Title: Pratt's Hollow Short Line RR in On30
Post by: Larry C on January 05, 2025, 02:58:29 PM
Since I'm new here I may as well jump in with both feet. About October of 2024 I started a new shelf layout; it's 7ft. long with the left half at 16in. wide and the right at 22in. wide. I won't bore you with all the pics but only those to give a "thumbnail sketch" of where I'm at so far.

Even though this will be a small freelance railroad I did use a place for inspiration. My  Grandparents lived in a sleepy little hamlet out in the middle of nowhere called Pratt's Hollow located dead center in New York State. There were about a dozen houses, a few small farms, a disused one room schoolhouse, an old closed general store, a Methodist Church with a Bar & Hotel across the street, and a Post Office, next to the Church, in someone's house. At one time there was a railroad that ran behind Pratt's Hollow along the ridge.

So enough jabbering; here's the track plan:

IMG_020.jpeg

This layout uses DC only with the track & turnouts being HO scale utilizing the chassis with On30 built on top.

There are some definite ideas and inspiration for the new layout and I hope to accomplish a very rural looking short line railroad type of layout but still have a good variety of structures for interest.

Started at the left end of the layout with the first scene:

IMG_023.jpeg

This is a scratch built simple engine shed using 6x6's for the framework, 2x10's for the siding. and 3x12's for the floor. All the wood was grained, colored with Rembrandt chalks & clear alcohol, then weathered with more chalks.

The windows are grant line with acetate added for the glass and the bench was also scratch built using 6x6's for the frame and 2x10's for the top treated the same way as the building wood. The smokestack was made from a straw and heavy paper for the cone. The signs are from my computer files and the details are either from the parts bin or are Sierra West. I since have added a belt to the lathe made from Tyvek with an electric motor attached to the rafters which you'll see in another photo.

Thanks for taking a look; there'll be more to follow. Any comments and/or suggestions are appreciated.

As promised here's the Engine Shed with the belt and motor added to the lathe:

IMG_026.jpeg

The motor was a better option since there really wasn't enough room for a steam engine and boiler with the other things I wanted to include in the scene.

IMG_032.jpeg

This was my next scene to be built; a salvage yard which I thought would be a good fit being across the siding from the Engine Shed.

The building is another scratch build from my previous layout that I refurbished; also used windows from Sierra West. The scene was built onto eighth in plexiglass so I could work at it at my bench. The fence is another scratch build using 6x6's for the frame and 2x10's for the boards; these were cut to various lengths with missing pieces, splits, and nail holes. The sign was done on my computer then printed on 100# paper (thin card) glued in place.

The salvage piles are resin castings from Rusty Rail painted then weathered which required a fair amount of time to complete. The items in the foreground are from the parts bin.

Used a combination of sand & dirt for the ground cover with scrub grass and weeds applied as needed. After the scene was placed on the layout, I used 2x10's around the edges to have a gradual change in elevation to the plexiglass then blend that into the layout.

That's about it for now. Thanks for dropping by and any comments and/or suggestions are appreciated.

IMG_035.jpeg

This is a water tower I scratch built for the layout. The base was constructed from 100# paper (thin card) over a framework of 6x6's. The stone is from a file on my computer printed then glued to the structure which measures 8ft. x 8ft. The tank part was made from 6x6'x for the frame and 2x10's for the sides both of which were grained, colored with chalks then given a coat of A&I. The spout is a piece of plastic sprue which I had on hand and the cables are heavy black thread after it was soaked in white glue then allowed to dry with weights to keep it straight. The ladder are 2x4's made on a template from a previously built kit. Here you can see the loco stopped ready to take on water.

IMG_037.jpeg

The window and door, on the front side, are from grande line. Inside of the tank I cut a piece of foam to fit then covered with card painted tan. The water was achieved by painting on several laters of polyurethane and allowed to dry between coats.

