Title: Tuesday, January 20, 2026
Post by: Zephyrus52246 on January 20, 2026, 08:19:27 AM
Morning all,

One below zero here this morning, at least we'll get to 25 so it's "warmer" than yesterday.

Need to start my building thread on the kit I've started.

Resized some Narrow Gauge Convention pictures, I don't know if I'd have the patience to build a trestle this large.

A large trestle is a lot of repeated assemblies, so particularly with jigs, etc, that's not quite so bad.  I know the most time-consuming model I've built was the machine shop.  All told, probably 9-10 months end-to-end time in that project.

The dogs are at the groomers, so the house is too quiet.  In a bit, I'll head down, do a half hour on the exercise machine, and then some work on the bridge.

Springfield this year is looking to be cold, single digits both days.  That could cut down on the families attending, which is not good for the numbers, but probably OK for those going to buy, rather than look...

From what i've been reading recently, Jeff, I'd imagine the process would not be as fearsome as I'd been thinking.  Lots of repetition as Dave said, none of it terribly complex.  Now, add in a curved roadway and that might make one think a bit.... :P Campbell does include plans for curved trestles, #303 and #304.  Challenge for me is trying to replace track that is already in place with a trestle and making it match the curve.

I did this one in just one day, yesterday.  Campbell kit #302 HO Pile Trestle Open Deck.  It was a test for building something along the line of your photo.

The jig I made from styrene.   I DID assemble the bents a day or two earlier.

Smashing good times ::)  on the highways in our area the last 36 hours.  Hundreds of body shop slots filling up fast. :o

Just into double digits, at 11am. Cold and calm here. Deer were sleeping out under the pines this morning. One has a severely injured leg and hobbles off as it gets lighter out.

Indoor activity has an appeal today.  ;D

Good morning, all. I woke up to about 14F, now it's 21F and bright sun behind partly cloudy.  I've read about a few accidents in New England during this last storm, but nothing like I-196.

Jeff, I built a trestle about 5 bents long for my highschool era layout.  Stand-in for a drawspan which would have been difficult to put on a 24" radius curve.  I still have it, but likelihood of re-use is near zero.
