty sure they also made other stuff.

Karl,
Here's a picture of the box from an old eBay auction.

I remember that kit. The guy who them first name was Bob. I can't remember his last name. He lived in New england and I believe later moved to Viorginia.

PS:

He also used to sell scratchbuilds that he built at train shows.

I bought Chalker Beach Crate and Pallet company many years ago while on business in Connecticut. They had a finished model in the display case, and I thought, I need that. Well, many years later, I sold it at a swap meet in Tucson. I can't recall the name of the hobby shop, but they had a Caboose next to the building and they we up on a hill. It was a very nice shop and I tried to get there when I was near by. The kit looked well done and I probably should have kept it, but that is the way the cookie crumbles. Good luck with the build.

Hi Guys:

His name was not Bob. It was Frank Barillilo. I think he lived in  Connecticut. I heard he's in Maine now.
