Title: Detailing an Accurail car.
Post by: Deem on March 06, 2026, 05:38:13 PM
I carved off the moulded on details and replaced them with brass. Also added brake levers and redid the undercarriage.

Very nice.  I like the paint as well.

That's some mighty fine modeling.

Thank you Mike. It came painted, but I mixed a batch of various colour tones that matched the car to depict some lighter and darker boards, plus weathered it.

Thanks Rich.

Here is a model, as friend many years ago detailed. I think it is an Athearn flat car. It is not protoypical. I put the boards on it.

Thanks. I'd like to find another CNR accurail boxcar and turn it into a bunk car.

Howdy Deem, the paint and weathering on the Accurail car look fantastic.  Excellent work removing cast-on details.  Have fun, mike

Thanks for the kind words, Mike.

Here are a few other Accurail cars where I removed the cast on details and modified them.

Nice cars, having a big layout I tend to use Accurail as the fall out of the box.  Your improvements are impressive.  The photos look right on and  makes me question them being models. ;)

Accurail cars are a great base for upgrades and kit-bashes. Great work there Deem!

Right out of the box is fine. I have seen a very skilled weatherer that has achieved making moulded on details stand out nicely.

I tried to use his method, but do not have the knack for it yet.  Here is my attempt. I did this car for a ficticious company called Dominion Nail Works.