The sand bin was constructed with 6x6's for the frame along with 1x10's for the sides both given my usual treatment. Inside the bin resides a piece of foam cut to fit then covered with a few layers of sand built on 1x10 boards that are weathered. Also added a few NBW's for detail along with a shovel.
The coal bin came out of the parts bin with some added coal in front for some spillage on the ground.

IMG_038.jpeg

The area was finished off with dirt, weeds, and scrub grass. The tracks were given a dusting of white chalk to tone down the black ties. The car stop at the end of the siding was made from 6x6's and 2x10's glued into the foam. Added a cluster of rocks with weeds growing out of the cracks and added some random boards on the ground. On the side of the Engine Shed are a few barrels, one of which contains old wood, from SW colored and weathered with chalks then glued into place.

This is about as far as I've done on the layout to date. I'll continue on and will post my progress here. Any scratch built structures I'll post in the "scratch build thread" then I'll post the final pics on this thread. Thanks for looking in.

Since the Railroad Line Forum is closing tomorrow I'll be here for the foreseeable future. That being said I moved this thread from "Layout Tour" to here since they were nice enough to provide this new sub-forum. So anything that has to do with my layout will be posted here, i.e. track work, scratch builds, scenery, etc.  Hope you follow along.

Now to play catchup:

IMG_061.jpeg

IMG_062.jpeg

This build was for a Winter Challenge for the other forum. The idea was to build a rural, simple, and very basic sawmill in a 4x12 inch space.

The Mill consists of a storage shed scratch built using 6x6's for the frame, 1x10's grained and colored with Rembrandt chalks, a refurbished boiler, a vertical steam engine, single blade husk saw scratched with SW pulleys added, a scratch built carriage with SW details, and a carriage platform which was also scratch built. The other detail items are also from Sierra West. Lastly the belts are made from Tyvek and painted a belt color.

All in all this was a fun and interesting build proving just how much can be squeezed into such a small space.

Hi Larry,

Great job on packing quite a lot in a small space to make a complete scene.

I'll be posting here for awhile to, I hope the Railroad line forum comes back (and I also have my doubts and I doubt it will be the same), but if it doesn't, we have a new home here.  Now that I have started posting here, I probably continue to post here.

I too moved my build thread here, as it seemed to be a more appropriate place to be.

Title: Re: Pratt's Hollow Short Line RR in On30
Post by: Larry C on January 31, 2025, 10:17:09 AM
So far I've shown what I've already completed on my new layout. With that in mind here's what I'm thinking for my next scratch build which I'll share from start to finish:

Since this a a rural short line railroad I wanted to build a Farm Tractor Sales and Repair Shop; I remember some farms in the area of Pratt's Hollow growing up.  I had contemplated buying the Truck Repair Shop from Sierra West, and use that as a starting point, but I just couldn't justify spending over $300.00 for the kit. So I'm going to do the next best thing; scratch build my own.

Here's what I hope to accomplish with this build:
-Use a different type of base since the plexiglass, even though it won't warp, is too hard to work with.
-Scratch build the structure along with benches, cabinets, shelves, etc.
-Use SW details as much as possible; have already received an order.
-Make a removable roof which will be a first for me.
-Install lighting of some description; probably similar to what I did on one of my dioramas.
-Lastly with everything that's going on in RL this will probably take most of the winter.

So enough talk let's get to it then:

IMG_TS001.jpeg

Here's the blueprint. The building will measure 30 ft. long by 14 ft. wide and 10 ft. high with a regular pitched roof. The garage entrance will be 9.5 ft. x 8 ft. and a scratch door going into the building. The dotted line to the left is where an interior wall will reside with a doorway into a storage area which also has a window. The top drawing are the ends which will have the rafters already in place; using the same blueprint will hopefully make all the interior rafters exactly the same. I'll figure out the supporting framing as I go.

