This brings us up to today.
The chute gates were first blackened, then burnished followed by light rust and gray weathering powder. After permanent mounting, I checked, and a single wire goes through the 12 openings. Directions say I should have 3 separate wires, but personally I like a single wire better.
After that I built and mounted a platform where the gates can be operated from.
I'm not sure if I will make it to the train room tomorrow, but hopefully! Next up is building 2 sets of stairs.
Sorry for any photo duplicates up to this point.

Curt that turned out really nicely. You're going to have a ball with this kit.
Curt,
You are off to a great start.
All that Iron on the chutes look really tedious, it looks great and well worth the time spend doing that.
Very nice start, I'll be following along. We could use more Sierra West builds. Mark
Curt, I'm here to continue following along. :)
Curt you doing a great job. I'm with you here to.
Jerry
Good progress, looks like fun.
Curt,
Thanks for moving the build over here. You are doing a great job with this one. I love all the timber work. Looks great.
Tom
Curt,
Count me in here bro, I'll be watching you. 8)

Hey Mike !
Great seeing your here!
First off, I'm happy you found this forum, Welcome. You'll note a great number of familiar suspects, including myself are now on board here. Many familiar name will pop up.
I was looking at the photos... just great craftsmanship. I'd always taken a liking to that structure from Sierra West. It fulfills a different theme than I can use for the North Coast Railroad, but its a gorgeous stricture none the less. Keep us posted.
Fifth Dave on the Right
Howdy Curt, you are off to a great start on the mine. The bin structure is well executed and the coloring is spot on; really nice work. Have fun, mike
Good Afternoon,
Thank you Larry, Ron, Mark, Rick, Jerry, Karl, Tom, Rich, Michael, Greg, Philip, Dave, and Mike for following along, your comments and support. I'm humbled that so many people are following along.
The last couple of days were taken up by 1:1 things.
Today I got in the train room for a couple of hours. I built 2 sets of stairs after coloring the laser cut chip board. With that the build moves to the tipple house which sits on the base I've been building.
The interior framework is all laser cut so I did not need to build it board by board which surprises me based on how everything else is.
Next up is texturing and staining 35 pieces of 8" long strip wood. UGH!
20250202_114225.jpg
.
I'm certainly enjoying following along on this one. Looking good, Curt

Hey Mike !
Great seeing your here!
Thanks for the welcome!
Curt,
Do you have a jig for building flights of stairs? Yours turned out nice and straight.
Mike
Curt great job on the stairs. What I do, be it scratch or kit building, is color
some of the wood at a time. This accomplishes two things; first cuts down being so tedious and
secondly I found, on the Wood Cutters Shack, Brett sometimes gets a little over zealous on the
amount of material really needed. Just a suggestion.
Looking good Curt. Those stairs came out really nice.
Jerry
Afternoon All,
Thank you Terry, Bob, Philip, Rick, Michael, Larry, and Jerry for following along along with your comments and suggestions.
Michael there was a thick cardboard jig provided with the kit for the stairs. I also have a resin jig that I have used many times. I believe this one is from Rusty Stunps but not sure.
Larry I actually prefer to do all the strip wood at one time.
This is the strip wood for the tipple house and hoist house.
I did the following to 35 pices of strip wood:
Grain it.
Brushed a Red/Brown powder followed by RA on both sides.
Brushed on Brick Red craft paint on one side.
Sanded strips with 220 grit sandpaper.
Brushed with Dark Yellow powder to reduce pinkish color after sanding.
Strips wiped off with fingers.
This is a sample of the finished product.
20250203_111149.jpg
Looks good!
Nice looking wood!!
Nice colors on those boards.
You're doing a great job with this kit. I have kits, but I prefer to scratchbuild over building a kit.
That's just me. This way, if a mistake happens, you can always blame the manufacturer! ;D
Rich
Curt nice coloring on the wood!
Jerry
How many years outside did it take you to get that colour? ;D Nice colouring.
Afternoon All,
Thank you Philip, Larry, Rick, Rich, Jerry, and Ron for following along and your kind words.
Since the last update I have assembled the tipple house and mounted it on the legs which turned out a little fiddly trying to get the correct position with the 4 side roof supports.
The side roof supports had wood boards applied before being mounted on the tipple. I also put together and applied 12 NBW's over the ends of the truss rods. And lastly I mounted the 2 sets of stairs previously made.
The photos don't show the NBW'S.

