Howdy!
I got the opportunity to attend the 2026 NMRA National Train (https://www.nmra2026.org/national-train-show/) show held in Chattanooga for one day. The show was part of the 2026 NMRA Convention (https://www.nmra2026.org/) and was open to the general public on August 1 and 2, 2026. I was there on August 1. Convention goers got a sneak peek on the evening of July 31.
It's been a while since I made one of this threads on this forum so I am throwing a test photo here to loosen up the forum photo posting memory muscles ;D

That's me peeking in lol. I try to stay out of the photos but every now and then I have to prove it was really me clicking the shutter.

This last photo was the "throttle" many of the operators were using. Each operator was using his/her own mobile device to control the trains. It won't be long before a chip is implanted in our brains and we can just think our trains along the track.

I've had to resurrect my old laptop that I have not used in 2 years. Fortunately it still works fine. I bought that laptop back in 2012. My old laptop has the photo editing software I've used for many years to post to the forum sites. I developed a good workflow using Picasa by Google. However, Google killed Picasa long ago and substituted it with something else. I was not able to find a similar replacement to Picasa. I gave it a go on my new laptop with different photo editing tools and it was taking me 3 times as long to edit the photos so it was easier to use my old laptop. Basically what I need is software that will do all of the following in one fell swoop:
- resize multiple photos at once (mobile phone cameras these days make HUGE photo files).
- rename multiple photos at once (this makes it easier for me to sort all the photos into groups that make sense).
- color correct multiple photos at once (this is not always necessary).
- add the "copyright" bug to multiple photos at once (I don't sell my photos but I do expect credit if my photos are shown outside a post I made).
Picasa was excellent at all these and much more. It was a sad day when Google killed it. I've yet to find a suitable replacement.
Perhaps.... AI tools can do all these for me. However, AI seems to be a really dirty word amongst the model train enthusiasts. Heaven knows I do not need any crap about posting photos online. This is meant to be fun so....

I really stayed away for too long. Sometimes one's career gets in the way of having fun. Thank goodness I am making changes to correct that.

Thanks for the photos. I was there for some of the convention as well but grandkids took a lot of my time. I would indeed try the AI approach to correcting photos. It is a powerful tool and like most tools can be used for good or bad. In AI's case it just works so fast it is scary. Anyhow, the N scale lyout was indeed amazing. I did not learn new as much as I hoped but did get to listen to a couple clinics and they were really well attended. Of course it is always fun to hunt for bargains at the show as well. For me it was paints and paint markers.

Grandkids are better than trains.
I asked my AI tool if it could do what I mentioned above. It told me it could not. But, it made some suggestions I could try on my new laptop. However, those suggestions involved multiple software programs in concert to do what Picasa used to do.
They had some "free" clinics for the unwashed masses at the Train Show. I when to one in the afternoon about laser engravers and their advantages for scratch building.

This "cave" was found underneath the scene above and was only visible every so often when its light came on. I had to put the camera along the fascia of the module to capture the hidden cave scene.

The modules above were very popular and crowded during the whole of the show. I did my best to capture what I could without disturbing others at the show. I make it a point to capture the photo I can capture without causing too much disruption to others. After all, the whole point is for everyone to enjoy the show and not for some yahoo to hog the aisle in order to take a photo.

That one was super clever. It was done really well. That one modeler, Jaime Valdez, had several really good modules. Plus, his name is outstanding ;D
Oftentimes a module will pay homage to a popular movie or recognizable popular culture reference. The 2026 NMAR National Train Show wore record setting T-Track module did that for the Bates Motel.

By the way, there is an HO Scale model of this structure. I bought one at the Timonium show the first year of the Craftsman Courtyard for $23. I built it and did a build thread on it. I'd link to it but the photos are no longer online. I had to shut down one of my websites and the photos were at that site. I'm sure the original photo files are somewhere on my old laptop. The finished diorama is somewhere amongst all my other dioramas looking for a home layout. Maybe I'll get started on that soon enough.

There are times when the models are soo good they fool the viewer's eye. At the 2026 NMRA National Train Show the world record setting T-Trak modular layout did not disappoint. I've built a few of the Paper Creek Models and Clever Models (http://clevermodels.squarespace.com/) offerings. While the models are simple since they are flat printed structures, it is challenging to make them three dimensional and believable. These modules at the show hit it out of the park.