IMG_TS002.jpeg

This is the inside of the front wall; the other side will be visible on the layout. I decided to try something new and added "tarpaper" under the siding so that will be seen inside the Shop. The paper is from Hobby Lobby treated with some white chalk brushed in with a wide soft brush to show wear . This was then glued to the framing in one piece. After drying the doorways and window were cut out using a new blade in my knife. The framing is made from 6x6's grained, colored with Rembrandt tan chalk then received a coat of A&I.

IMG_TS003.jpeg

IMG_TS004.jpeg

IMG_TS005.jpeg

All the walls have been built the same way as the front wall was. The tarpaper was weathered with white chalks to show some age but not look worn out. The windows were added with each opening be specific to that particular window. I do have another part to add to each window to have it appear as open; but that'll come later. Looking at the last photo, the second post from the left corner is where an inside wall will be added once the building gets glued together with a doorway added. I did notice this morning that the front and back walls have to go inside of the end walls; luckily they're just tapped together at this point.

I did order five new colors of Rembrandt chalks, ranging from darker browns to grey, to give me better variety for my builds; one of which is a red that's midway between barn red and burgundy. I think I may use this as the color for the Tractor Shop to give some visual variety to the layout. Next I'll be starting on the exterior siding and as always thanks for stopping by.
Title: Re: Pratt's Hollow Short Line RR in On30
Post by: Larry C on January 31, 2025, 10:28:55 AM
The outside of the back wall is finished. Even though this will be the only time it'll be seen, since it'll be up against the backdrop, it did give me the opportunity to experiment with the coloring to get the look I wanted. This is the reddish chalk color which was applied then worked in the 2x10's with clear alcohol. While the wood was still wet grey was applied next then worked into the wood with a large soft bristle brush. This process gave me the faded, used look I was going for.

Next will be to color more wood and clad the front and the ends before any trim pieces go on. Also my Sierra West detail parts are set to arrive tomorrow so there will be lots to do.

IMG_TS006.jpeg

IMG_TS007.jpeg

IMG_TS008.jpeg

These are the two ends with 2x10's grained and colored the same as the back. I just noticed I need to fix the right hand wall peak; oops. The windows will be the last thing done so I can lay the walls perfectly flat to work on the interiors. The windows will be the same color as the roof trim boards.

And the inside built the same way as the back wall. I purposely didn't put in windows in the center of the walls to maximize the interior wall space.
Title: Re: Pratt's Hollow Short Line RR in On30
Post by: Larry C on January 31, 2025, 10:39:22 AM
The front wall. When I do the windows the door will be scratch built. You'll notice I did add a few half boards as well as some splits and pieces missing from the boards to add some interest on this and the ends. Also need to add nail holes the the outside walls; which I'll probably do next.

IMG_TS009.jpeg

After a few touchups on the exterior walls then the interiors will be detailed BEFORE they get glued together just to make life easier. Will just have to do some careful planning as far as where things start and stop.

IMG_TS010.jpeg

Now this thread is all caught up to where I'm currently at with this build; I guess I'd better get busy. I copied all of this yesterday as soon as I read the RRL announcement; easier to copy & paste than writing this all over again. As always thanks for following along.

Thanks Jerry and yes I wanted to keep this thread going which keeps me going.

SPOILER ALERT: NEW CONTENT!!!!

Now the I've caught up on my thread, it's time to move forward with the build:

IMG_TS011.jpeg

Years ago I built this little jig using a pieces of actual 1x3's with the mill edges glued
and nailed together with finishing nails. Even though I don't use it often it's good for this:

IMG_TS012.jpeg

This way I'm able to get the workbench square with the back wall. The bench was scratched using 6x6's for the frame and legs along with 2x10's for the top. All the wood was grained, colored with tan chalks and A&I. the Top received further graining and the front edge was "gouged" out a little with my
knife. The front received an another piece of 2x10 and the drawer fronts are 1x6's with cut down track nails for the drawer pulls.

