So here is the 5 dollar O scale kit I found at a show in Evansville, In. It is a Saloon soon to be renamed juke joint. Not sure where this will go but follow along. The windows appear to be pre Grandt Line era plastic.

Yeah it is. If only I could drink. Blood thinners ya know.
20250208_131944.jpg
The windows and spec sheet from R.C.Beaumont. All the wood is present but the door is missing. Looks like some 3d printed stuff on the horizon. I just love these old kits. Nothing is precise like laser cut kits. I'm now entering the twilight zone. I will start by dunking the wood pieces in stain.
Oh great laser cut saloon doors and 3 hinges. Early laser cut therapy. Die stamped hinges?

Great chance to do some kitbashing Philip.
Philip,
Interesting kit and I'm sure you will do a great job. Looking forward to what you do with the missing parts and the 3D aspect.

TY Tom, The plan so far is to 3d print all exterior windows and saloon door. Add a deck to the 2d floor and perhaps side it with weathered tin. I like board (barn) construction but these stamped siding sheets just don't give a draftee look. The front walk is decked in an unconventional way and needs a redo. I'm still imagineering this one.
Philip looks like a fun project; I'll be following along for sure.
Philip, nice to find a kit with that kind of price tag.
Looks like you've got a good plan on how to construct it.
Good looking structure Philip, I'll be looking in..... :)
Howdy Philip, I agree with the die-cut thought, just like old model plane kits. I'm looking forward to your 3D supplement. Have fun, mike
Philip looking forward to the build.
Jerry
Thanks for the encouragement Larry, Rick, Greg, and Mike.
Changing course and scribing in wood grain and joints plus adding nail holes. I started on the back wall and it looks a lot older now. Still trying to de-fuzz the back side with a folded 600 sandpaper, a red Scotch-bright pad. I'm on the fence about dunking the plywood in water based stain. I may just add washes of paint.
Have a great Sunday!

Making a bit of progress on this old kit. All the wood is weathered and this pattern shown below is going on the printer in a moment. I ended up staining all the wood after testing a few pieces instead of painting.
Showing inside and out with duplicate prints. They may work. The mullions look a bit large.........

Maybe just a tad on the Mullins but it depends how "fussy" you want to get.
Philip, hope the print goes well.
Looking forward to the print.

I have version 4 on the printer. 1st one was top right with trim applied
2d version are with movable 6 lite panes
3rd set was a disaster.
Rough and warped.
More later.
Those saloon door hinges might be diecast dollhouse furniture hardware. For a dollhouse-scale baker's cabinet, for example. Because I remember walking in to a broad-spectrum hobby shop in Ottawa, years ago, that catered to plastic modellers, model railroaders, radio-controlled aircraft kamikazes, and dollhouse modellers. Which I hadn't known was a Thing. They had stuff in the dollhouse display cabinet that I hadn't imagined existed.

No. Rick it was oriented wrong in my eyes and ruining the detail. If you look closely the muntins have a distorted look. It is called 3d elephants foot caused by overexposing the first few layers. They are not at true right angles were they intersect.

Finally have some good prints. They are sitting in the rough openings not nailed or level. I trimmed them with 2x6's, a bit heavy but close enough. The top sash is fixed and the bottom slides in the track. The saloon had a swinging door included with the kit that was discarded. I'll come up with something.
They look pretty good to me Philip!
Jerry
Philip, I'm glad you got prints that you're happy with.
Waiting to see now what you come up with for the swinging door.
Howdy Philip,
You have been busy! Nice work on the windows. They look terrific in the structure.

Thanks! I have the floor down, 3 walls up and the second story floor joist are in. Needs decked, Oops and the saloon door is done but need a floor in order to proceed. Fresh outta jamb saw for the trim. See demo.
Philip,
The windows turned out great and look like a natural fit to the structure. Well done.
Tom
Thank you Tom!
Added the floors inside. Eleven foot ceilings! Added the porch floor, door jambs and saloon doors. All the frames were painted with ivory followed by a wash of alcohol, india ink, and engine black. The plan is to add piers (brick) to get it off the ground. The porch roof is next.....may lean to or pitch. LEDs, roof trim and other details will follow. Comments and suggestion needed. Thanks for bearing with my molasses updates!

Windows are installed. I also printed a bunch of brick piers. They are simple and no texture. I sanded a few lightly with 150 to give them a bit of texture. A heap to go followed by paint. The experiment will continue tomorrow.

Trim is on and shingles are being applied. Also shown are the handmade lights. As Tom mentioned thread the wires before bending. The jigs are shown and made from HO drivers screwed to hardwood. I use K&S 3/32 OD brass tube. The shades are 3d printed on my home printer.

A quick update. High and dry.
Philip, never been to Evansville, IN for swap meets, but have gone to the towns of Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and Terra Haute for RR shows and conventions when we lived in the Midwest. Will follow your build ... Tommy
Hi Tommy,
I usually visit the narrow gauge shows south of Indy along 65. Narrow Gauge activity has been sparse in this area since covid 19 passed through. I just can't stand travelling for long distances.
Daniel Banks has sponsored a few NG shows recently but I missed them as he didn't put the word out.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/767913726640244?hoisted_section_header_type=recently_seen&multi_permalinks=8790099357754934
The piers are ready for installation but I want to finish all the signage and bling. Not sure where to say good enough as I found some benches and picnic tables in my stash. I really don't even have a place to plant it so I may have to add another section to my layout.
The entire project was based on the last photo. The sign was found in New Orleans long ago. Brainstorming I decided to resurrect the joint into the roadhouse your seeing. The signs were are all 3d printed. I'm still searching for some old liquor posters and such. Signage is not attached or weathered yet. The bottom Juke joint sign was printed first and is a bit large.
Thanks for looking!
Philip
Philip great work on those signs and piers.

Thanks again!
So here is the latest with all the extras installed. Brick piers, stove pipe still working on. Signage is so time consuming looking for matching era stuff.
The dreadful roof was toned down with more brown chalk. I got carried away with the black and made a huge mess and dry brushing the excess didn't work or an alcohol thinning made it worst! The joint is to be heated by coal and wood as needed but........woah Sally don't get to carried away.
Still a ton of work remains as the brainstorming continues. It's a seedy place but not a whore house, nor will it be.
Philip
Great job on the build Philip.
Great colors on the roof and walkway in front.
Maybe some more brown out back to cover the darker areas.
Not sure why wiping down with alcohol wouldn't remove some of the chalk and lighten it some.
Philip very nice work on this build. It has a lot of character.
Thank you Curt!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rick most likely because I cut it with water when adding the chalks. It really absorbed into the grain is my guess. I use Micromark chalk so who knows, it may not even be chalk. I need to invest in some Rembrandts chalks. If anything it needs a light tan going over?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks Larry! Where did you purchase your chalks from?

So this corner is hammered down minus some bling details and chalk. I need to hide that track nail sticking out like a sore thumb.
That storm is getting closer, I'm an old human weather vane.

Bottle ops. Just for fun. Was going to add a dock and door but being this part will seldom be viewed, why waste the effort? The tree was made from an old dead green pepper plant that was looking at me. The sunflowers aren't anything to jump and down about but look ok from a distance.