Howdy Curt,
I would normally say the problem with the photos was sun spots, but it could have been the poles reversing magnetism...
The structure is looking terrific. You've done a nice job assembling those massive beams.
Have fun,

Curt, great job.
Love the faded red color and everything is looking plumb.
Nice!
Curt I have to say this is coming together very nicely!! Keep 'er going and have fun.
Curt you have the hang of this now. Great work!!

Afternoon All,

Nicely done.
Nice update!
Afternoon All,
Thank you Terry, Mark, Greg, Rick, and Philip for following along and your kind comments.
Terry I assume that was your rating?
Today I spent 3 hours on finishing the corner rafters and rafters tails. Talk about fiddly. :o

I've done that many times covering a tidy frame job. Those lil figures will thank you!
Afternoon All,
Thank you Jerry, Dave, Larry, Tom, Rick, Ron, and Philip for following along and your kind words. They are really appreciated.
Today I attached the corrugated roofing. The kit says to use tar paper for the back room roof and the ridge cap. I thought this would be very noticeable so I used corrugated on both.
I should be able to finish the tipple portion of the build by this coming Monday. The last two things to do are a landing guard rail and extensions for the three chutes.

Nice work Curt.
Curt The roof turned out really well; like the colors. Nice contrast between the roof and the framing
Afternoon All,
Thank you Rick and Larry for your kind words and following along.
Today I finished the Tipple portion of the build.
First I put some gray weathering powder on the roofing, built the safety railing, glued on the 2 hand wheels and modified the operating system so it made more sense with 2 blocks of wood and 2 flat car side pockets. Finally, I painted, weathered the 3 coal chutes extensions.
Next up is the Head Frame. I looked ahead and read the next set of instructions several times and still don't fully understand them. I guess I'll get there.

Afternoon All,
Thank you Terry, Mike, Larry, Jeff, Rick, Jerry, Greg, and Tom for following along and your kind words.
Today I finished the 1st side frame for the headframe.
One thing I found strange was that the truss rods are put in on the inside of the glued legs and don't go all the way through like on the tipple legs.
For something that looks very complicated when looking at it, the directions are actually fairly easy to follow.
I did have a head scratcher about what strip wood to use at one point until it clicked that the skinny side was out. ???

Curt looks like will be pulling ore up from the ground sooner than later!!! Nice job!!

Curt great job on the head frame so far. This build is really starting to shape up nicely. Enjoy and have fun.
Curt,

Tom
Curt,
Is it me or is the head frame looking a little flat? ;D That is one fine piece of engineering there with all the cross members and rods. Looks great.
Afternoon All,
Thank you Jerry, Mark, Philip, Rick, Larry, Tom, and Ron for following along and your kind words.
I have been working on the headframe since the last update. I think I've completed the wooden part of it. The next steps involve the white metal detail parts then the last thing to do is the NBW's.

on the inside peak?
Good Morning,
Thank you Jerry, Mike, Rick, and Larry For following along and kind words.
Larry isn't everything controlled by computers anymore? ::)
Today I finished the fourth hoist house wall. After that I lightly sanded the outside of all 4 sides to weather them a bit more.
Next up is coloring and putting together the windows and doors. It looks like that they are made the same way I have previously done on B.T.S. mine kits.