IMG_TS013.jpeg

Now I'm starting to visualize the interior back wall. The floor cabinet was scratched using 2x10's and 100# paper for the back. The cabinet was a little fidly to build since the boards were glued standing on their edges. The details are SW primed then painted with various colored chalks and clear alcohol.
The wall shelf is made from 3x12's then glued to the studs. The batteries are from Brett spray painted flat black with most place on the shelf and a couple elsewhere.

That's what I've done on the back wall for now. I have an air compressor to go under the battery shelf and a Locker with a ht, coat, and a pair of boots which will go on the floor. I'm also going to attempt making some fan belts from very thin strips of Tyvek which will hang on rods over the bench; signs and posters will also be added. Still lots to do on the back wall before doing the sides; the front wall, since it won't really be seen, will have very little in the way of inside details. Thanks for stopping by and look forward to your comments/suggestion.

Philip thanks. The black is material from Hobby Lobby, it's black "scrap booking" paper
which has texture on both sides; it's about $.25/ per sheet. It's quite convincing with a
little white chalk brushed in with a soft brush.

Curt thank you; your comments are appreciated.

IMG_TS014.jpeg

The back wall is coming along nicely. The locker is from SW primed grey then added some green chalks which I blended in and hit the details on it with some grey as well. The hat and coat makes for a nice touch. Added a 3x12 board over the shelf and bench which were populated with some chains and belts  made from very thin strips of Tyvek painted black; also added a coil of rope made from heavy thread. Used a pencil as a form to make the belts; not perfect but convincing. The hangers are ends of track pins glued in place to hang the chains and belts; left one empty where a belt once hung. Also added a couple of signs on the wall.

I have about a half dozen details primed and ready for paint that I'll get to the next few days. Still have to hunt through my parts and see what I have for the bench; may have to order a couple of items from Wiseman.

That's it for now and as always thanks for stopping by and leaving your comments and/or suggestions.

Had some time late this morning and did a little more on the back wall of the Tractor Sales & Repair Shop:

IMG_TS015.jpeg

Carefully removed the belts off the hooks and grabbed tweezers, new toothpick, and a straight pin then set to work "banding" the belts with a narrow strip of white paper along with a little white glue to hold everything together. Used the tweezers and a straight pin to open up the loops on the belts then glued them in place. They do look much better as well as hanging better.

The other detail is the oil sump which is another SW print. The top metal parts were painted with gun metal paint and the body was colored with raw umber chalk & clear alcohol applied heavily. After everything dried then added some black chalk to simulate oil spilling over the sides. The bottom of the bottle was painted brown to simulate oil. The unit was glued to the back wall. I do have an air compressor to go in between the locker and sump but that will be glued to the floor when I get to that point in the build.

Next up is to figure out what's going on the bench and maybe add a couple of shelves over the bench and fill it with shop stuff. Not a lot, but a little progress and as always thanks for taking a gander.

Howdy Larry,

The banding made the belts look even more authentic.  Is that a lubster I spy?  Nice job painting it.  The additional details really set the scene off.

Have fun,

Bob sounds like you're building a good sized layout and look forward to your thread. To answer your question it's a "point to point" of sorts. Back on page 1 of my first post is a photo of the entire layout; I like to call it an "out & back" arrangement where you start on the left end (Engine Shed) and go to the far right end of the layout then back across the dried up creek bed to where the Salvage building resides (across from the Engine Shed). Sorry for being so long winded with your question.

Hopefully you can stand one more photo of the back wall of the Tractor Repair & Sales building:

IMG_TS016.jpeg

Added two shelves over the workbench, the area was lacking something, and populated it with more cans and bottles situated between the belts. Also added a small crate with cans inside, a hammer with the handle hanging over the edge of the bench, a pair of pliers, a bottle with water and one with acid for the battery, and lastly a black coffee pot; need coffee while working. I did order a few things from Wiseman which will finish up the bench and back wall.

IMG_TS017.jpeg

Started on the right end wall. Being it's only 13 ft. wide on the interior it won't take much to detail the area. I added a large sign, from my computer files, which went high up on the wall and sort of over the window. The hand operated drill press is from SW and painted then hung on the wall by the window. Also hung a long chain from a hook under the sign. I have a floor jack which will go in front of the window and maybe a barrel in the front right corner.

