Title: FOS barber shop build
Post by: Zephyrus52246 on April 12, 2026, 08:19:28 PM
While waiting for the layout room temp to improve (usually 66 F or 18 C this time of year), and my backdrops to come I thought I'd build a couple of quick kits.  This is a FOS "freebie" barber shop.  These are very basic.  This one at least has a page of bracing instructions, most have none.  The back wall is "paper board" to be covered with a large sign.  Some window/door pieces and some bracing wood/trim wood. A small barber pole and a roof stack included as well as the signs.  A floor/sidewalk is there as well.

I start by squaring the walls as the laser tends to cut at an angle.  Put on the sander and sand just enough to get the "burn marks" off.

I added more bracing than called for.  And of course had a couple of pieces that needed removal/shortening.  It's a habit I'd like to break.  I found Northeastern Flamingo glue at the Davenport train show a few weeks ago.  It's been off their website awhile (they don't ship in the winter as it freezes and ruins the glue).  This has great tack and dries fairly quickly and it's easy to pick off any "glue globs" that may leak out of a joint.

I first stained the sides and window/door sheet with Hunterline Light Gray stain.  Then using a modified sponge painting technique, a mix of tapping/sliding the sponge, colored the sides.

After the painting I add nail holes and a few board ends and lift a few with a chisel blade.  I managed to break the top of one of the side walls and needed to glue it back on.  Broke a wall on the other kit as well.  >:(   I gave this a light spray of dullcoat so it won't react with the oil/mineral spirits black wash.  I did a light wash of this and this is where it stands tonight.  I like to give this a day to dry and then will put the building together.  Need to add the sign to the back wall yet.

Nice start, turning a freebee into a work of art.  I'll be watching.  Mark

I love little structures like this. I'll definitely keep an eye on this build. Thanks for sharing!

Used the supplied window material and added the frames, etc.

I then added some window shades and the signs.  The wall is upside down, not the sign.  Not that I've ever made that mistake.   ::)

Around this time I cut and built some skids with lumber supplied in the supply shed kit.  They won't work with the barber shop, but I'll add them to the finished details drawer.

The front wall is angled, so I needed to sand one of the corner posts down, I put the roof on the sander to make the angle and then sanded the wall itself.

Time to put the walls together.  I started with the 90 degree walls and then added the front.  Again, I needed to trim one of the braces as it interfered with another.

While the structure cured, I started on the roof.  I used some leftover tarpaper from another project.  I painted the visible underside and sides of the roof white first, then added lines on the top to align the paper.  Used the 3M adhesive tape for sticking the paper on.  I use a Sharpie gently along the edges so the white paper doesn't show.

I drilled a hole in the base of the stack to insert a .20" wire which made it easier to paint and drilled a hole in the roof over a wood brace which makes it easier to straighten after attaching.  I put on the corner pieces and the top pieces to the front wall as well.  I should have sanded the angled piece a bit more as there's a slight gap at the corner.   Added some "tar" along the edge and at the base of the stack.

The added sign is a nice extra (especially in a free kit).

As is the barber pole (which I forgot to add for the final pics).

Wow, only eight days to complete.  Probably a record for me.  The base is included, just sprayed with gray primer.

There's supposed to be a window on the back, but some dumba** braced the wrong side and the window would have been in the center of the sign.  Doh!

A fun little kit, and free ain't bad, either!  ;D

Thanks, guys.  I made some mistakes on both, but they turned out OK.  I think the remedy would be building more kits so I don't make the same mistakes.  :)
