Now that i have the structures for the Foss Landing kit done I am starting on the shipyard main building. Got some staining done so far and that is anout all.

Great start Dale.
Dale,
I'm on the front row for this one.
Tom
Looking forward to this build Dale.
Jerry
Howdy Dale, Away we go. Have fun, mike
I'm here to follow along.
Count me in Dale, I'll be watching..... :)
Dale great start, looks like a fun kit to build; enjoy.
I have had a stupid busy week so not much progress to share. But I did manage to get the siding done on the main walls
One issue I had was warping. Instructions say that these walls in the kit will not warp due to the layered construction. Well they did warp so I ended up adding internal bracing to solve the problem. It would have been easier to add them first. I should have seen it coming. Oh well problem is fixed so I suppose it isn't really a problem after all.IMG_3891.jpeg
Up next is the dormers.
Great job with the strip wood.
Nice colors on the siding.
Looking good, Dale. The different directions of the siding stand out nicely.
Mike
I like the coloring nice job!
Jerry
Dale,
I really like the weathering on the individual boards. Great job.
Tom
Thank you everyone for the kind comments. All the color and weathering for this structure has all been done with pan pastels so far.
I have the dormers ready ao I guess it is time for corner trim and windows/doorsIMG_3902.jpeg
Dale, I really like how SW kits have you color wood. Your build is coming along nicely.

Thanks Curt. Yea I agree with you on the sierra west technique for coloring strip wood. The only change I made to the technique was using pan pastels rather than quality chalk sticks. But to me they are the same, pan pastels are just in a pan rather than a stick. Still it is quality pastels.
I think the main walls are about ready for assembly followed by one more light layer of weathering. There is a ton of work on these 4 walls.image.jpg
I tried flipping the picture but that one function put the picture over the size limit...oh well.
Great modeling Dale.
Dale, the walls look perfect.
I got the dormers all glued up and the roof on. Shingles are next. IMG_4063.jpegIMG_4065.jpeg
Howdy Dale,
The shipyard is coming along nicely. The main building looks great, well constructed, and colored. Congrats and good luck with the shingles.
Have fun,
mike

Thank you Mike
Dale, it looks great.
Keep going.
Great work Dale!
Nice work Dale. Your coloring is perfect.
Jerry
Great progress Dale..... 8)
I have spent several hours coloring shingles. The technique I used was similar to the technique from the kit instructions. First crack at coloring a roof using this technique. First step is to separate all the rows of shingles off of the sheet, then color each strip separate. Sierrawest recommends using high quality pastel chalks like Rembrandt brand. I did not want to spend $70 on chalks so I figured pan pastels are really the same thing just in a pan rather than a stick, although the stick would have been a little quicker.
Second step is scraping some powder, I used Raw Umber, onto the strip them dabbed (not brushed) with alcohol. This is followed immediately with some white lightly dabbed on.
Next step, after that is dry then do the same technique with some gray. That is what step I am on currently. There are 218 shingle strips with the kit so it takes a bit of time for each step.
I can't wait to get them put on the roof and see how this technique compares to my normal technique of coloring all the shingles while still in a sheet...which is about 500 times faster. I am hoping for the best but ready to toss them all in the round file and use different shakes if I don't like how they look. We will seeIMG_4068.jpeg
IMG_4074.jpegIMG_4075.jpeg
I'm watching your shingle approach with a lot of interest. I wonder, though, if it would be better to leave the shingles on the sheet and apply a lot of the coloring vertically across the shingles. Treating each row of shingles as you're doing could create rows of shingles that are kinda monochrome and streaky across the roof. (I've seen that a couple of times with some approaches I've used.)
The other advantage of coloring while assembled is you can use make-up sponges and brushes more easily.
But of course, Brett usually knows what he's talking about ;D
dave
Dale, I think the way you're doing it creates a better random color.
They'll look great once you've got them on the structure.
Howdy Dale,
I agree with Rick, the random colors look good. I'm looking forward to seeing them on the roof.
Have fun,
mike
Doing great things Dale.
WOW, that is a lot of work co colour shingles :o
Can't argue with the results though, the colouring looks fantastic Dale.
Dale,
The build is wonderful and I like how you are weathering the shingles. As Rick said, it does give them a more random appearance.
Tom
Indeed, a lot of work. Probably worth it in the end.
Mike
Hello Dale, I agree with everyone else. It was a lot of work to color the shingles that way, but I think the end result will be well worth the effort.
Great looking building for sure.
Looking forward to how the shingles look when there on the roof.
Jerry
Dale very nice looking building and I'm curious about the shingles as well
after they're applied. Keep up the great work.
Thanks everyone for the kind comments, I appreciate I have started with some shingles finally. Can't even quess how many hours I have into getting them ready. So far I am likinghow it is turning out, but really kust getting started. Hopefully with a couple of evenings work the main roof ahingles will be nothing but a memory.