Afternoon All,
Thank you Rick and Philip for following along and your kind words.
Today I built the doors and mounted both windows and doors on the walls. They are colored with sponged on craft paint beige (looks brown) and then some rain gray is applied.
The freight doors are not glued in since they will be open in the diorama.
Next up is working on the hoist house floor.

Howdy Curt,

Looking at the photos I realized I hadn't added the inside wall portions of the window frame. Sigh ::). It's fixed now. SMH.
Coming on really nicely, Curt.
Enjoying watching your progress. I have BIS Silverado mine to build, which is similar in size to this one.
Cheers, Mark.
Curt, nice weathering on those doors and windows.
Curt great job on those walls framing and siding & coloring.
Jerry
8) looking great!
Curt,
Excellent stain and paint. The walls have that old weather beaten look.
Mike
Curt,
Great job on the individual board weathering. Looking very mine like. 8)
Tom
Afternoon All,
Thank you Mark, Rick, Jerry, Philip, Michael, and Tom for following along and your kind comments.
I've done a lot since the last update.
I built the diorama base with foam and thin plywood. I did the measurements for the different build components. I cut out the mine shaft that sits under the headframe. I really messed up one wall, but luckily you can't tell with the headframe in place. :)
20250318_085512.jpg
I made the floor for the hoist house and painted it Sand Dune colored craft paint. I will weather it later.
20250318_085432.jpg
Finally I primed all the resin details. I used flat Kakhi for the wood details and flat black on the resin "metal" parts. Both colors were rattle cans.
20250318_105645.jpg
I forgot to mention that the secondary track (narrow gauge) that goes under the tipple won't be used as such. I've decided to turn it into a truck filling station.
Curt nice priming job and looks like you'll be busy painting details for awhile. Brett certainly doesn't skimp when it comes to details.
Curt, nice to see all the progress.
Like Larry said. you'll be busy painting details for a while.
Curt,
You have been really busy I see. Are you sure you got all the resin castings there? ;D The walls look great, it looks like they badly need a coat of paint.
Good Afternoon,
Thanks for following along and your kind comments Larry, Rick, and Ron.
Today I finished the "wood" resin details. I applied medium brown and Gray weathering powders followed by a light use of A&I for shadow effect before giving it a coat of RA. The details in the boxes or shelves is done in craft paint of various colors.
It's hard to see in the photo but the metal bands on the wood barrels are weathered in light rust weathering powder and RA.
Tomorrow I'll work on the "metal" oil drums.
20250320_104743.jpg
Curt, you got them painted pretty fast and they look good.
Good Afternoon,
Thank you for following along and your kind words Rick.
Today I detailed the trash cans and 55 gallon drums. I had previously sprayed them in a flat black. The color is from various colors craft paint. After painting I ran a wire brush over the detail parts and on some I added black or rust weathering powder slightly wetted with RA.
20250321_120229.jpg
Curt you've been a busy guy! The details look really good, well done.
Looking good Curt. oh fun! 8)
Curt, just enough use and abuse on those barrels.
Curt great job on the details.
It's the fun part of his kits and there are plenty of them.
Jerry
Curt,
Great job on the painting and weathering of the details.
Tom
Hello Curt, the details that you've been working on will look great along with the build. Can't wait to see the whole scene on your layout.
Howdy Curt, nice job on the details. There are so many, too. Have fun, mike
I'm amazed by your work on the detail parts, well done..... 8)
Afternoon All,
Thank you Larry, Philip, Rick, Jerry, Tom, Jeff, Mike and Greg for following along and your kind words.
For the last couple of days I've been working on detail parts and just finished the horizontal boiler which consists of resin, white metal and styrene parts.
It has a very long smoke stack that will extend through a open sided shed roof and have guide wires holding it. The directions said the "collar" was to be made up of rolled tape for an anchor points (guide wires) but I used a Tichy brake wheel with the inside cut out.
The boiler sits on a "concrete" base. I lightly weathered the boiler with light gray, white and just a little light rust weathering powders.
Next up is the hoist house winch which has a large amount of white metal parts.

