Title: Weathering a bridge with oils, acrylic, and pan pastels.
Post by: Deem on April 02, 2026, 02:58:58 PM
I have had this bridge for years, but never had a place on the layout for it. For now, I will used it to display rolling stock or maybe someday in a diorama. This is my first time experimenting with oils to fade and create rust.

The other side is not complete, I will add some rust and graffiti to it eventually.

Thanks Mike.

I'm not trying to figure out what to do with the inside of it, as it looks somewhat toyish.

Thanks Mike.

I'm not trying to figure out what to do with the inside of it, as it looks somewhat toyish.

I suggest you make a ballasted through bridge. Lay a section of track on the current bottom and add ballast and guard rails.  The toylike, unprototypical bottom will be completely covered.

Ooops!Typo. I meant to say I'm now trying to figure out what to do with the inside.

I like your idea.

You bring to mind I ballasted my estuary bridge.

Yes, that's the idea.

About the only alternative would be to cut the sides from the base and build a whole new base following prototype practice.