This shows that some modelers have way too much spare time. At first I walked right by these set of modules but then realized that it was not an optical illusion. The modules and train were built on purpose to show that we end up chasing our own tails a great deal in this hobby. These characters at the 2026 NMRA National Train Show outdid themselves by incorporating this set of modules into the world record setting T-Trak modular layout.

Jaime, if you were using a Mac, Graphic Converter does all that you want (for $40). In particular, the "XE4782 filter" did some amazing color correction/enhancement to substantially brighten images from a commercial backdrop to generally match, or at least look consistent with, a photo backdrop from a different vendor. (https://www.jessewaugh.com/vlog/2016/11/4/epicolor-filter-plugin-for-final-cut-pro-x-jesse-waugh-art-vlog )
This is a program I've been using for more than 30 years. A couple of times I had problems, and got great response, including several times "oh, that's a problem we think we've fixed. Try this version to see if it works for you." Just a very satisfied customer over the decades I've used it.
And I bet it would run just fine on a Mac Neo... ;D

There is something about a modeled waterfront that always catches my eye. The 2026 NMRA National Train Show world record setting T-Trak modular layout did not disappoint. There were multiple examples of waterfront scenes. I've seen some layouts feature actual real live water. I saw noting like that on this modular layout. Perhaps one day...

I just bought a MacBook Neo this past weekend during the Tennessee yearly tax holiday. I now have 4 Mac laptops. 3 of them are in great working order and 1 (my first MacBook Pro from 2206 when I was working at the local Apple Store) works alright except I cannot see anything displayed on its screen as the graphics card died. Two of those are MacBook Pros, both are Intel processors. I have a 2 year old MacBook Air (my daily driver) and then the Neo (which I bought to keep at church since I am the "tech team" there). I'm typing this on the Air.
I'll see if I can make Graphic Converter work for me. I recall this is what several of the Mac users in my local Mac User Group always used. I did just a while ago give Digikam a whirl and it has a cool batch manager that allowed me to do what I need. The only caveat is I haven't figured out how to move my images from the light table to the batch manager with one click.

I walked at a pace that allowed me to take photos and keep up with the other people there walking around the layout. It was peculiar that very few if any people were walking in the opposite direction that I was traveling. Even the folks operating the layout were walking in the same direction ;D
I overheard some of the train operators say they had been waling behind their train for over two hours and were not done walking all the way around. I did not photograph every module there and at times I had to get around "traffic jams". Let's say an enterprising photographer could have spent all day photographing just this modular layout. There were lots more layouts there besides this one.

I didn't see any catenary on this layout for those that were going to mention electric motive power. Plus, how was that electricity generated? I know that diesels don't use coal. However, they do haul it ;)
I'm a fan of the operational ability of that N scale Kato unitrack...but a quick shot of brown/red primer makes a world of difference...I see some is ballasted, maybe some is just in process.

I am not sure I will make it to Minnesota this time around. I have an open invitation from the head honcho for that convention ;D It will have to be a last minute decision.

We all strive to model real life on our layouts. dioramas and stand-alone models. It helps the viewer to recognize something familiar in order to say "We have one of those back home!".

We often don't realize the scale/size of what we see every day until it is placed in some sort of entire context. You need some perspective. Not just actual visual perspective but logical, emotional and spiritual perspective to help ground us.

Waffle House gets more and more notorious every day.
Some models on the 2026 NMRA National Train Show world record setting T-Trak modular layout featured scenes the modeler wanted the viewer to notice. Some were built to pay respects to something of value to the modeler. Others were just meant to leave an impression on the viewer.
Here is a small sample of stuff that caught my attention for some reason or other. I don't photograph every module on modular layouts. I only photograph what I feel will look good, I want to remember later, and leaves an impression on me. I don't always remember why the scene made an impression on me ;D It's good enough for me to just have a remembrance....
By the way, it's been something like 2 or 3 years since I last hauled my DSLR to these shows. My neck got tired of carrying a full size dedicated camera and these phone cameras have gotten so good I don't bother carrying around all that extra weight.

Now I know what the paparazzi feel like ;D I saw Pelle at one of the booths doing an interview. I trust his convention experience was favorable as he traveled quite a ways for it.
Rural America is great. We moved "out in the country" about 8 yers ago and we love it. It's peaceful and there is very little drama. Every now and then a cow or horse gets loose from a neighbor's farm and someone has to rescue it. The last traffic jam I got stuck in out here was when I was following a school bus.