Bernd
8) AWesome!
Curt, great job on the details and hoist engine. THere are a lot of tiny parts on that hoist engine. :o
Nice job on the hoist. But that workbench is a real beauty!
Your doing some really outstanding work on this one.
Jerry
Curt very nice work on the details and the floor looks great.
Afternoon All,
Thank you Dave, Rick, Bernd, Philip, Ron, Jerry, and Larry for following along and your kind words.
Dave I'll try to find something similar online.
Today I made the pegs from 0.15 phosphorus wire from Tichy. After cutting I blackened them and glued them into the wall. After that I glued the details on.
The details are on an outside wall and the brown beam is the roof support for the open walled shed that the boiler sits in.

Dave, yes the operator has easy access to the bell.🙂
Today I was doing basic fitting on the diorama along with exterior steps next to the hoist house.

I'm trying to remember where I saw a hoist house layout, including the bell and signal sign. Maybe the Copper Queen Museum at Bisbee, AZ?
dave
The mine is looking great, Curt!
Cheers, Mark.
Curt,
The heavy timbers that make up the mine are just what you'd expect with hard rock mining. Quite an impressive complex, more for the realism than size.
Mike
Curt this is coming together nicely; you should be proud of the fine work you've done.
WOW Curt, that's looking very good.
Fantastic build!
Curt, the build is getting better and better with each update.
Curt that is just excellent!!
Jerry
Afternoon All,
Thank you Dave, Mark, Mike, Larry, Rick, Philip, Ron, and Jerry for following along and your kind works.
This is the last update before going on vacation.
Today I built the frame for the open sided shed that the horizontal boiler sits in.
Everything about this was fiddly and more than a few cross words were spoken!🙄

20250411_113305.jpg
Curt, WOW!
It might have been fiddly, but it looks great.
Wow...fantastic work!
Curt that looks really good despite being fiddly! Sometimes a "colorful" vocabulary helps with the process.
Curt,
That looks fantastic my friend. Well done and will be a great addition to the Pennsy.
Tom
Howdy Curt,
The shed looks great and perfect for the boiler. I may flatter you with a copy on Parish Tannery.
Have fun,
mike
Hello Curt, let me agree with everyone else- what a great job! The wood colors are spot on and the whole scene will certainly add to overall look of your layout. It's been well worth all the time and effort that you have put into building it.
Beautiful!!
Jerry
Curt, it wouldn't be fun if it wasn't fiddly ;D
It's looking great.
8) WUZ HERE ;D
Good Morning,
Thank you Rick, Cuse, Larry, Tom, Mike, Jeff, Jerry, Ron, and Philip for following along and your kind words. Sorry it took so long to respond.
I haven't posted in about a month because of a cruise and then dealing with Covid. Since the last post I detailed inside the hoist house.
Today I started detailing around the outside of the hoist house. I also put together the exterior air ducting for the mine which is braced and drying before painting.

Jerry

Glad your better Curt! Nice update!
Howdy Curt,
The interior looks great. I like the cluttered workbench and the dirty floor. Nice work!
Have fun,
mike
Very nice build, Curt.
Rich

They look like they've been sitting outside for a while.
Nice job!
Looks great Curt, only thing missing is the pin-up calendar. ;D
Great job on the details, like Rick said they look like they have been outside for years.
Howdy Curt, those details look great. I'm sure you'll spend happy hours painting the details in Brett's kits. Have fun, mike
Curt great job on weathering the details. Wonderful job on this kit all the way around.
Jerry
Curt the details look amazing; nicely done. As a suggestion I would add a little
rust to the pulley faces to age them a little.
Morning All,
Thank you Rick, Ron, Mike, Jerry, and Larry for following along and your kind comments.
Larry thanks for your suggestion. It makes sense.
Here are two more detail shots.

