Title: 2025-2026 Winter Challenge - AMB Interlocking Tower
Post by: ACL1504 on January 23, 2026, 04:38:06 PM
Like Dr. Jeff, I've chosen the American Modelers Builders Interlocking Tower kit as my '25 challenge build.  AMB made several different kits. I understand the owner passed away and to date no body is picking up the line.

Many of you know I just can't build a kit straight from the box. I tend to think outside the box and add my own spin to the kit. This build will be no different. I certainly won't be doing 50 pages on this build as I did for last years challenge.

I do have a few ideas I'll add to the build but it will be pretty much a kit build.

Here are the obligatory photos of the kit.

The walls a slot and tab. Not my favorite type of kit.

Over the past few years, I looked at this kit trying to decide to build it.

In the next photo note the missing roof brace.-It fell out at one point while checking the kit. I have no idea where it may be.

I'll need to make another one.

When built, it will replace the FOS Tower shown below.

The FOS Tower will be relocated at the north end of the diesel lubritorium.

I used the other roof piece and trace it on the same carrier sheet.

Fast forward and I cut it out and made the initial test fit. It does fit and looks like the other one.

My copy is on the left.

I went ahead and glued the parts to the interior roof section.

Done for today.

Tom, you know as usual I'll be here to follow along.
Nice job replicating the lost piece.
You'll find that piece after you're finished building the kit?  ;)

I know you have a good reason, but why are you switching the towers around?

Rick,

Thanks for jumping in and following along and thank you for the nice compliment.

Replacing the one tower is just personal preference. Call it for aesthetic purposes if you will. The current tower is a FOS tower I built some 10 years ago. I like the kit but it just doesn't look like a signal tower to me.

Here is how the roof panels fit on the roof supports. I'll need to sand the edges to get a better fit. Although the roofing material will cover the roof, I still want it to be a better fit.

I fit each wall section with the floor and marked each one where the floor boards meet. I'll explain why later in the build.

I also marked the lower portion of where the interior roof piece sits inside each wall.

After doing this it was great to see all the lines were in the same position on each wall.

I used the NWSL Chopper and cut several HO scale 10X10s for interior bracing.

With some side bracing in place, I test fitted two walls with the floor  (not glued) and marked the location of the braces.

With the four walls partially braced, I stacked them and added weights until the glue dried.

I say partially braced as I'll add more when these are dry.

I taped the four walls together to make sure the bracing didn't interfere with the walls fitting properly.

I then test fitted the top piece with the roof brackets. It fit nicely!

The piece in the following photo, serves as the second floor ceiling and the base for the roof brackets.

Notice the short bracket ends that extend out over the roof base.

I plan on lighting the second floor with partial interior. This piece will be removed several times and the potential for these short extensions to break exist.

Here is how I added more extensions to the brackets.

I glued HO scale 8X8s to each side of the kit bracket and when the glue was dry, shaved and sanded the 8X8s to the original bracket angle.

Now, I've more than doubled my extensions.

I stained the four exterior walls with Hunterline Light Gray A&I. I stained the upper inside wall sections also. The walls still warped.

I placed weights on each wall until the stain was completely dry. This was overnight.

The next morning, all four walls were flat.

"Holy Driftwood" stain had a slight green tinge to it.

And on HunterLine, I talked to Bill Alcorn (B&B Hobbies) at Springfield.  They have good stockage of all of the HunterLine stains, with a crate of Driftwood due in this coming week.  No business connection, just someone I've enjoyed talking to for 20+ years of attending train shows...

Yes, it did but not as much green as the Floquil Natural Pine.

I do have one of Hunterline's Driftwood and only six bottles of the "Holy" Floquil Dreftwood Stain.

I chose Floquil Reefer White for the tower color. I opted not to go with a two tone color scheme.

The railroad colors for the A&S RR are dark green trim and white for the main structures.

The Atlantic Coast Line RR had several different color schemes for trim with the main color of white. The ACL freight stations were first white with chocolate brown trim. Later they had green trim and even purple trim with the white. Finally, the ACL had all white for the station colors.

As I mentioned, I previously stained the exterior walls with Hunterline Light Gray A&I. I used the reefer white and applied a very thin white wash to the stained walls. I let this dry overnight.

Since I'm adding some interior detail, I wanted to have a light color on the interior walls. I chose Tamiya Sky. It is Light Green in color but called Sky on the bottle.