Next I think I need to start on the floor for the building. I already have the base cut so I can build the floor right on top of that; please excuse the cat hair in front of the bench. That's it for now and as always thanks for stopping by and for your comments and/or suggestions.

Larry, it's looking real good.
Might I suggest making boxes out of paper and a couple of wooden crates made from strip wood.
For the boxes you'd need paper a little stiffer than loose leaf but they're very easy to make.
And you can make a few different sizes.
Same thing with the crates.

Bob thanks. Most of the details are from Sierra West. Brett has a few pages of 3D printed items that can be purchased besides his kits.

Mike thank you so much.

Moving right along:

IMG_TS018.jpeg

Finished the floor this morning. I used a piece of photo mounting board sealed for the base instead of plexiglass; so far so good. The flooring material is 2x10's grained and colored with burnt umber chalks. I did add some shorter pieces of flooring working the ends even more with a wire brush. For all you "naysayers", yes I added nail holes on the floor.

IMG_TS019.jpeg

The walls are just sitting there not glued together yet. I do like the contrast between the flooring and the wall beams. When I start placing the floor details then I'll add in oil stain, dirt, etc.

IMG_TS020.jpeg

IMG_TS021.jpeg

The right end wall did receive another sign while the left two signs. Anymore details will be added to the floor in front of the side walls after the walls are glued together.

Next I'll finish off the six details that will reside on the floor before actually gluing the building together. As always thanks for stopping by with your comments and/or suggestions; they are appreciated.

Progressing at "a snails pace" due to life but here's a quick update:

IMG_TS022.jpeg

Added a few more details to the back wall; this is the last of the details for that area. The big "monkey wrench" and vise are from Wiseman primed with black primer then painted gun metal and red respectively. The air compressor is a print from SW primed with grey then colored with reddish chalk and rust colored chalk for the motor portion. Everything then received a coat of A&I to tone it down a little and added a belt from the motor to the compressor. I decided to go with a "well used" look for this item.

Next I'll "dirty up" the floor a little then glue down the rest of the floor details before gluing on the second half of the building. Thanks for stopping on by for a gander as well as leaving your comments and/or suggestions.

Moving along:

IMG_TS025.jpeg

A top down view; starting from the back right corner: added dirt to the floor heavier around the bench, oil sump, and around the oil pan; the rest of the floor just hit & miss. Also grudged up bench as per Ron's suggestion. The wall drill press has metal shavings both on the drill and on the floor underneath.

The Tractor is from SW and unfortunately the back wheel broke off which turned out to be a happy accident. Made an axle block from a piece of 12x12 given my usual treatment. Added a creeper, oil pan with an empty can thrown in, oil can waiting to be used sitting next to the tractor, a pail by the front tire, and a floor jack standing by to unjack the tractor; these are also from SW.

The left side I added a garbage can, a broom on the wall, and a 50 gal oil can with a wrench placed on top. On the right side I placed the tractor tire against the wall while the axle is being fixed. The interior is finished as far as details go.

IMG_TS023.jpeg

IMG_TS024.jpeg

Here's a couple of shots taken looking through the tractor entrance. Also added dirt where the vehicles enter. Next will be finishing off the 3 windows
and gluing them in place before finish gluing the walls together.  Thanks for stopping by for a look-see and for your great comments and/or suggestions.

Time for an update:

IMG_TS026.jpeg

The rafters are done and the sub-roof is done as well made from 2x10's for strength. I did color the the underside of the sub-roof which really isn't seen but I know it's been done. For whatever reason the front right end is a little funky so I may have to shim that end rafter. Also the windows are finished with acetate added for glass and made dirty with some white glue smeared on and allowed to dry. The front window I did model as closed and the door still needs to be built.

