Title: Friday, January 30, 2026
Post by: Zephyrus52246 on January 30, 2026, 08:52:09 AM
Morning all,

Single digit here again, headed to a high of 17.  Still in the deep freeze, but at least no snow.

Tiring day at work yesterday.  Strep and influenza still rampant.

Maybe some work on the kit later, but I suspect more of a lazy Friday vibe here.  8)

8) Bright sun but super cold, -3o in S Central lower Michigan this morning, deer were sleeping under the pines early and now are out playing in traffic most likely.

I worked on the layout some yesterday, added a 12" extension where I hope to build the trestle.  I also dirtied up an engine I just got.

Much of the afternoon was spent preparing a batch of bean soup.... :-\  it turned out, ok, just not really my style.  No real expensive ingredients except my time.  Won't be saving it.  It didn't like me.  ::)

Layout work planned for today.  Fri night hoops has the SPARTANs hosting the A2 teamwho have a pretty good team.  Will be quite a game if my guys play well.

That's all I've got.  Get some rest, Jeff.  Thanks for what you do.

Karl, did you start with dried beans?   It makes a big difference how many times you change the soaking water before you start cooking the soup.   Sunday I made a big batch of chile, which lasted for 3 more meals.

Looks like the weather will be too cold for Scotch Club tomorrow, 2nd week in a row.  Sigh...

I haven't heard the usual complaints about "Springfield Crud," and fortunately I didn't catch anything.  (I did take extra Vitamin C and Zinc the day before and the day after, just to give the immune system a bit of a boost.)

Off to the train room in a bit.

Good afternoon, all.  Sun outside is bright enough, even at 9F with gusty winds, so my driveway is melting off where the ice is thin. Got my Bolt inspected this morning. After I'd been there for 40 minutes, I asked the guy why it was taking so long. Well, the "tiny government" faction in the NH Legislature had tried to get rid of car inspections this month. But the contractor sued and won because that would violate clean air regs. And I was the first inspection this month at this place.  So when they turned the WIndoze box that queries the car on, it immediately insisted on downloading ALL the updates...

Found a Zillo listing for 114 High in Newburyport, which my wife is building.  Photos show fireplaces inside, even though the chimneys are gone. Now to figure out where the now-vanished chimneys go on the model.

Amazing. Raining like a bugger in the Shuswap at the end of January! Finally getting a chance to get caught up on a new kit design. Playing with COB LED's for signage lighting.  So far, very impressed!

Good Evening Folks;

Late check in for me. I was able to get some design and printing done on the detail parts for people in the Winter Challenge. I've asked most that have started in the Challenge anything they would like they have not seen much for sale. Mark Dalrymple in New Zealand threw a curve ball asking about large wicker baskets that were used to move raw materials in New Zealand during the 1930's. It was a challenge but I think I got it. The first printed samples came out today. Here is one of the photo's Mark sent and the other is a screenshot of the ready to print version with a 6 foot person next to it.

Karl, love the lighting. Jeff I made something similar to your photo starting with a kit Greg DeMayo let me use. Here it is.

That is it for today. Stay warm folks in North America!

I've seen photos of large baskets like that handling other materials, including fruit, vegetables and manufactured goods inside factories. I think most were pre-1920.

Here's a WWI-ish replacement for wicker baskets where materials were moved over a hard floor :

This came from a dumpster in Harverhill, MA outside a former factory being renovated into condos. Stenciled Dandux Canvas Products on one end.  We use it to move firewood.

Hi Guys,
I have been trying to post a picture to support my entry in Dioramas. I keep getting an error message that the script is more that 20000 characters.