To protect the interior green, I placed blue tape across the back to cover the color.

I then applied a heavier wash to the exterior. After covering one wall, I simply turned the wall over and pressed it down on a paper towel. I didn't move the wall, just pressed down and then lifted it.

For added interior detail, I decided to have some wainscoting and trim.

I found a small sheet of material in the scrap box and stained it with the Floquil Teak Flo-Stain.

I measured and cut the wainscoting and glued them on the lower portion of the wall, just below the windows.

The wall in the next photo won't face the layout isle and thus this interior wall won't be seen by any visitor. Still it didn't fit in my nature to know the interior wasn't complete.

I needed to run the wainscoting around the interior brace.

Looking terrific, Tom!

I did stop by yesterday and left a comment, but cyber space seems to have gobbled it up.  Knowing your 'nature' I'm surprised you didn't mitre the corners on the wainscoting!  It looks great.

Cheers, Mark.

Ruh-Roh, snit happens!

I grabbed the tower side and snap.

Glued it back together and added a short piece of 4X4 to support the break.

Since I started the build, I was undecided as to what color or colors I was going to use. At first, I was going to make it an all white tower including windows, doors and trim.

The official colors of the Atlantic and Southern RR are White and Green. White on the walls and green for windows, doors and trim.

I decided to go with the green windows, doors and some of the trim.

I painted the windows with Floquil Weyerhauser Green.

Since I painted the interior walls with a light green, I couldn't very well leave the back side of the windows white.

I used the same wall green and painted the interior side of the windows.

The window on the right is painted the wall color. Painting the interior side only made sense.

Sorry for taking so long to pop in and catch up. I always love following your builds and this one is no exception. I picked up on the various color schemes the Atlantic Coast Line used for their stations. The Lady Lake station (now museum) recently reworked its paint scheme to the old white with light purple trim. It looks good. I also want to say I love the screens! Nice touch.

I realized I got glue in the opening when gluing the walls together. I thought I avoided this.

Here is how I removed the glue without destroying the build.

I used the Dremel tool and a small drill bit. I used the Dremel as a router and routed out the glue.

Now it fits as it should, snug and flush to the wall.

I wanted to use some interlocking tower control levers in the tower.  If I couldn't find any, I was going to scratch build them. Luckily, I found a company that makes them. They come ten to a pack.

These are HO scale and very well done.

I painted the mainline levers red, siding white and interchange tracks yellow.

I scratch built a platform and found a tower operator.

Joann Fabric went bust last year, too many billionaires and financial wizards juggling their books and assets, I gather.  Was your roll sold as Tulle?  I have a yard-wide bundle of Tulle but it might not be as fine as yours - I've mostly used it for HO chain-link fence.  The best HO window screen I've seen so far was some silver Xmas wrapping ribbon:

James,

I agree, too many bean counters can ruin a good business.

The wedding tulle is great for chain link fencing. I've used the tulle material for my fences.

This isn't wedding tulle, Its a fancy ribbon material. Robert Stanley specializes in ribbons.

The tower kit includes all the trim needed to add to the tower corners.

I looked closely at them and although they are acceptable, I chose to use scale strip wood instead.

I measured the kit pieces and used corresponding scale strip wood. I painted the strip wood with full strength Floquil Weyerhauser Green. When dry, I cut and glued them to the tower.

Once the glue on the trim pieces was dry, I used Floquil Grime and dry brushed the trim.

I then made several test fittings of the roof panels. I found that one piece fit better then the other. Not sure why as the two sets of panels were all the same size.

When I found what fit best. I removed the pieces and labeled them as shown below.

NOTE: You are viewing the underside of the panels in these two photos.

Also, for a better fit on the roof tabs, I sanded the underside of the pieces. I think you can see the slight sanding angles of the pieces in the photo below.

NOTE: The lines on each panel are where the upper edge of the tower walls fit under the panels.

Here is a look at the rough corners on the roof.

I then glued the four roof panels in place.

Once the roof glue was thoroughly dry, I lightly sanded the sharp edges of the upper side of the panels. This gives me a nice smooth transition from one edge to the other.

The kit trim pieces are all laser cut. They are supposed to be 1x6 and 1x8 pieces.  The laser cut trim pieces are slightly smaller than the 1x6 and 1x8 scale lumber.

The laser cuts at an angle and the edges, called kerfs, are burnt. The edges need to be lightly sanded to remove the kerfs. Also, the material used for the trim pieces doesn't take staining very well.