Afternoon All,
Thank you Jerry, Rick, Larry, Philip, and Greg for following along and your kind words.

Curt your really doing a great job on these details.
Jerry
Curt very nice!!! You're going to have a really nice diorama when you're finished.
Curt,
Love all those details, great job in weathering them as well.
Tom
Howdy Curt,
The tanks look amazing and well-used. Nice work as usual.
I feel obligated to let you know there should be three rivets on the big tank legs, not two... ;) ;D ;)
Have fun,
mike
Curt, great additions to an already great scene.
Good Afternoon,
Thank you Jerry, Larry, Tom, Mike, and Rick for following along and your kind words.
Since the last update I've done some more detail work but mainly worked on the hoist house roof.
After staining the roof trusses I removed them from the carrier sheet only damaging one rafter tail (very delicate). I was very happy to realize Brett had already attached the double sided tape on sub roof and cut the protective paper so each shingle row would line up. :o ;D
I added additional interior bracing to the trusses for rigidity.

Howdy Larry,
The trusses look well made and sturdy. Nice work. The shingles are outstanding and look real. Again, nice work.
Have fun,
mike
Curt, nice job on the trusses and roof.
Nice colors on the shingles.
Curt, looks to be a sturdy roof with those well-built trusses and nice coloring on the shingles.
Rich
Curt wonderful job on the trusses and the roof.
Jerry
Likey! 8)
Looking great, Curt.
Just curious - did the rafters have birds mouths in them?
Cheers, Mark.
Curt,
That roof is looking mighty fine.
Afternoon All,
Thank you Mike, Rick, Rich, Jerry, Philip, Mark, and Ron for following along and your kinds.
I have completed the kit and it's ready to be mounted on a wall in the train room.
This time I kept track of time working on this kit and it took me 143 modeling hours.

Curt,
That is a fantastic looking model. Very well done my friend.
Tom
Curt just an outstanding build!!!
Jerry
Excellent build and details.
Jeff
Hello Curt, what a wonderful job you did with this build. Is there a reason that it is not going on the layout and will instead be a wall mounted display ?
Curt, that looks great.
Congratulations on an outstanding model.
The way I looked at kits, especially the more expensive ones, was how many hours I got to build it.
If you divide the cost of the kit by those hours the price of the kit seems a bargain.
Curt,
That build looks like it was well worth everyone of those hours and then some. It's going to look great on your modeling shelf.
Curt I can only echo what the others have said. Fantastic job and I like that you added
a truck and some LP's to complete a great looking scene.
Hello Curt, I saw your explanation as to why this beautiful model will be a display only diorama. It would have looked great as part of your empire, but will also be a very interesting point of interest in your train room as a wall display. Either way, great job and terrific modeling.
Hello Curt, will we get to see a picture of the wall mounted display before you go on your trip ?
Howdy Curt,
The build is amazing and worthy of the display case. You've got to be proud of this one.
Have fun,
mike
Morning All,
Thank you Dave, Tom, Jerry, Jeff, nycjeff, Rick, Ron, Larry, and Mike for following along and your very kind words.
I ordered a $39 put together display case from Amazon. The kit was easy to put together. I priced a custom built one but it cost in the range of $200.
Sorry about the quality of the photos. The camera catches all the room reflections that are not as prominent to my eyes.

Curt, that's a pretty good deal on that box and it looks good.
If you send me the original file of that first picture I'll try removing the glare.
Photoshop has a function that does that but I'm not sure if it will work on a jpeg.
I'd like to try it though.
Rick sorry I got rid of the original because I wasn't happy with it. :(
Curt,
I see the mine is in a place of honour. The mine looks great in the case,
Hello Curt, your mine kit display looks great. What a nice addition to your train room. Good job sir.
Curt that looks great!!
Take another picture and send it to Rick he is a whiz at fixing pictures!!
Jerry
Curt great job!!!!! That looks amazing on the wall shelf.