IMG_TS027.jpeg

Both end windows I modeled as open for some variety. You can see here the right back rafter may need some shimming. The roof itself will be from 1x10's grained and colored going in the opposite direction. By doing this I'm hoping that will help straighten the sub-roof.

IMG_TS028.jpeg

Here is the Shop with the roof off so the interior details are visible. I did add lighting in the rafters so I'll snap a pic tonight and post it tomorrow.

Next will be adding the outer roof and shimming the end rafter if need be. As always thanks for taking a look and leaving your comments/suggestions.

Larry,

That's a terrific scene.  It certainly looks like work is going on.

Now, I'm no expert, and it's probably too late if I'm right, but is the tire on the tractor the wrong way around?  Probably no one else noticed.

The lighting is very well done.  And I really like these old tractors as models and in real life.  They fascinated me when we would visit my uncle's farm in Genesee county.

Tom thank you.Yes I'm very pleased with the night look.

Micheal thank you so much. I rechecked the photo then checked the actual model. It
seems "Goodyear" is stamped on both sides of the rear tires. Also they could only go on
the tractor axels one way, Good eye though!

I'd like to second Mike's compliments on your work!

I have thoroughly enjoyed this thread, thanks for posting.

As a former tractor owner, I did notice.  In general, tractor lugs should point in the direction of travel when viewed from above. This cleans out the mud to the side instead of packing it into the lugs.  There are a few exceptions to pointing forward, like possibly when the tractor has a bucket on the front and you are digging a hole and need the traction in reverse, or talking about a tractor that only operates on pavement to save tread wear, but now I am stepping into "lug counting" territory so I need to stop now.

Again, great work!

Hi Larry. The lighting looks really nice . And your garage is excellent Larry.  What kind of lights did you use and how will  you be  powering them Larry?  Thank you sir. Bob.

Mark thank you so much; appreciate your comments.

Dave thanks and steal away.

Bob thank you for the nice compliments. Actually the lights are some LED's that my
wife had and didn't have a use for anymore. They're too large scale wise so I hid them up in the rafters
and painted the bulbs with a thin coat of yellow paint to soften the light. They run on 3 volts;
2 double A's with an off & on switch at the end of the case.

The roof is finished which seemed to help with the gap on the right back side. I did add some wood
to lessen the gap painted to match the trip.

IMG_TS031.jpeg

The roof was finished off with 1x10's grained then colored with raw umber chalks and clear alcohol. The thinner boards are 1x4's which received the same treatment. I'm quite pleased with the way this turned out. I even added an upright horseshoe over the tractor door for good luck.

Next I'll build the entrance door and start getting some outside details done up and glued in place before any scenery material is added. Thanks for stopping by for a gander and for leaving your comments and/or suggestions.

Curt thank you. For some reason the sub-roof boards warped when they dried.
Applying the roof boards going the other way seemed to help a lot.

Mike thanks. I had the horseshoes left over from another build and thought it
would add a little extra something over the Tractor door.

Jerry thank you so much. I'm also looking forward to a thread with your fine work
appearing when you get around to it.

Moving right along:

IMG_TS032.jpeg

Well I'm going to call this build done. Added a fueling area for the tractors, a 50 gal drum, and an old rusted jack that no longer works along with scenery material.

IMG_TS033.jpeg

On the front side I added another drum, a wooden barrel, and a gas can by the gas pump along with some weeds and dirt. The entrance door is scratch built using 4x4's for the frame, 1x6's for the panels, and a small piece of florist wire for the door handles. I glued the door in the open position to add some interest.

IMG_TS034.jpeg

Lastly this is the left end. Added two barrels full of junk waiting to get picked up by the metal guy. Also threw in a couple of old batteries, an old rusted jack, an old engine, and a wooden barrel. Added scenery material was well.

All of the detail parts I had on hand and most are from Sierra West. Of course I still need to blend the Tractor Shop into the layout at some point. Not sure what's coming next; may take a break from modeling for awhile. Thanks for looking in and for leaving all your comments and/or suggestion.