This next photo shows the kit trim and my scale trim. The green is Northeastern Scale Lumber in 1X8.

The kit trim piece is also a 1X8 trim lumber. It does appear more narrow.

This next photo shows the kit 1X8 on top of the scale lumber 1X8.

Same size but more narrow.

They look the same but aren't. I prefer to have crisp edges on the trim and not slightly rounded pieces.

I raided my roofing material box in order to find a suitable material.

Here is a sheet of South River Model Works sh8ingles.

Northeastern two tone brown shingles.

And finally, Stoney Creek gray rolled asphalt roofing material.

The Atlantic and Southern RR Board of Directors wouldn't approve the expenditure for the fancy roof shingles. After all, the A&S
RR can't justify the expense on a standard interlocking tower.

The board did approve the purchase of a few rolls of the standard gray asphalt rolled roofing material.

The kit included the laser cut rolled roofing pieces. Each piece fits on the roof.

I used these kit pieces as a pattern and cut out the similar pieces from the gray roofing stuff.

The tower build is progressing well. The interior view adds a lot of interest to the structure. Glad the A&S
RR could afford the shingle material. Good luck with the desk quest.

Going with the prototypical roofing material also makes sense.

Tom,

Great progress in the tower.  The lighted interior adds life to the scene.  I have no idea where one can find an HO desk, although one could scratchbuild one.

Going with the rolled roofing makes sense it that is what is common for the railroad location.

Looking good, Tom.

Scale structures do some nice looking desks - although a bit pricy.

https://scale-structures.com/5000-fezziwigs-furniture-interior-designs/?page=7

Re adding rafter tails - It seems to me this roof is set up like it has soffits.  This would mean the rafters would be hidden above these.  Typically you would just see soffits, fascia and guttering.

Cheers, Mark.

I do have a couple of desks but they don't fit. I think it is because the tower interior space is small and the fact I put the levers to much in the center.

OK...  You could do what the prototype did.  Cut two blocks the correct width, glue on some "drawer fronts" and then put a correct width plank between those two blocks.   ;D

By the way, a question on Florida railroad prototype practices:  How well would rolled roofing work in a hurricane?  Would that be used because it's low cost, and replaced after a hurricane?

Mark, Cheers,

I have looked at the SS Ltd. desks and they are to big. As I mentioned above, the interior space is small and I glued the levers to much in the center of the interior.

Ref. the rafter tails. I agree in part. The roof angle also helped keep the rain our. The windows are not much lower than the roofs edge. I guess it was also a matter of money to add the soffits and fascia along with the gutter.

The first photo is a freight station on the old Seaboard RR line in Apopka, Fl.  The roof is extended but has the exterior rafter tails and a very narrow fascia.

The next two photos were taken of an old freight station on the Maryland and Pennsylvania RR, the MA & PA just north of Baltimore, MD.

Granted these are freight stations, but the concept is basically the same.

I believe it was a cost factor in covering the rafter tails and adding a fascia.

I'm suggesting solid blocks, rather than 2x4 legs.  If you use a piece of wood maybe 1/4x1/4, cut to the right height and width, you can add 'drawer fronts' really easily to get something that looks much more like a "desk" than a "table."

Not the best photo, but there's a blueprint cabinet and a pair of filing cabinets done that way against the back wall in the drafting room.
IMG_1158.jpeg
The filing cabinet drawers show up pretty well in this photo.  The other tables and desks in that room came from the LM3 kit.

This little tower has a chimney. I don't have room for a wood heater so I won't be using it. However, the chimney hole was drilled with the roof panel flat.

This tower has electric heat anyway.  ;D

When the chimney goes in the hole this is what it look like.

Yes, the soled blocks would/will work. However, where the desk is located the legs won't show.

I next used the kit stair brackets and glued them in place.

The wood used in this kit is very porous. When I stained the pieces with the white wash (Floquil Reefer White and thinner), the pieces swelled with the paint.

I forgot to take photos of how I opened the swollen areas. I used small and narrow hobby files and filed the sides of the opening so the stringers would fit in the slots.

Thanks for the follow up photos, Tom.  Some great shots there.

My mistake - I thought the roof piece was a pyramid with a flat bottom.  I went back to the start of your thread and relooked at the photos.  There is a slight problem with thickness, with the material provided in the kit probably being a scale 5 1/2" thick, while the prototype looks to be 1" plus roofing material - but I don't think you would notice.  I quite like the idea of rafters with a 3x2" running along underneath.  Something quite different that I haven't seen before.