You don't necessarily have to attend a clinic at these shows to learn something. Sometimes, the modeler offers a tutorial right on the module. Word to the wise is sufficient I was told growing up.

I've been removed from the hobby for some time. I've tried to keep up when possible. I knew that 3D printing was making inroads into model trains. While at the 2026 NMRA National Train Show it became really clear that lots of modelers are opting for 3D printed models rather than kits. There was a frenzy at this one booth selling 3D printed vehicles. Some of the printed models are very affordable.

Somehow, the Z Scale layouts got left out of the main exposition hall and were relegated to a dark spot outside in the hallway of the convention center. Oftentimes the convention hall is not large enough or some glitch happens. Nevertheless, the Z Scale layouts were just as impressive as the others in the main convention hall.

I was really impressed by this Z Scale layout built on the top of a wooden toolbox. It was built by the super nice lady seated by it. There were 2 Lego Scale layouts at the 2026 NMRA National Train Show. Needless to say, there were plenty of small kids very interested in these layouts. There were also plenty of large kids just as interested ;D
Ever since I joined the hobby back in the early 1990's I've heard the hobby is dying and you people are not interested in it. Perhaps this Lego Scale is the new Lionel and American Flyer that drew in so many of the old crusty modelers in the hobby today.
Here are some photos of one of the two Lego Scale layouts along with a short YouTube video for those that have not seen Lego Scale in action.
By the way, I first saw Lego Scale at the NMRA National Train Show in Philadelphia back in 2006.

Here is the short video I made of this Lego Scale layout.
Here is the second Lego Scale layout that was set up at the 2026 NMRA National Train Show. This one was not as big but it was still as colorful as the other one. I overheard the lady in the black and red shirt (I believe she was with the layout crew) that it took them 8 hours to set up the layout in the convention hall. There is a lot of work that goes into getting these layouts ready and on display for the show goers. I don't even know if the show helps defer some of their costs. I guess they do it for the love of the hobby.

Jaime, I've been enjoying your pictures.
I can't imagine modeling in N scale let alone Z.
Amazing how much detail those Z scalers do.
It would be great if the Lego trains attract more modelers.
My grandson started with the Brio trains, then the Legos, and now he has an N scale one. Hopefully a lot of these kids do the same. Enjoying the pics, thanks for sharing them.

I bought a "lego" Shay. It actually runs, albeit much much much faster than any Shay ever ran. It's bluetooth remote controlled from the controller included with the Shay or from an app running on your mobile device. I'll have to make a photo of it. The wheels actually turn due to the steam engine turning the gears like a real Shay. I got it off Amazon for less than a run of the mill HO engine. Here is a link to it:

It is not actual Lego brand or it would cost the same as a new kit from Sierra West ;D There are actually multiple "lego" steam and diesel locomotive manufacturers. They even have a Big Boy.
Jaime, I've been to a number of National Train Shows with the HUB Division's modular layout. Bringing a layout gets exhibitors free admission to the Train Show, but that's the same terms as most other US shows. We pay to register for the convention itself.
I know at least some of the train shows in UK and Europe pay at least some of their non-commercial exhibitors, but I've never read how much.

Seeing the Sundance Central was definitely an experience! And as I recall, they did have 'deep pockets' (something to do with PODS moving and storage, if I remember correctly.) It's such a shame the museum that contained that and several other iconic model railroads ("Muskrat Ramble", which was also at Hickory), later closed.

There were two O Scale 2 rail modular layout at the 2026 NMRA National Train Show. You don't see many of these at shows. I was glad there were 2 there. I am only showing photographs of one of the layouts. It is sometimes challenging to get good photos of modular layouts at shows because of the bad lighting, crowded aisles, "velvet rope" keeping show goers at a distance from the layout, and sometimes the layout is not that interesting (Plywood Pacific). So, I only have photos for one of the O Scale 2 rail layouts. It helps a lot when modular layouts have a backdrop or are placed against a wall. It gives the viewer a "barrier" to differentiate the layout from the rest of the convention hall.

There were several HO Scale modular layouts at the 2026 NMRA National Train Show. This one from the Gulf Western group is pictured below.
I try to pick out interesting scenes. For some reason I don't find expansive rail yard scenes interesting. I am sure a lot do. I see the rail yards modeled a great deal. No doubt they are necessary. I need to give them a second chance.
