Title: New Haven catenary
Post by: jbelwood on October 05, 2014, 08:20:50 PM

Here is a beautiful sunset photo of scratch built catenary on Rick Abramson's New Haven layout.
This scene depicts Jenkins Curve in Bridgeport, CT.

Excellent work and a great picture. I am a bit partial to electrics. I grew up with relatives working on the Rocky Mountain Electrified Division of the Milwaukee Road and was fortunate enough to have ridden in the cabs of electrics over the entire division. Brings nack a lot of memories.

That photo was taken by Rick. Rick is fanatic about electrics, has HO models of every type used on the NH.
He also has a complete collection of GN electrics and a few Milw.  And yes, he runs them all.

BTW, I also model the NP but in a free lance sort of way. Tacoma, WA is my main yard.

I model both the MILW and NP in a freelance sort of way.

Sure would like to see more photos of his layout. Years back I made a big mistake by offering a friend who models the Milwaukee Road put in catenary. I had no idea that his layout was so big. I had met him at a friends layout in Cascade, MT and my friend Pete suggested he ask me to help him on the project. He has almost 10 scale miles of main line plus a couple of yards and industrial sidings. I ended up making a couple of jigs, one for each of us. About 7 months later, after we got everything we needed to get built, we got together and with the help of four other modelers got all of the catenary that we had built installed and operating over a three day weekend. Don't know it I would be up to that again.

You got that right. We worked out a plan of attack before starting and it worked out well. No problems at all. That was a surprise considering all the beer that was put away during the installation.

Rick just sent me this photo of his New Haven catenary in front of SS-71 tower and the Devon, CT station.
To have the trolley wire on the catenary show the correct patina, he painted all of it with Craft Smart Sage Green.
I mentioned that it looked to bright but he says the prototype had the same brilliance. What do I know?

Back in the winter of 2013, I had the pleasure of visiting four wonderful layouts in Connecticut, including Rick Abramson, John Elwood, Bob Collett and my host John Grosner. I met John several years ago thru Robert Seckler and ever since, when I get the desire to get out the desert and go to the Amherst train show in the dead of winter, he has been wonderful in arranging layout tours. That trip was awesome seeing four layouts in the same day. We need to all you guys on the forum and post the wonderful work that you do.

John, thank you for posting Rick's work. how about a couple of your beautiful layout. You were working on a boat building yard when I visited and I think I have seen photos of the final model, but would enjoy seeing more. Keep up the beautiful work.

Frank, thank you so much for those wonderful comments. My layout was completed (can I use that nasty word?)
a few years ago and I've slowly advanced to model boat building. Go to the dioramas thread and check out my
latest project under CR Lamb proceeds. Not to fear, I'm still an avid model railroader.

Here's a favorite scene on my O&PS. Boat is scratch build on a SWSM hull.

If I were to start a thread on my layout, what category would it be under?

One more question: Heretofore all of my pics are thumbnails. How do I post them in larger format and
also put wording in between?

Gregory,

Jaime Zepeda posted  many photos of my layout on MRRForum shortly after
his visit here after CSS2010. I guess I can post that link here. In time, I should
be able to update with more specific photos.