Cheers, Mark.

The thickness on the roof panels is 5 inches as you said. A bit thick for a model.

I'll let the roofing paper hang over a little and this should help disquise the thickness some.

I added the kit stringers, steps and railing to the tower. After the glued dried, I did a little touch up of the white paint.

The kit has a door frame that fit around the upper door. The kit also has this door closed. I'm making my door open for another view of the inside of the tower and the interlocking levers.

With the door closed, the frame would fit properly. However, my door open so it was necessary to cut off the bottom portion of the frame.

This next photo shows the door frame in place.

I wasn't satisfied with not having a desk in the tower office area. For a desk to fit, I needed to removed the already glued levers.

I used a small bowl of warm water and using an eye dropper, added a few small drops of warm water to the area around the lever base.

Dave,

I agree and this one I knew would turn out fine. I applied little glue to hold the lever base.

When I finally got the lever base out of the tower, I noticed some of the stain was removed with the glue. Not a big deal though.

The tower floor was damp,  so I used a paper towel and stuffed it into the tower for 30 minutes to absorb the moisture out of the floor. I believe this helped to not have a warped floor.

I didn't glue the new lever base in place but you can see I now have room for a desk. And, the light spot is no longer visible.

Done for today.

Finally back at the build. We all know how 1:1 stuff gets in the way of our modeling.

I wanted the tower to be on a concrete base and not just plopped down on God's Green Acre.

I pulled out some spare basswood from the spare stash. I found one and cut a base for this tower.

I cut a base 17X27 HO scale feet.

I outlined where the tower fit on the slab and also marked a interior square to be removed to allow for the lighting.

I cut out the center square and also needed to square the lower left corner. It was a little off to my eye.

Work on the base continues. I made a test fit on the site location.

I then outlined the base on the scenery and removed all that was going to be under the base.

I'll let this area dry for a couple of days.

Yesterday I sealed the base with Elmer's White Glue. This morning I painted the base with full strength Floquil Aged Concrete.

When dry to the touch, but not cured, I re-scribed the expansion lines and cracks.

Once the paint was dry to the touch, but not yet cured, I stained it with Hunterline Light Gray A&I mix.

Adding the stain while the paint is still curing allows the stain to become one with the paint and not just a stain on top of the paint.

I added  a little yellow glue to the sides. I tried white glue but it didn't want to hold as well.

I painted some scale 2X6s white and when dry, cut the to fit under the eaves. I made sure they were long enough as once glued in place will be trimmed.

I replaced the roof and made sure it still fit snug on the top of the walls.

I chose Weber Costello pastel to weather the roof. This set of pastels range from dark gray to white.

I used four different shades of gray to weather the roof.

I don't have much to finish on the interlocking tower. I'm waiting on the delivery of the desk and I still need to make a sign for the tower.

The tower is located on the south end of Sanlando on the Midlands level. The tower will be designated as SL Tower. The SL will be on the tower just below the second level windows.

Once the concrete base was secure, I added some scenery material. White glue was "painted" on the layout around the base. Three different Scenic Express and Woodland Scenic material was spread over the while glue.

I then lightly misted the area with a mix of warm water and liquid dish soap. I used a plastic eye dropper and then applied matte medium. After the matte medium, I sprinkled on some Scenic Express material.

Butty Bob,

Thank you. I like this better than the FOS tower in this location.

The FOS tower was moved but not to a permanent spot as yet.

I'll add more when the desk arrives and I find a tower operator to sit and boss the other guy.

A couple more figures and a vehicle or two will be added then as well.

Done for today.

The tower's position at the front of the layout plus those big windows justifies all the effort you put into the interior.  Well Done!

Dave,

Thank you very much. I agree, if it were back further, the extra details would be on another "up front" model.

I was thinking about this last night.  Would you want to add the interlocking rods, or at least a box running alongside the track to simulate the enclosed rods?

Dave,

I was actually thinking about doing that very thing. It would help with points on the Winter Challenge. However, I just don't have the time. I do have it on the list for done the road layout improvements.

The Inter-action desk and chair arrived a few days ago.

The instructions are in the form of photos of how the desk parts fit together. The parts fit together very well.

Through the magic of cropping and posting, the desk and chair are finished.