Howdy Dale,
The shingles look terrific and complement the landing structure. Your technique for the shingles is one I'll copy.
Have fun,
mike
Dale, those shingles look perfect.
Great looking shingles.
I must say the extra preparation has paid off. They do look perfectly 1/2 lapped and the show is correct with valley's. Something a lot of modelers rush to finish. Have you been watching Norm Abrams?
8)
Hello Dale, the shingles are coming along nicely. The time spent putting in the flashing on the valleys will pay off in the final appearance of the roof.
Coming on really nicely, Dale.
Shingles look great and its nice to see the valley prep before laying the shingles. I also much prefer the turned up tar paper on the veranda to pitch. Are you planning on flashing protrusions such as chimneys in the same manner?
Cheers, Mark.
Thanks again everyone for the kind words.
I have to give a lot of credit to Brett Gallant over at Sierrawest. He has made it easy to get good results including a cutting template for the shingles thats takes away a lot if the quess work. All I can say is I am impressed with this kit, the attention to detail and explanation of techniques in the instructions, quality of laser cut parts and the quality of the 3d printed details. Its all over the top.
A little more progress:

IMG_4112.jpegIMG_4108.jpeg
The roofing looks very good.
Dale, it's looking better and better.
Dale a very nice job on those shingles. Keep up the great work.
Jerry
Not much modeling time this week, but I was able to make progress on the shingles. I am down to the ridge cap and cupola. I think the shingles came out OK. Certainly a lot of work but its not like I need to hurry amd get it done. Just these small victories works for me, but I do have my eye on the prize, which is a completed scene on my layout.
IMG_4153.jpegIMG_4152.jpegIMG_4154.jpeglittl
Very nice Dale.
Roof looks great.
8) Nice work Dale.
Coming together nicely Dale, excellent..... 8)
Howdy Dale,
Nice work on the shingles. Your patience in applying them resulted in a fine-looking roof. Congrats!
Have fun,
mike
Dale,
I've been lurking and the shingles look great and the weathering sure matches the structure weathering.
Well done sir.
Tom
It has been 2 or 3 weeks since my last post so time for an update, although not much to update!! My motivation for modeling has been off bit I thimk I am finally feeling motivated again. I did manage to finally complete the roof and rafter ends. Now it is time to start on the additions.IMG_4188.jpegIMG_4185.jpegIMG_4182.jpegIMG_4181.jpegIMG_4180.jpegIMG_4178.jpeg
Outstanding Dale.
Nice job on the roofs. Looks great on the wharf.
Jeff
Dale, great job on the roofs.
Great great build....everything looks great -the shingles and decking, in particular, are outstanding.
John
Howdy, Dale, the rafter tails certainly complement the fine roof. The wharf is looking fantastic. Have fun, mike
Dale beautiful job on the roofs!!
Jerry
WOWSA! 8)
Dale,
How many years have those shingles been installed? I'd guess 10 years at least. 8)
Great job on the roof.
I am making some progress, I finahed up the warehouse addition and am reasy to move onto the office additionIMG_4191.jpegIMG_4190.jpeg
Perfect.
A fine job you should be very happy with results so far.
Jerry
I'd live there! 8)
The yard masters office addition is coming right alongIMG_4194.jpeg
Great weathering Dale.
Very nice!
Howdy Dale,
Your work on the structures is excellent. They look weather-beaten but serviceable.
Have fun,
mike
8) Another good en Dale!
The yardmasters Office addition is done. Roof mounted water tank os nextIMG_4209.jpegIMG_4208.jpegIMG_4207.jpegIMG_4206.jpeg
Dale you did an awesome job on the wharf and buildings. Are the rails actually metal or thin wooden strips simulating rail? The shape seems strange...to me anyway! ::)
Really nice Dale
I especially love the wharf decking and pilings...and the rusty rails are perfect
John
Dale, it's looking better all the time.
Howdy Dale,
This build is amazing. Every bit you add takes it to the next level. The office construction adds to the perfection of the rest of the build. Congrats!
Have fun,
mike
Nice One!
Thanks everyone for the kind words, very much appreciated.
A couple of you guys mentioned the wharf in my pictures. Thank you for the compliments on that. But the shipyard is actually going on a different area of the layout. The wharf just makes a good spot to take some pictures. In the future I am going to scratch build the structures for the wharf. I have one built but I am on the fence if I will use it. Time will tell.
I was able to get the roof mounted water tank done, now it will be loading docks. I still have quite a few details for the roof but I am going to hold off on those until the build is closer to completion.
IMG_4219.jpegIMG_4221.jpegIMG_4222.jpeg
Very nice Dale. You're doing a really great job on everything.
Jerry
The tank looks great Dale.
Dale,
I agree, it all looks great.
Tom
Thank you all for the kind words, very much appreciated.
I have been working on the docks. A little more time consuming than I was expecting. Next Ill be building the iutbuildings and ship under construction before moving on to the diorama and final placement on the layout.IMG_4285.jpegIMG_4286.jpegIMG_4287.jpegIMG_4289.jpegIMG_4289.jpeg
The barnacles look really good, but I'd suggest painting (airbrushing, if you have one) some darker color just above the barnacles to show the high water line.
dave
Everything looks fabulous. I agree with Dave that the barnacles are a great detail.
Very nice indeed! Looks great. :)
Just strolled through this thread... Solid skill, and beautiful work.
This kit was sold out many moons ago so I never got to experience building it. Now that it's available again I have nowhere to put it. Besides that my horizon gets shorter and shorter.
I'll just have to enjoy this build and vicariously experience it through this thread.
Again really nice work.
--Rich
Well executed!
Dale, I have no nits to pick. ;D
It all looks excellent.
Dale what a great job your doing on this.
Jerry
Dale,
Just getting back to this thread. Looks most excellent to me, wharf included.
Tom
